⁸ Ἀλλὰ (But) καὶ (even) ἐὰν (if) ἡμεῖς (we) ἢ (or) ἄγγελος (an angel) ἐξ (out of) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) εὐαγγελίζηται* (should preach a gospel) ὑμῖν (to you) παρ’ (contrary to) ὃ (what) εὐηγγελισάμεθα (we proclaimed) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀνάθεμα (accursed) ἔστω (let him be)! ⁹ ὡς (As) προειρήκαμεν (we have said before), καὶ (even) ἄρτι (now) πάλιν (again) λέγω (I say), εἴ (if) τις (anyone) ὑμᾶς (to you) εὐαγγελίζεται (is preaching a gospel) παρ’ (contrary to) ὃ (what) παρελάβετε (you received), ἀνάθεμα (accursed) ἔστω (let him be)!

¹² Ζῶν (Living is) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) ἐνεργὴς (active), καὶ (and) τομώτερος (sharper) ὑπὲρ (than) πᾶσαν (any) μάχαιραν (sword) δίστομον (two-edged), καὶ (even) διϊκνούμενος (penetrating) ἄχρι (as far as) μερισμοῦ (the division) ψυχῆς (of soul) καὶ (and) πνεύματος (spirit), ἁρμῶν (of joints) τε (and) καὶ (also) μυελῶν (marrows), καὶ (and) κριτικὸς (able to judge) ἐνθυμήσεων (the thoughts) καὶ (and) ἐννοιῶν (intentions) καρδίας (of the heart).

²⁴ Ἐπειδὴ (Inasmuch as) ἠκούσαμεν (we have heard) ὅτι (that) τινὲς (some) ἐξ (from) ἡμῶν (us) ‹ἐξελθόντες› (went out) ἐτάραξαν (troubled) ὑμᾶς (you) λόγοις (by words), ἀνασκευάζοντες (upsetting) τὰς (the) ψυχὰς (minds) ὑμῶν (of you), οἷς (to whom) οὐ (not) διεστειλάμεθα (we had given instructions),

⁷ ὃ (which) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἄλλο (another); εἰ (if) μή (not) τινές (some) εἰσιν (there are) οἱ (who) ταράσσοντες (are troubling) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) θέλοντες (are desiring) μεταστρέψαι (to pervert) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ).

³ Ἀγαπητοί (Beloved), πᾶσαν (all) σπουδὴν (diligence) ποιούμενος (using) γράφειν (to write) ὑμῖν (to you) περὶ (concerning) τῆς (-) κοινῆς (common) ἡμῶν (of us) σωτηρίας (salvation), ἀνάγκην (necessity) ἔσχον (I had) γράψαι (to write) ὑμῖν (to you), παρακαλῶν (exhorting you) ἐπαγωνίζεσθαι (to contend earnestly) τῇ (for the) ἅπαξ (once for all) παραδοθείσῃ (having been delivered) τοῖς (to the) ἁγίοις (saints) πίστει (faith). ⁴ παρεισέδυσαν* (Came in stealthily) γάρ (for) τινες (certain) ἄνθρωποι (men), οἱ (those) πάλαι (long ago) προγεγραμμένοι (having been designated) εἰς (unto) τοῦτο (this) τὸ (-) κρίμα (condemnation), ἀσεβεῖς (ungodly ones), τὴν (the) τοῦ (of the) Θεοῦ (God) ἡμῶν (of us) χάριτα (grace) μετατιθέντες (changing) εἰς (into) ἀσέλγειαν (sensuality), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) μόνον (only) Δεσπότην (master) καὶ (and) Κύριον (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἀρνούμενοι (denying). ⁵ Ὑπομνῆσαι (To remind) δὲ (now) ὑμᾶς (you) βούλομαι (I want), εἰδότας (having known) ‹ὑμᾶς› (you) ἅπαξ (at one time) «πάντα (all this), ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς» (Jesus) λαὸν (a people) ἐκ (out of) γῆς (the land) Αἰγύπτου (of Egypt) σώσας (having saved), τὸ (-) δεύτερον (afterward) τοὺς (those) μὴ (not) πιστεύσαντας (having believed), ἀπώλεσεν (He destroyed). ⁶ ἀγγέλους (The angels) τε (both) τοὺς (-) μὴ (not) τηρήσαντας (having kept) τὴν (own) ἑαυτῶν (their) ἀρχὴν (domain), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀπολιπόντας (having left) τὸ (the) ἴδιον (own) οἰκητήριον (dwelling), εἰς (unto) κρίσιν (the judgment) μεγάλης (of the great) ἡμέρας (day), δεσμοῖς (in chains) ἀϊδίοις (eternal) ὑπὸ (under) ζόφον (darkness) τετήρηκεν (He keeps), ⁷ ὡς (just as) Σόδομα (Sodom) καὶ (and) Γόμορρα (Gomorrah) καὶ (and) αἱ (the) περὶ (around) αὐτὰς (them) πόλεις (cities), τὸν (-) ὅμοιον (in like) τρόπον (manner) τούτοις (with them) ἐκπορνεύσασαι (having indulged in sexual immorality) καὶ (and) ἀπελθοῦσαι (having gone) ὀπίσω (after) σαρκὸς (flesh) ἑτέρας (strange), πρόκεινται (are set forth as) δεῖγμα (an example) πυρὸς (of fire) αἰωνίου (eternal) δίκην (the penalty) ὑπέχουσαι (undergoing). ⁸ Ὁμοίως (Likewise) μέντοι (yet) καὶ (also) οὗτοι (these) ἐνυπνιαζόμενοι (dreaming ones), σάρκα (the flesh) μὲν (indeed) μιαίνουσιν (defile), κυριότητα (authority) δὲ (then) ἀθετοῦσιν (set aside), δόξας (glorious ones) δὲ (and) βλασφημοῦσιν (blaspheme). ⁹ ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Μιχαὴλ (Michael) ὁ (the) ἀρχάγγελος (archangel), ὅτε (when) τῷ (with the) διαβόλῳ (devil) διακρινόμενος (disputing), διελέγετο (he was reasoning) περὶ (about) τοῦ (-) Μωϋσέως (Moses’) σώματος (body), οὐκ (not) ἐτόλμησεν (did dare) κρίσιν (a judgment) ἐπενεγκεῖν (to bring against him) βλασφημίας (blasphemous), ἀλλὰ (but) εἶπεν (said), “Ἐπιτιμήσαι (Rebuke) σοι (you), Κύριος (the Lord).” ¹⁰ οὗτοι (These) δὲ (however), ὅσα (whatever things) μὲν (indeed) οὐκ (not) οἴδασιν (they have seen) βλασφημοῦσιν (they speak evil of); ὅσα (whatever things) δὲ (then) φυσικῶς (naturally), ὡς (as) τὰ (the) ἄλογα (irrational) ζῷα (animals), ἐπίστανται (they understand), ἐν (in) τούτοις (these things) φθείρονται (they corrupt themselves). ¹¹ οὐαὶ (Woe) αὐτοῖς (to them), ὅτι (because) τῇ (in the) ὁδῷ (way) τοῦ (-) Κάϊν (of Cain) ἐπορεύθησαν (they went), καὶ (and) τῇ (to the) πλάνῃ (error) τοῦ (-) Βαλαὰμ (of Balaam) μισθοῦ (for reward) ἐξεχύθησαν (they rushed), καὶ (and) τῇ (in the) ἀντιλογίᾳ (rebellion) τοῦ (-) Κόρε (of Korah) ἀπώλοντο (they perished). ¹² Οὗτοί (These) εἰσιν (are) οἱ (the ones) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀγάπαις (love feasts) ὑμῶν (of you), σπιλάδες (hidden reefs), συνευωχούμενοι (feasting together with you) ἀφόβως (fearlessly), ἑαυτοὺς (themselves) ποιμαίνοντες (shepherding); νεφέλαι (clouds) ἄνυδροι (without water), ὑπὸ (by) ἀνέμων (winds) παραφερόμεναι (being carried about); δένδρα (trees) φθινοπωρινὰ (autumnal) ἄκαρπα (without fruit), δὶς (twice) ἀποθανόντα (having died), ἐκριζωθέντα (having been uprooted); ¹³ κύματα (waves) ἄγρια (wild) θαλάσσης (of the sea), ἐπαφρίζοντα (foaming out) τὰς (-) ἑαυτῶν (of their) αἰσχύνας (shame); ἀστέρες (stars) πλανῆται (wandering), οἷς (to whom) ὁ (the) ζόφος (gloom) τοῦ (-) σκότους (of darkness) εἰς (to) αἰῶνα (the age) τετήρηται (has been reserved). ¹⁴ Προεφήτευσεν* (Prophesied) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) τούτοις (as to these) ἕβδομος (the seventh) ἀπὸ (from) Ἀδὰμ (Adam), Ἑνὼχ (Enoch), λέγων (saying): “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἦλθεν (has come) Κύριος (the Lord) ἐν (amidst) ἁγίαις (holy ones) μυριάσιν (myriads) αὐτοῦ (of His), ¹⁵ ποιῆσαι (to execute) κρίσιν (judgment) κατὰ (against) πάντων (all), καὶ (and) ἐλέγξαι (to convict) πάντας (all) τοὺς (the) ἀσεβεῖς (ungodly) περὶ (concerning) πάντων (all) τῶν (the) ἔργων (works) ἀσεβείας (of ungodliness) αὐτῶν (of them) ὧν (which) ἠσέβησαν (they have done in an ungodly way), καὶ (and) περὶ (concerning) πάντων (all) τῶν (the) σκληρῶν (harsh things) ὧν (that) ἐλάλησαν (have spoken) κατ’ (against) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἁμαρτωλοὶ (sinners) ἀσεβεῖς (ungodly).” ¹⁶ Οὗτοί (These) εἰσιν (are) γογγυσταί (grumblers), μεμψίμοιροι (discontented), κατὰ (after) τὰς (the) ἐπιθυμίας (lusts) αὐτῶν (own) πορευόμενοι (following); καὶ (and) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) αὐτῶν (of them) λαλεῖ (speaks) ὑπέρογκα (great swelling words), θαυμάζοντες (flattering) πρόσωπα (faces) ὠφελείας (profit) χάριν (for the sake of).

¹⁵ Καταλιπόντες (Having left) εὐθεῖαν (the straight) ὁδὸν (way), ἐπλανήθησαν (they have gone astray), ἐξακολουθήσαντες (having followed) τῇ (in the) ὁδῷ (way) τοῦ (-) Βαλαὰμ (of Balaam) τοῦ (-) Βοσὸρ* (son of Bosor), ὃς (who) μισθὸν (the wage) ἀδικίας (of unrighteousness) ἠγάπησεν (loved);

¹⁹ Φανερὰ (Evident) δέ (now) ἐστιν (are) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τῆς (of the) σαρκός (flesh), ἅτινά (which) ἐστιν (are) πορνεία (sexual immorality), ἀκαθαρσία (impurity), ἀσέλγεια (sensuality), ²⁰ εἰδωλολατρία (idolatry), φαρμακεία (sorcery), ἔχθραι (enmities), ἔρις (strife), ζῆλος (jealousy), θυμοί (outbursts of anger), ἐριθεῖαι (contentions), διχοστασίαι (dissensions), αἱρέσεις (factions), ²¹ φθόνοι (envyings), μέθαι (drunkennesses), κῶμοι (carousing), καὶ (and) τὰ (things) ὅμοια (like) τούτοις (these), ἃ (as to which) προλέγω (I forewarn) ὑμῖν (you), καθὼς (even as) προεῖπον (I warned before), ὅτι (that) οἱ (those) τὰ (such) τοιαῦτα (things) πράσσοντες (doing), βασιλείαν (kingdom) Θεοῦ (God’s) οὐ (not) κληρονομήσουσιν (will inherit).

¹¹ ὁ (the one) λέγων (telling) γὰρ (for) αὐτῷ (him) χαίρειν (to rejoice) κοινωνεῖ (partakes) τοῖς (in the) ἔργοις (works) αὐτοῦ (of him) τοῖς (-) πονηροῖς (evil).

⁴ εἰ (If) μὲν (indeed) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the one) ἐρχόμενος (coming), ἄλλον (another) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) κηρύσσει (proclaims), ὃν (whom) οὐκ (not) ἐκηρύξαμεν (we did proclaim), ἢ (or) πνεῦμα (a spirit) ἕτερον (different) λαμβάνετε (you receive) ὃ (which) οὐκ (not) ἐλάβετε (you did receive), ἢ (or) εὐαγγέλιον (glad tidings) ἕτερον (different) ὃ (which) οὐκ (not) ἐδέξασθε (you did accept), καλῶς (well) ἀνέχεσθε (are you bearing with it).

¹⁰ Εἴ (If) τις (anyone) ἔρχεται (comes) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) καὶ (and) ταύτην (this) τὴν (-) διδαχὴν (teaching) οὐ (not) φέρει (does bring), μὴ (not) λαμβάνετε (receive) αὐτὸν (him) εἰς (into) οἰκίαν (the house), καὶ (and) χαίρειν (to rejoice) αὐτῷ (him) μὴ (not) λέγετε (tell);

¹⁰ αἱρετικὸν (A factious) ἄνθρωπον (man), μετὰ (after) μίαν (one) καὶ (and) δευτέραν (a second) νουθεσίαν (admonition), παραιτοῦ (reject),

¹ Ἐγένοντο (There were) δὲ (however) καὶ (also) ψευδοπροφῆται (false prophets) ἐν (among) τῷ (the) λαῷ (people), ὡς (as) καὶ (also) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) ἔσονται (there will be) ψευδοδιδάσκαλοι (false teachers), οἵτινες (who) παρεισάξουσιν (will stealthily introduce) αἱρέσεις (heresies) ἀπωλείας (destructive), καὶ (even) τὸν (the) ἀγοράσαντα (having bought) αὐτοὺς (them) δεσπότην (Master) ἀρνούμενοι (denying), ἐπάγοντες (bringing upon) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves) ταχινὴν (swift) ἀπώλειαν (destruction).

¹ Ἀγαπητοί (Beloved), μὴ (not) παντὶ (every) πνεύματι (spirit) πιστεύετε (believe), ἀλλὰ (but) δοκιμάζετε (test) τὰ (the) πνεύματα (spirits), εἰ (whether) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) ἐστιν (they are), ὅτι (because) πολλοὶ (many) ψευδοπροφῆται (false prophets) ἐξεληλύθασιν (have gone out) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world).

¹ Ἐγένοντο (There were) δὲ (however) καὶ (also) ψευδοπροφῆται (false prophets) ἐν (among) τῷ (the) λαῷ (people), ὡς (as) καὶ (also) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) ἔσονται (there will be) ψευδοδιδάσκαλοι (false teachers), οἵτινες (who) παρεισάξουσιν (will stealthily introduce) αἱρέσεις (heresies) ἀπωλείας (destructive), καὶ (even) τὸν (the) ἀγοράσαντα (having bought) αὐτοὺς (them) δεσπότην (Master) ἀρνούμενοι (denying), ἐπάγοντες (bringing upon) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves) ταχινὴν (swift) ἀπώλειαν (destruction). ² καὶ (And) πολλοὶ (many) ἐξακολουθήσουσιν (will follow after) αὐτῶν (their) ταῖς (-) ἀσελγείαις (sensuality), δι’ (through) οὓς (whom) ἡ (the) ὁδὸς (way) τῆς (of the) ἀληθείας (truth) βλασφημηθήσεται (will be maligned). ³ καὶ (And) ἐν (through) πλεονεξίᾳ (covetousness) πλαστοῖς (with fabricated) λόγοις (words) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐμπορεύσονται (they will exploit), οἷς (for whom) τὸ (the) κρίμα (judgment) ἔκπαλαι (of long ago) οὐκ (not) ἀργεῖ (is idle), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀπώλεια (destruction) αὐτῶν (of them) οὐ (not) νυστάζει (slumbers). ⁴ Εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἀγγέλων (the angels) ἁμαρτησάντων (having sinned), οὐκ (not) ἐφείσατο (spared), ἀλλὰ (but) σειραῖς* (in chains) ζόφου (of gloomy darkness) ταρταρώσας (having cast them down to Tartarus), παρέδωκεν (delivered them), εἰς (for) κρίσιν (judgment) τηρουμένους (being kept); ⁵ καὶ (and) ἀρχαίου (the ancient) κόσμου (world) οὐκ (not) ἐφείσατο (He spared), ἀλλὰ (but) ὄγδοον (one of eight), Νῶε (Noah) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness) κήρυκα (a herald) ἐφύλαξεν (preserved), κατακλυσμὸν (the flood upon) κόσμῳ (the world) ἀσεβῶν (of the ungodly) ἐπάξας (having brought in); ⁶ καὶ (and) πόλεις (the cities) Σοδόμων (of Sodom) καὶ (and) Γομόρρας (Gomorrah) τεφρώσας (having reduced to ashes), καταστροφῇ (to destruction) κατέκρινεν (He condemned them), ὑπόδειγμα (an example) μελλόντων (of what is coming on) ‹ἀσεβέσιν› (the ungodly) τεθεικώς (having set); ⁷ καὶ (and) δίκαιον (righteous) Λὼτ (Lot), καταπονούμενον (being distressed) ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (the) τῶν (of the) ἀθέσμων (lawless) ἐν (in) ἀσελγείᾳ (sensuality) ἀναστροφῆς (conduct), ἐρρύσατο (He rescued) — ⁸ βλέμματι (through seeing) γὰρ (for) καὶ (and) ἀκοῇ (hearing) ὁ (that) δίκαιος (righteous man), ἐνκατοικῶν (dwelling) ἐν (among) αὐτοῖς (them) ἡμέραν (day) ἐξ (after) ἡμέρας (day), ψυχὴν (in his soul) δικαίαν (righteous) ἀνόμοις (with their lawless) ἔργοις (deeds) ἐβασάνιζεν (was tormented) — ⁹ οἶδεν (then knows) Κύριος (the Lord) εὐσεβεῖς (the devout) ἐκ (out of) πειρασμοῦ (temptation) ῥύεσθαι (to deliver); ἀδίκους (the unrighteous) δὲ (then) εἰς (unto) ἡμέραν (the day) κρίσεως (of judgment) κολαζομένους (being punished) τηρεῖν (to keep); ¹⁰ μάλιστα (especially) δὲ (then) τοὺς (those) ὀπίσω (after) σαρκὸς (the flesh) ἐν (in) ἐπιθυμίᾳ (the passion) μιασμοῦ (of defilement) πορευομένους (walking) καὶ (and) κυριότητος (authority) καταφρονοῦντας (despising). τολμηταὶ (Bold), αὐθάδεις (self-willed), δόξας (glorious ones) οὐ (not) τρέμουσιν (they tremble) βλασφημοῦντες (blaspheming), ¹¹ ὅπου (whereas) ἄγγελοι (angels), ἰσχύϊ (in strength) καὶ (and) δυνάμει (power) μείζονες (greater) ὄντες (being), οὐ (not) φέρουσιν (do bring) κατ’ (against) αὐτῶν (them) παρὰ (before) Κυρίῳ (the Lord) βλάσφημον (a reviling) κρίσιν (judgment). ¹² Οὗτοι (These) δέ (however), ὡς (like) ἄλογα (irrational) ζῷα (animals), γεγεννημένα (having been born) φυσικὰ (as creatures of instinct) εἰς (for) ἅλωσιν (capture) καὶ (and) φθοράν (destruction), ἐν (in) οἷς (what) ἀγνοοῦσιν (they are ignorant of), βλασφημοῦντες (blaspheming), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) φθορᾷ (destruction) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (also) φθαρήσονται (will be destroyed), ¹³ ἀδικούμενοι (suffering wrong) μισθὸν (as the wage) ἀδικίας (of unrighteousness); ἡδονὴν (as pleasure) ἡγούμενοι (esteeming) τὴν (-) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (daytime) τρυφήν (carousal); σπίλοι (blots) καὶ (and) μῶμοι (blemishes), ἐντρυφῶντες (reveling) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀπάταις (deceptions) αὐτῶν (of them), συνευωχούμενοι (feasting with) ὑμῖν (you); ¹⁴ ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) ἔχοντες (having) μεστοὺς (full) μοιχαλίδος (of adultery), καὶ (and) ἀκαταπαύστους (unceasing) ἁμαρτίας (from sin), δελεάζοντες (enticing) ψυχὰς (souls) ἀστηρίκτους (unestablished); καρδίαν (a heart) γεγυμνασμένην (having been exercised) πλεονεξίας (in craving) ἔχοντες (having)— κατάρας (of a curse) τέκνα (children)! ¹⁵ Καταλιπόντες (Having left) εὐθεῖαν (the straight) ὁδὸν (way), ἐπλανήθησαν (they have gone astray), ἐξακολουθήσαντες (having followed) τῇ (in the) ὁδῷ (way) τοῦ (-) Βαλαὰμ (of Balaam) τοῦ (-) Βοσὸρ* (son of Bosor), ὃς (who) μισθὸν (the wage) ἀδικίας (of unrighteousness) ἠγάπησεν (loved); ¹⁶ ἔλεγξιν (reproof) δὲ (however) ἔσχεν (he had) ἰδίας (for his own) παρανομίας (transgression) ὑποζύγιον (by a donkey) ἄφωνον (mute); ἐν (in) ἀνθρώπου (a man’s) φωνῇ (voice) φθεγξάμενον (having spoken), ἐκώλυσεν (it restrained) τὴν (the) τοῦ (of the) προφήτου (prophet) παραφρονίαν (madness). ¹⁷ Οὗτοί (These) εἰσιν (are) πηγαὶ (springs) ἄνυδροι (without water) καὶ (and) ὁμίχλαι (mists) ὑπὸ (by) λαίλαπος (storm) ἐλαυνόμεναι (being driven), οἷς (for whom) ὁ (-) ζόφος (gloom) τοῦ (-) σκότους (of darkness) τετήρηται (has been reserved). ¹⁸ ὑπέρογκα (Arrogant) γὰρ (for) ματαιότητος (of vanity) φθεγγόμενοι (speaking words), δελεάζουσιν (they entice) ἐν (with) ἐπιθυμίαις (the passions) σαρκὸς (of the flesh) ἀσελγείαις (to sensuality) τοὺς (those) ὀλίγως (barely) ἀποφεύγοντας (escaping) τοὺς (from those) ἐν (in) πλάνῃ (error) ἀναστρεφομένους (living), ¹⁹ ἐλευθερίαν (freedom) αὐτοῖς (them) ἐπαγγελλόμενοι (promising), αὐτοὶ (themselves) δοῦλοι (slaves) ὑπάρχοντες (being) τῆς (-) φθορᾶς (of corruption). ᾧ (By what) γάρ (for) τις (anyone) ἥττηται (has been subdued), τούτῳ (by that) ‹καὶ› (also) δεδούλωται (he is enslaved). ²⁰ Εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ἀποφυγόντες (having escaped) τὰ (the) μιάσματα (pollutions) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) ἐν (through) ἐπιγνώσει (the knowledge) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) καὶ (and) Σωτῆρος (Savior) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), τούτοις (in these) δὲ (now) πάλιν (again) ἐμπλακέντες (having been entangled) ἡττῶνται (they are subdued), γέγονεν (has become) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὰ (the) ἔσχατα (last state) χείρονα (worse) τῶν (than the) πρώτων (first). ²¹ κρεῖττον (Better) γὰρ (for) ἦν (it would have been) αὐτοῖς (for them) μὴ (not) ἐπεγνωκέναι (to have known) τὴν (the) ὁδὸν (way) τῆς (-) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness), ἢ (than) ἐπιγνοῦσιν (having known it), ὑποστρέψαι (to have turned) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) παραδοθείσης (having been delivered) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἁγίας (holy) ἐντολῆς (commandment). ²² συμβέβηκεν (Has happened) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὸ (the thing) τῆς (of the) ἀληθοῦς (true) παροιμίας (proverb): “Κύων (A dog) ἐπιστρέψας (having returned) ἐπὶ (to) τὸ (its) ἴδιον (own) ἐξέραμα (vomit),” καί (and), “Ὗς (A sow) λουσαμένη (having washed), εἰς (to her) κυλισμὸν (rolling place) βορβόρου (in the mire).”
