John 10:1-42

1 “Ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ὁ (the one) μὴ (not) εἰσερχόμενος (entering in) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) θύρας (door) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) αὐλὴν (fold) τῶν (of the) προβάτων (sheep), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀναβαίνων (climbing up) ἀλλαχόθεν (another way), ἐκεῖνος (he) κλέπτης (a thief) ἐστὶν (is) καὶ (and) λῃστής (a robber). 2 ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) εἰσερχόμενος (entering in) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) θύρας (door), ποιμήν (shepherd) ἐστιν (is) τῶν (of the) προβάτων (sheep). 3 τούτῳ (To him) ὁ (the) θυρωρὸς (doorkeeper) ἀνοίγει (opens), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep) τῆς (the) φωνῆς (voice) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἀκούει (hear), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ἴδια (own) πρόβατα (sheep) φωνεῖ (he calls) κατ’ (by) ὄνομα (name) καὶ (and) ἐξάγει (leads out) αὐτά (them). 4 Ὅταν (When) τὰ (the) ἴδια (own) πάντα (all) ἐκβάλῃ (he has brought out), ἔμπροσθεν (before) αὐτῶν (them) πορεύεται (he goes), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep) αὐτῷ (him) ἀκολουθεῖ (follow), ὅτι (because) οἴδασιν (they know) τὴν (the) φωνὴν (voice) αὐτοῦ (of him). 5 ἀλλοτρίῳ (A stranger) δὲ (however) οὐ (in no way) μὴ (not) ἀκολουθήσουσιν (they will follow), ἀλλὰ (but) φεύξονται (will flee) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him), ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) οἴδασιν (they recognize) τῶν (-) ἀλλοτρίων (of strangers) τὴν (the) φωνήν (voice).” 6 Ταύτην (This) τὴν (-) παροιμίαν (allegory) εἶπεν (spoke) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus); ἐκεῖνοι (they) δὲ (however) οὐκ (not) ἔγνωσαν (knew) τίνα (what) ἦν (it was) ἃ (that) ἐλάλει (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them). 7 Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) πάλιν (again) ‹αὐτοῖς› (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (-), ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ἡ (the) θύρα (door) τῶν (of the) προβάτων (sheep). 8 πάντες (All) ὅσοι (who ever) ἦλθον (came) πρὸ (before) ἐμοῦ (Me), κλέπται (thieves) εἰσὶν (are) καὶ (and) λῃσταί (robbers); ἀλλ’ (but) οὐκ (not) ἤκουσαν (did hear) αὐτῶν (them) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep). 9 ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ἡ (the) θύρα (door); δι’ (by) ἐμοῦ (Me) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) εἰσέλθῃ (enters in), σωθήσεται (he will be saved), καὶ (and) εἰσελεύσεται (he will go in) καὶ (and) ἐξελεύσεται (will go out), καὶ (and) νομὴν (pasture) εὑρήσει (will find). 10 ὁ (The) κλέπτης (thief) οὐκ (not) ἔρχεται (comes) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἵνα (that) κλέψῃ (he might steal), καὶ (and) θύσῃ (might kill), καὶ (and) ἀπολέσῃ (might destroy). ἐγὼ (I) ἦλθον (came) ἵνα (that) ζωὴν (life) ἔχωσιν (they may have), καὶ (and) περισσὸν (abundantly) ἔχωσιν (may have it). 11 Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ὁ (the) ποιμὴν (shepherd) ὁ (-) καλός (good). ὁ (The) ποιμὴν (shepherd) ὁ (-) καλὸς (good), τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τίθησιν (lays down) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (the) προβάτων (sheep); 12 ὁ (the) μισθωτὸς (hired servant) καὶ (however) οὐκ (not) ὢν (being) ποιμήν (the shepherd), οὗ (whose) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (are) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep) ἴδια (own), θεωρεῖ (sees) τὸν (the) λύκον (wolf) ἐρχόμενον (coming), καὶ (and) ἀφίησιν (leaves) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep), καὶ (and) φεύγει (flees)— καὶ (and) ὁ (the) λύκος (wolf) ἁρπάζει (snatches) αὐτὰ (them) καὶ (and) σκορπίζει (scatters)— 13 ὅτι (because) μισθωτός (a hired servant) ἐστιν (he is), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) μέλει (is himself concerned) αὐτῷ (to him) περὶ (about) τῶν (the) προβάτων (sheep). 14 Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ὁ (the) ποιμὴν (shepherd) ὁ (-) καλός (good); καὶ (and) γινώσκω (I know) τὰ (-) ἐμὰ (My own), καὶ (and) γινώσκουσί (am known) με (I) τὰ (by) ἐμά (Mine). 15 καθὼς (As) γινώσκει (knows) με (Me) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), κἀγὼ (I also) γινώσκω (know) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father); καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ψυχήν (life) μου (of Me) τίθημι (I lay down) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (the) προβάτων (sheep). 16 καὶ (And) ἄλλα (other) πρόβατα (sheep) ἔχω (I have), ἃ (which) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (are) ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) αὐλῆς (fold) ταύτης (this); κἀκεῖνα (those also) δεῖ (it behooves) με (Me) ἀγαγεῖν (to bring), καὶ (and) τῆς (the) φωνῆς (voice) μου (of Me) ἀκούσουσιν (they will hear); καὶ (and) γενήσονται* (there will be) μία (one) ποίμνη (flock), εἷς (with one) ποιμήν (shepherd). 17 Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτό (this), με (Me) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἀγαπᾷ (loves), ὅτι (because) ἐγὼ (I) τίθημι (lay down) τὴν (the) ψυχήν (life) μου (of Me), ἵνα (that) πάλιν (again) λάβω (I might take) αὐτήν (it). 18 οὐδεὶς (No one) αἴρει* (takes) αὐτὴν (it) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐγὼ (I) τίθημι (lay down) αὐτὴν (it) ἀπ’ (of) ἐμαυτοῦ (Myself). ἐξουσίαν (Authority) ἔχω (I have) θεῖναι (to lay down) αὐτήν (it), καὶ (and) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ἔχω (I have) πάλιν (again) λαβεῖν (to take) αὐτήν (it). ταύτην (This) τὴν (-) ἐντολὴν (commandment) ἔλαβον (I received) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me).” 19 Σχίσμα (Division) πάλιν (again) ἐγένετο (there was) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews) διὰ (on account of) τοὺς (the) λόγους (words) τούτους (these). 20 ἔλεγον (Were saying) δὲ (now) πολλοὶ (many) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them), “Δαιμόνιον (A demon) ἔχει (He has), καὶ (and) μαίνεται (is insane); τί (why) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἀκούετε (do you listen to)?” 21 Ἄλλοι (Others) ἔλεγον (were saying), “Ταῦτα (These) τὰ (-) ῥήματα (sayings) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (are those) δαιμονιζομένου (of one possessed by a demon). μὴ (Not) δαιμόνιον (a demon) δύναται (is able) τυφλῶν (of the blind) ὀφθαλμοὺς (the eyes) ἀνοῖξαι (to open)?” 22 Ἐγένετο (Took place) τότε (at the time) τὰ (the) ἐνκαίνια (Feast of Dedication), ἐν (at) τοῖς (-) Ἱεροσολύμοις (Jerusalem). χειμὼν (Winter) ἦν (it was), 23 καὶ (and) περιεπάτει (was walking) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) στοᾷ (porch) τοῦ (-) Σολομῶνος (of Solomon). 24 ἐκύκλωσαν (Encircled) οὖν (therefore) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), καὶ (and) ἔλεγον (they were saying) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ἕως (Until) πότε (when) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (soul) ἡμῶν (of us) αἴρεις (hold You in suspense)? εἰ (If) σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ), εἰπὲ* (tell) ἡμῖν (us) παρρησίᾳ (plainly).” 25 Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Εἶπον (I told) ὑμῖν (you), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) πιστεύετε (you believe). τὰ (The) ἔργα (works) ἃ (that) ἐγὼ (I) ποιῶ (do) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me), ταῦτα (these) μαρτυρεῖ (bear witness) περὶ (concerning) ἐμοῦ (Me). 26 ἀλλὰ (But) ὑμεῖς (you) οὐ (not) πιστεύετε (believe), ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἐστὲ (you are) ἐκ (from among) τῶν (the) προβάτων (sheep) τῶν (-) ἐμῶν (of Me). 27 τὰ (The) πρόβατα (sheep) τὰ (-) ἐμὰ (of Me), τῆς (the) φωνῆς (voice) μου (of Me) ἀκούουσιν (hear), κἀγὼ (and I) γινώσκω (know) αὐτά (them), καὶ (and) ἀκολουθοῦσίν (they follow) μοι (Me); 28 κἀγὼ (and I) δίδωμι (give) αὐτοῖς (them) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal); καὶ (and) οὐ (never) μὴ (not) ἀπόλωνται (shall they perish), εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age), καὶ (and) οὐχ (never) ἁρπάσει (will seize) τις (anyone) αὐτὰ (them) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) χειρός (hand) μου (of Me). 29 ὁ (The) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ὃ (who) δέδωκέν (has given them) μοι (to Me), πάντων (than all) μεῖζόν (greater) ἐστιν (is), καὶ (and) οὐδεὶς (no one) δύναται (is able) ἁρπάζειν (to seize them) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) χειρὸς (hand) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father). 30 ἐγὼ (I) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἕν (one) ἐσμεν (are).” 31 Ἐβάστασαν (Took up) ‹οὖν› (therefore) πάλιν (again) λίθους (stones) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), ἵνα (that) λιθάσωσιν (they might stone) αὐτόν (Him). 32 ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Πολλὰ (Many) ἔργα (works) «ἔδειξα (I have shown) ὑμῖν» (you) καλὰ (good) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father); διὰ (because of) ποῖον (which) αὐτῶν (of these) ἔργον (work), ἐμὲ (Me) λιθάζετε (do you stone)?” 33 Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) αὐτῷ (Him) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), “Περὶ (For) καλοῦ (a good) ἔργου (work) οὐ (not) λιθάζομέν (we do stone) σε (You), ἀλλὰ (but) περὶ (for) βλασφημίας (blasphemy), καὶ (and) ὅτι (because) σὺ (You), ἄνθρωπος (a man) ὢν (being), ποιεῖς (make) σεαυτὸν (yourself) Θεόν (God).” 34 Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (is it) γεγραμμένον (written) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) ὑμῶν (of you) ὅτι (-): ‘Ἐγὼ (I) εἶπα (said) Θεοί (gods) ἐστε (you are)’? 35 εἰ (If) ἐκείνους (them) εἶπεν (he called) θεοὺς (gods), πρὸς (to) οὓς (whom) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐγένετο (came), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) δύναται (is able) λυθῆναι (to be broken) ἡ (the) γραφή (Scripture), 36 ὃν (of Him whom) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἡγίασεν (sanctified) καὶ (and) ἀπέστειλεν (sent) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ὑμεῖς (you) λέγετε (do say) ὅτι (-), ‘Βλασφημεῖς (You blaspheme),’ ὅτι (because) εἶπον (I said), ‘Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εἰμι (I am)’? 37 Εἰ (If) οὐ (not) ποιῶ (I do) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me), μὴ (not) πιστεύετέ (believe) μοι (Me). 38 εἰ (If) δὲ (however) ποιῶ (I do), κἂν (even if) ἐμοὶ (Me) μὴ (not) πιστεύητε (you believe), τοῖς (the) ἔργοις (works) πιστεύετε (believe), ἵνα (so that) γνῶτε (you may know) καὶ (and) γινώσκητε (may understand) ὅτι (that) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me is) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), κἀγὼ (and I) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Πατρί (Father).” 39 Ἐζήτουν (They were seeking) οὖν (therefore) αὐτὸν (Him) πάλιν (again) πιάσαι (to seize), καὶ (but) ἐξῆλθεν (He went forth) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) χειρὸς (hand) αὐτῶν (of them). 40 Καὶ (And) ἀπῆλθεν (He departed) πάλιν (again) πέραν (beyond) τοῦ (the) Ἰορδάνου (Jordan), εἰς (to) τὸν (the) τόπον (place) ὅπου (where) ἦν (was) Ἰωάννης (John) τὸ (-) πρῶτον (at first) βαπτίζων (baptizing). καὶ (And) ἔμεινεν* (He stayed) ἐκεῖ (there). 41 καὶ (And) πολλοὶ (many) ἦλθον (came) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) ἔλεγον (were saying) ὅτι (-), “Ἰωάννης (John) μὲν (indeed) σημεῖον (sign) ἐποίησεν (did) οὐδέν (no); πάντα (everything) δὲ (however) ὅσα (that) εἶπεν (said) Ἰωάννης (John) περὶ (about) τούτου (this man), ἀληθῆ (true) ἦν (was).” 42 καὶ (And) πολλοὶ (many) ἐπίστευσαν (believed) εἰς (in) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐκεῖ (there).
