⁴³ Ἠκούσατε (You have heard) ὅτι (that) ἐρρέθη (it was said), ‘Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) τὸν (-) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) καὶ (and) μισήσεις (shall hate) τὸν (-) ἐχθρόν (enemy) σου (of you).’ ⁴⁴ ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀγαπᾶτε (love) τοὺς (the) ἐχθροὺς (enemies) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) προσεύχεσθε (pray) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (those) διωκόντων (persecuting) ὑμᾶς (you), ⁴⁵ ὅπως (so that) γένησθε (you may be) υἱοὶ (sons) τοῦ (of the) Πατρὸς (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) τοῦ (who is) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens). ὅτι (For) τὸν (the) ἥλιον (sun) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἀνατέλλει (He makes rise) ἐπὶ (on) πονηροὺς (evil) καὶ (and) ἀγαθοὺς (good), καὶ (and) βρέχει (He sends rain) ἐπὶ (on) δικαίους (righteous) καὶ (and) ἀδίκους (unrighteous).

¹⁹ Φανερὰ (Evident) δέ (now) ἐστιν (are) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τῆς (of the) σαρκός (flesh), ἅτινά (which) ἐστιν (are) πορνεία (sexual immorality), ἀκαθαρσία (impurity), ἀσέλγεια (sensuality), ²⁰ εἰδωλολατρία (idolatry), φαρμακεία (sorcery), ἔχθραι (enmities), ἔρις (strife), ζῆλος (jealousy), θυμοί (outbursts of anger), ἐριθεῖαι (contentions), διχοστασίαι (dissensions), αἱρέσεις (factions), ²¹ φθόνοι (envyings), μέθαι (drunkennesses), κῶμοι (carousing), καὶ (and) τὰ (things) ὅμοια (like) τούτοις (these), ἃ (as to which) προλέγω (I forewarn) ὑμῖν (you), καθὼς (even as) προεῖπον (I warned before), ὅτι (that) οἱ (those) τὰ (such) τοιαῦτα (things) πράσσοντες (doing), βασιλείαν (kingdom) Θεοῦ (God’s) οὐ (not) κληρονομήσουσιν (will inherit).

¹ Πόθεν (From where) πόλεμοι (come disputes) καὶ (and) πόθεν (from where) μάχαι (quarrels) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you)? οὐκ (Is it not) ἐντεῦθεν (from there), ἐκ (out of) τῶν (the) ἡδονῶν (passions) ὑμῶν (of you) τῶν (-) στρατευομένων (warring) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσιν (members) ὑμῶν (of you)? ² ἐπιθυμεῖτε (You desire), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔχετε (have); φονεύετε (you kill) καὶ (and) ζηλοῦτε (covet), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) δύνασθε (are able) ἐπιτυχεῖν (to obtain); μάχεσθε (You quarrel) καὶ (and) πολεμεῖτε (wrangle). οὐκ (Not) ἔχετε (you have), διὰ (because) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) αἰτεῖσθαι (ask) ὑμᾶς (you). ³ αἰτεῖτε (You ask) καὶ (and) οὐ (not) λαμβάνετε (receive), διότι (because) κακῶς (wrongly) αἰτεῖσθε (you ask), ἵνα (that) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡδοναῖς (pleasures) ὑμῶν (of you), δαπανήσητε (you may spend it). ⁴ Μοιχαλίδες (Adulteresses)! οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) ἡ (the) φιλία (friendship) τοῦ (with the) κόσμου (world), ἔχθρα (hostility) τοῦ (with) Θεοῦ (God) ἐστιν (is)? ὃς (Whoever) ἐὰν (if) οὖν (therefore) βουληθῇ (has chosen) φίλος (a friend) εἶναι (to be) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world), ἐχθρὸς (an enemy) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καθίσταται (is appointed). ⁵ ἢ (Or) δοκεῖτε (think you) ὅτι (that) κενῶς (in vain) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture) λέγει (says), “Πρὸς (With) φθόνον (envy) ἐπιποθεῖ (yearns) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (Spirit) ὃ (that) κατῴκισεν (He has made to dwell) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us)?” ⁶ μείζονα (Greater) δὲ (however) δίδωσιν (He gives) χάριν (grace). διὸ (Therefore) λέγει (it says): “Ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ὑπερηφάνοις (the proud) ἀντιτάσσεται (opposes), ταπεινοῖς (to the humble) δὲ (however) δίδωσιν (gives) χάριν (grace).” ⁷ Ὑποτάγητε (Subject yourselves) οὖν (therefore) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God). ἀντίστητε (Resist) δὲ (however) τῷ (the) διαβόλῳ (devil), καὶ (and) φεύξεται (he will flee) ἀφ’ (from) ὑμῶν (you). ⁸ ἐγγίσατε (Draw near) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), καὶ (and) ἐγγιεῖ* (He will draw near) ὑμῖν (to you). καθαρίσατε (Cleanse) χεῖρας (your hands), ἁμαρτωλοί (you sinners), καὶ (and) ἁγνίσατε (have purified) καρδίας (hearts), δίψυχοι (you double-minded). ⁹ ταλαιπωρήσατε (Be grieved), καὶ (and) πενθήσατε (mourn), καὶ (and) κλαύσατε (weep). ὁ (The) γέλως (laughter) ὑμῶν (of you), εἰς (to) πένθος (mourning) μετατραπήτω (let be turned), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) χαρὰ (joy) εἰς (to) κατήφειαν (gloom). ¹⁰ ταπεινώθητε (Humble yourselves) ἐνώπιον (in the presence of) Κυρίου (the Lord), καὶ (and) ὑψώσει (He will exalt) ὑμᾶς (you). ¹¹ Μὴ (Not) καταλαλεῖτε (speak against) ἀλλήλων (one another), ἀδελφοί (brothers). ὁ (The one) καταλαλῶν (speaking against) ἀδελφοῦ (his brother) ἢ (or) κρίνων (judging) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), καταλαλεῖ (speaks against) νόμου (the Law) καὶ (and) κρίνει (judges) νόμον (the Law). εἰ (If) δὲ (however) νόμον (the Law) κρίνεις (you judge), οὐκ (not) εἶ (you are) ποιητὴς (a doer) νόμου (of the Law), ἀλλὰ (but) κριτής (a judge). ¹² εἷς (One) ἐστιν (there is) [ὁ] (-) νομοθέτης (Lawgiver) καὶ (and) κριτής (Judge), ὁ (the One) δυνάμενος (being able) σῶσαι (to save) καὶ (and) ἀπολέσαι (to destroy). σὺ (You) δὲ (however), τίς (who) εἶ (are) ὁ (-) κρίνων (judging) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor)? ¹³ Ἄγε (Come) νῦν (now), οἱ (those) λέγοντες (saying), “Σήμερον (Today) ἢ (or) αὔριον (tomorrow) πορευσόμεθα (we will go) εἰς (into) τήνδε (such) τὴν (-) πόλιν (city), καὶ (and) ποιήσομεν (will spend) ἐκεῖ (there) ἐνιαυτὸν (a year), καὶ (and) ἐμπορευσόμεθα (will trade), καὶ (and) κερδήσομεν (will make a profit),” ¹⁴ οἵτινες (who) οὐκ (not) ἐπίστασθε (know) ‹τὸ› (what is) τῆς (on the) αὔριον (next day is). ποία (What is) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ὑμῶν (of you)? ἀτμὶς (A vapor) γάρ (just) ἐστε (it is), ἡ (-) πρὸς (for) ὀλίγον (a little while) φαινομένη (appearing), ἔπειτα (then) καὶ (also) ἀφανιζομένη (vanishing). ¹⁵ Ἀντὶ (Instead ought) τοῦ (-) λέγειν (to say) ὑμᾶς (you), “Ἐὰν (If) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) θελήσῃ (should will), καὶ (both) ζήσομεν (we will live) καὶ (and) ποιήσομεν (we will do) τοῦτο (this) ἢ (or) ἐκεῖνο (that).” ¹⁶ νῦν (Now) δὲ (however) καυχᾶσθε (you boast) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀλαζονείαις* (arrogance) ὑμῶν (of you). πᾶσα (All) καύχησις (boasting) τοιαύτη (such) πονηρά (evil) ἐστιν (is). ¹⁷ εἰδότι (To him knowing) οὖν (therefore) καλὸν (good) ποιεῖν (to do), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ποιοῦντι (doing), ἁμαρτία (sin) αὐτῷ (to him) ἐστιν (it is).

²⁷ Ἀλλὰ (But) ὑμῖν (to you) λέγω (I say), τοῖς (to those) ἀκούουσιν (hearing): Ἀγαπᾶτε (Love) τοὺς (the) ἐχθροὺς (enemies) ὑμῶν (of you), καλῶς (good) ποιεῖτε (do) τοῖς (to those) μισοῦσιν (hating) ὑμᾶς (you), ²⁸ εὐλογεῖτε (bless) τοὺς (those) καταρωμένους (cursing) ὑμᾶς (you), προσεύχεσθε (pray) περὶ (for) τῶν (those) ἐπηρεαζόντων (mistreating) ὑμᾶς (you). ²⁹ τῷ (To the one) τύπτοντί (striking) σε (you) ἐπὶ (on) τὴν (the) σιαγόνα (cheek), πάρεχε (offer) καὶ (also) τὴν (the) ἄλλην (other); καὶ (and) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the one) αἴροντός (taking away) σου (your) τὸ (-) ἱμάτιον (cloak), καὶ (also) τὸν (the) χιτῶνα (tunic) μὴ (not) κωλύσῃς (do withhold). ³⁰ παντὶ (To everyone) αἰτοῦντί (asking) σε (you), δίδου (give), καὶ (and) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the one) αἴροντος (taking away) τὰ (what is) σὰ (yours), μὴ (not) ἀπαίτει (ask it back). ³¹ καὶ (And) καθὼς (as) θέλετε (you desire) ἵνα (that) ποιῶσιν (should do) ὑμῖν (to you) οἱ (-) ἄνθρωποι (men), ποιεῖτε (do) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁμοίως (likewise). ³² Καὶ (And) εἰ (if) ἀγαπᾶτε (you love) τοὺς (those) ἀγαπῶντας (loving) ὑμᾶς (you), ποία (what) ὑμῖν (to you) χάρις (credit) ἐστίν (is it)? καὶ (Even) γὰρ (for) οἱ (-) ἁμαρτωλοὶ (sinners) τοὺς (those) ἀγαπῶντας (loving) αὐτοὺς (them), ἀγαπῶσιν (love). ³³ καὶ (And) γὰρ (for) ἐὰν (if) ἀγαθοποιῆτε (you do good) τοὺς (to those) ἀγαθοποιοῦντας (doing good to) ὑμᾶς (you), ποία (what) ὑμῖν (to you) χάρις (credit) ἐστίν (is it)? καὶ (For even) οἱ (-) ἁμαρτωλοὶ (sinners) τὸ (the) αὐτὸ (same) ποιοῦσιν (do). ³⁴ καὶ (And) ἐὰν (if) δανίσητε (you lend to those) παρ’ (from) ὧν (whom) ἐλπίζετε (you expect) λαβεῖν (to receive back), ποία (what) ὑμῖν (to you) χάρις (credit) ἐστίν (is it)? καὶ (Even) ἁμαρτωλοὶ (sinners) ἁμαρτωλοῖς (to sinners) δανίζουσιν (lend), ἵνα (that) ἀπολάβωσιν (they might receive) τὰ (the) ἴσα (same amount). ³⁵ Πλὴν (But) ἀγαπᾶτε (love) τοὺς (the) ἐχθροὺς (enemies) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) ἀγαθοποιεῖτε (do good), καὶ (and) δανίζετε (lend), μηδὲν (nothing) ἀπελπίζοντες (expecting in return), καὶ (and) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) μισθὸς (reward) ὑμῶν (of you) πολύς (great), καὶ (and) ἔσεσθε (you will be) υἱοὶ (sons of) Ὑψίστου (the Most High); ὅτι (for) αὐτὸς (He) χρηστός (kind) ἐστιν (is) ἐπὶ (to) τοὺς (the) ἀχαρίστους (ungrateful) καὶ (and) πονηρούς (evil). ³⁶ Γίνεσθε (Be you) οἰκτίρμονες (merciful), καθὼς (as) [καὶ] (also) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) οἰκτίρμων (merciful) ἐστίν (is).

¹⁸ Εἰ (If) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) ὑμᾶς (you) μισεῖ (hates), γινώσκετε (you know) ὅτι (that) ἐμὲ (Me) πρῶτον (before) ὑμῶν (you) μεμίσηκεν (it has hated).

¹¹ ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) μισῶν (hating) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) ἐστὶν (is), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) περιπατεῖ (walks); καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) οἶδεν (does he know) ποῦ (where) ὑπάγει (he is going), ὅτι (because) ἡ (the) σκοτία (darkness) ἐτύφλωσεν (has blinded) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτοῦ (of him).

⁴⁴ ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀγαπᾶτε (love) τοὺς (the) ἐχθροὺς (enemies) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) προσεύχεσθε (pray) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (those) διωκόντων (persecuting) ὑμᾶς (you),

¹⁵ ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) ἀφῆτε (you forgive) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (men) (τὰ (the) παραπτώματα (the trespasses) αὐτῶν) (of them), οὐδὲ (neither) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) ἀφήσει (will forgive) τὰ (the) παραπτώματα (trespasses) ὑμῶν (of you).

⁹ Ὁ (The one) λέγων (claiming) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) φωτὶ (light) εἶναι (to be) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) μισῶν (hating), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) ἐστὶν (is) ἕως (even until) ἄρτι (now).

²⁰ Ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) εἴπῃ (should say) ὅτι (-), “Ἀγαπῶ (I love) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God),” καὶ (and) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) μισῇ (should hate), ψεύστης (a liar) ἐστίν (he is). ὁ (The one) γὰρ (for) μὴ (not) ἀγαπῶν (loving) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ὃν (whom) ἑώρακεν (he has seen), τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), ὃν (whom) οὐχ (not) ἑώρακεν (he has seen), οὐ (not) δύναται (is he able) ἀγαπᾶν (to love).
