¹ Οὐδὲν (There is no) ἄρα (therefore) νῦν (now) κατάκριμα (condemnation) τοῖς (to those) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus). ² ὁ (-) γὰρ (For) νόμος (the law) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) τῆς (of) ζωῆς (life) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) ἠλευθέρωσέν (has set free) σε (you) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin) καὶ (and) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (of death). ³ τὸ (-) γὰρ (For) ἀδύνατον (powerless being) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law), ἐν (in) ᾧ (that) ἠσθένει (it was weak) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) σαρκός (flesh), ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), τὸν (-) ἑαυτοῦ (of Himself) Υἱὸν (Son) πέμψας (having sent), ἐν (in) ὁμοιώματι (likeness) σαρκὸς (of flesh) ἁμαρτίας (of sin), καὶ (and) περὶ (for) ἁμαρτίας (sin), κατέκρινεν (condemned) τὴν (-) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σαρκί (flesh), ⁴ ἵνα (so that) τὸ (the) δικαίωμα (righteousness) τοῦ (of the) νόμου (law) πληρωθῇ (should be fulfilled) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us) τοῖς (-) μὴ (not) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (the flesh) περιπατοῦσιν (walking), ἀλλὰ (but) κατὰ (according to) πνεῦμα (the Spirit). ⁵ Οἱ (Those) γὰρ (for) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) ὄντες (being), τὰ (the things) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) φρονοῦσιν (mind); οἱ (those) δὲ (however) κατὰ (according to) πνεῦμα (Spirit), τὰ (the things) τοῦ (of the) πνεύματος (Spirit). ⁶ τὸ (The) γὰρ (for) φρόνημα (mind) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) θάνατος (is death); τὸ (the) δὲ (but) φρόνημα (mind) τοῦ (of the) πνεύματος (Spirit), ζωὴ (life) καὶ (and) εἰρήνη (peace), ⁷ διότι (because) τὸ (the) φρόνημα (mind) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) ἔχθρα (is hostility) εἰς (toward) Θεόν (God); τῷ (to) γὰρ (for) νόμῳ (the law) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) οὐχ (not) ὑποτάσσεται (it is subject), οὐδὲ (nor even) γὰρ (for) δύναται (can it be). ⁸ οἱ (Those) δὲ (now) ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (flesh) ὄντες (being), Θεῷ (God) ἀρέσαι (to please) οὐ (not) δύνανται (are able). ⁹ Ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (now) οὐκ (not) ἐστὲ (are) ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (flesh), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐν (in) πνεύματι (Spirit), εἴπερ (if indeed the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) Θεοῦ (of God) οἰκεῖ (dwells) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you); εἰ (if) δέ (however) τις (anyone) Πνεῦμα (the Spirit) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (has), οὗτος (he) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ¹⁰ εἰ (If) δὲ (however) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἐν (is in) ὑμῖν (you), τὸ (the) μὲν (indeed) σῶμα (body is) νεκρὸν (dead) διὰ (on account of) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), τὸ (the) δὲ (however) πνεῦμα (Spirit) ζωὴ (is life) διὰ (on account of) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness). ¹¹ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τοῦ (of the One) ἐγείραντος (having raised up) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) οἰκεῖ (dwells) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you), ὁ (the One) ἐγείρας (having raised up) «ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν» (the dead) Χριστὸν (Christ) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ζωοποιήσει (will give life) καὶ (also) τὰ (to the) θνητὰ (mortal) σώματα (bodies) ὑμῶν (of you), διὰ (on account of) τοῦ (-) ἐνοικοῦντος (dwelling) αὐτοῦ (His) Πνεύματος (Spirit) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you). ¹² Ἄρα (So) οὖν (then), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ὀφειλέται (debtors) ἐσμέν (we are), οὐ (not) τῇ (to the) σαρκὶ (flesh), τοῦ (-) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) ζῆν (to live). ¹³ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) ζῆτε (you live), μέλλετε (you are about) ἀποθνήσκειν (to die); εἰ (if) δὲ (however) πνεύματι (by the Spirit) τὰς (the) πράξεις (deeds) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) θανατοῦτε (you put to death), ζήσεσθε (you will live). ¹⁴ ὅσοι (As many as) γὰρ (for) Πνεύματι (by the Spirit) Θεοῦ (of God) ἄγονται (are led), οὗτοι (these) υἱοί (sons) εἰσιν (are) Θεοῦ (of God). ¹⁵ Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἐλάβετε (you have received) πνεῦμα (a spirit) δουλείας (of bondage) πάλιν (again) εἰς (to) φόβον (fear), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐλάβετε (you have received) πνεῦμα (the Spirit) υἱοθεσίας (of divine adoption as sons), ἐν (by) ᾧ (whom) κράζομεν (we cry), “Ἀββᾶ (Abba)! ὁ (-) Πατήρ (Father)!” ¹⁶ αὐτὸ (Himself) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) συμμαρτυρεῖ (bears witness with) τῷ (the) πνεύματι (spirit) ἡμῶν (of us) ὅτι (that) ἐσμὲν (we are) τέκνα (children) Θεοῦ (of God). ¹⁷ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) τέκνα (children), καὶ (also) κληρονόμοι (heirs), κληρονόμοι (heirs) μὲν (indeed) Θεοῦ (of God), συνκληρονόμοι (joint-heirs) δὲ (now) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), εἴπερ (if indeed) συμπάσχομεν (we suffer with Him), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) συνδοξασθῶμεν (we may be glorified together). ¹⁸ Λογίζομαι (I reckon) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) ἄξια (comparable) τὰ (the) παθήματα (sufferings) τοῦ (of the) νῦν (present) καιροῦ (time are) πρὸς (to) τὴν (the) μέλλουσαν (coming) δόξαν (glory) ἀποκαλυφθῆναι (to be revealed) εἰς (to) ἡμᾶς (us). ¹⁹ ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) ἀποκαραδοκία (earnest expectation) τῆς (of the) κτίσεως (creation), τὴν (the) ἀποκάλυψιν (revelation) τῶν (of the) υἱῶν (sons) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἀπεκδέχεται (awaits). ²⁰ τῇ (To the) γὰρ (for) ματαιότητι (futility), ἡ (the) κτίσις (creation) ὑπετάγη (was subjected), οὐχ (not) ἑκοῦσα (willingly), ἀλλὰ (but) διὰ (because of) τὸν (the One) ὑποτάξαντα (having subjected it), ἐφ’ (in) ἑλπίδι (hope) ²¹ ὅτι* (that) καὶ (also) αὐτὴ (itself) ἡ (the) κτίσις (creation) ἐλευθερωθήσεται (will be set free) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) δουλείας (bondage) τῆς (-) φθορᾶς (of decay), εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ἐλευθερίαν (freedom) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τῶν (of the) τέκνων (children) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ²² Οἴδαμεν (We know) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) πᾶσα (all) ἡ (the) κτίσις (creation) συστενάζει (groans together) καὶ (and) συνωδίνει (travails together) ἄχρι (until) τοῦ (-) νῦν (now). ²³ οὐ (Not) μόνον (only so) δέ (now), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (even) αὐτοὶ (ourselves), τὴν (the) ἀπαρχὴν (firstfruit) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) ἔχοντες (having), ἡμεῖς (we) καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (ourselves) ἐν (in) ἑαυτοῖς (ourselves) στενάζομεν (groan), υἱοθεσίαν (divine adoption as sons) ἀπεκδεχόμενοι (awaiting), τὴν (the) ἀπολύτρωσιν (redemption) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) ἡμῶν (of us). ²⁴ τῇ (In this) γὰρ (for) ἐλπίδι (hope) ἐσώθημεν (we were saved); ἐλπὶς (hope) δὲ (however) βλεπομένη (being seen), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐλπίς (hope); ὃ (what) γὰρ (for) βλέπει (sees) τις (any) τί (one), ἐλπίζει (does he hope for)? ²⁵ εἰ (If) δὲ (however), ὃ (what) οὐ (not) βλέπομεν (we see) ἐλπίζομεν (we hope for), δι’ (in) ὑπομονῆς (patience) ἀπεκδεχόμεθα (we await). ²⁶ Ὡσαύτως (Likewise) δὲ (now) καὶ (also), τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) συναντιλαμβάνεται (joins to help) τῇ (the) ἀσθενείᾳ (weakness) ἡμῶν (of us); τὸ (the) γὰρ (for) τί (things which) προσευξώμεθα (we should pray for) καθὸ (as) δεῖ (it behooves), οὐκ (not) οἴδαμεν (we know), ἀλλὰ (but) αὐτὸ (Himself) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) ὑπερεντυγχάνει (makes intercession), στεναγμοῖς (with groanings) ἀλαλήτοις (inexpressible). ²⁷ ὁ (The One) δὲ (now) ἐραυνῶν (searching) τὰς (-) καρδίας (hearts) οἶδεν (knows) τί (what is) τὸ (the) φρόνημα (mindset) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματος (Spirit), ὅτι (because) κατὰ (according to) Θεὸν (God), ἐντυγχάνει (He intercedes) ὑπὲρ (for) ἁγίων (the saints). ²⁸ Οἴδαμεν (We know) δὲ (now) ὅτι (that) τοῖς (to those) ἀγαπῶσιν (loving) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), πάντα (all things) συνεργεῖ (works together) (ὁ (-) θεὸς) (God) εἰς (for) ἀγαθόν (good), τοῖς (to those) κατὰ (according to) πρόθεσιν (His purpose) κλητοῖς (called) οὖσιν (being). ²⁹ ὅτι (For) οὓς (those whom) προέγνω (He foreknew), καὶ (also) προώρισεν (He predestined to be) συμμόρφους (conformed to) τῆς (the) εἰκόνος (image) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) εἶναι (to be) αὐτὸν (Him) πρωτότοκον (firstborn) ἐν (among) πολλοῖς (many) ἀδελφοῖς (brothers). ³⁰ οὓς (Those whom) δὲ (then) προώρισεν (He predestined), τούτους (these) καὶ (also) ἐκάλεσεν (He called); καὶ (and) οὓς (whom) ἐκάλεσεν (He called), τούτους (these) καὶ (also) ἐδικαίωσεν (He justified); οὓς (whom) δὲ (then) ἐδικαίωσεν (He justified), τούτους (these) καὶ (also) ἐδόξασεν (He glorified). ³¹ Τί (What) οὖν (then) ἐροῦμεν (will we say) πρὸς (to) ταῦτα (these things)? εἰ (If) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God is) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us), τίς (who can be) καθ’ (against) ἡμῶν (us)? ³² ὅς (He who) γε (indeed) τοῦ (the) ἰδίου (own) Υἱοῦ (Son) οὐκ (not) ἐφείσατο (spared), ἀλλὰ (but) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) πάντων (all) παρέδωκεν (gave up) αὐτόν (Him), πῶς (how) οὐχὶ (not) καὶ (also) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him), τὰ (things) πάντα (all) ἡμῖν (us) χαρίσεται (will He grant)? ³³ τίς (Who) ἐγκαλέσει (will bring an accusation) κατὰ (against) ἐκλεκτῶν (the elect) Θεοῦ (of God)? Θεὸς (God is) ὁ (the One) δικαιῶν (justifying). ³⁴ τίς (Who is) ὁ (the one) κατακρινῶν (condemning)? Χριστὸς (For it is Christ) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ὁ (the one) ἀποθανών (having died), μᾶλλον (rather) δὲ (now) ἐγερθείς (having been raised up), ὅς (who) ‹καί› (also) ἐστιν (is) ἐν (at the) δεξιᾷ (right hand) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὃς (who) καὶ (and) ἐντυγχάνει (is interceding) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us). ³⁵ Τίς (Who) ἡμᾶς (us) χωρίσει (will separate) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) ἀγάπης (love) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ)? θλῖψις (Tribulation), ἢ (or) στενοχωρία (distress), ἢ (or) διωγμὸς (persecution), ἢ (or) λιμὸς (famine), ἢ (or) γυμνότης (nakedness), ἢ (or) κίνδυνος (danger), ἢ (or) μάχαιρα (sword)? ³⁶ καθὼς (As) γέγραπται (it has been written) ὅτι (-): “Ἕνεκεν (For the sake) σοῦ (of you), θανατούμεθα (we face death) ὅλην (all) τὴν (the) ἡμέραν (day); ἐλογίσθημεν (we were regarded) ὡς (as) πρόβατα (sheep) σφαγῆς (of slaughter).” ³⁷ Ἀλλ’ (But) ἐν (in) τούτοις (these things) πᾶσιν (all), ὑπερνικῶμεν (we more than conquer) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the One) ἀγαπήσαντος (having loved) ἡμᾶς (us). ³⁸ πέπεισμαι (I am persuaded) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) οὔτε (neither) θάνατος (death), οὔτε (nor) ζωὴ (life), οὔτε (nor) ἄγγελοι (angels), οὔτε (nor) ἀρχαὶ (principalities), οὔτε (nor) ἐνεστῶτα (things present), οὔτε (nor) μέλλοντα (things to come), οὔτε (nor) δυνάμεις (powers), ³⁹ οὔτε (nor) ὕψωμα (height), οὔτε (nor) βάθος (depth), οὔτε (nor) τις (any) κτίσις (created thing) ἑτέρα (other), δυνήσεται (will be able) ἡμᾶς (us) χωρίσαι (to separate) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) ἀγάπης (love) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τῆς (-) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) τῷ (the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us).

³¹ Εἴτε (Whether) οὖν (therefore) ἐσθίετε (you eat), εἴτε (or) πίνετε (drink), εἴτε (or) τι (whatever) ποιεῖτε (you do), πάντα (all things) εἰς (to the) δόξαν (glory) Θεοῦ (of God) ποιεῖτε (do).

⁹ ἐὰν (If) ὁμολογῶμεν (we should confess) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins) ἡμῶν (of us), πιστός (faithful) ἐστιν (He is) καὶ (and) δίκαιος (just), ἵνα (that) ἀφῇ (He may forgive) ἡμῖν (us) τὰς (our) ἁμαρτίας (sins), καὶ (and) καθαρίσῃ (might cleanse) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) πάσης (all) ἀδικίας (unrighteousness).

¹ Ἔστιν (Is) δὲ (now) πίστις (faith) ἐλπιζομένων (of things hoped for) ὑπόστασις (the assurance), πραγμάτων (of things) ἔλεγχος (the conviction) οὐ (not) βλεπομένων (being seen). ² ἐν (In) ταύτῃ (this) γὰρ (for) ἐμαρτυρήθησαν (were commended) οἱ (the) πρεσβύτεροι (ancients). ³ Πίστει (By faith) νοοῦμεν (we understand) κατηρτίσθαι (to have been formed) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (universe) ῥήματι (by the word) Θεοῦ (of God), εἰς (so that) τὸ (which) μὴ (not) ἐκ (from things) φαινομένων (being visible), τὸ (the things) βλεπόμενον (being seen) γεγονέναι (have been made). ⁴ Πίστει (By faith) πλείονα (a more excellent) θυσίαν (sacrifice) Ἅβελ (Abel) παρὰ (than) Κάϊν (Cain) προσήνεγκεν (offered) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), δι’ (through) ἧς (which) ἐμαρτυρήθη (he was testified) εἶναι (to be) δίκαιος (righteous), μαρτυροῦντος (bearing witness) ἐπὶ (to) τοῖς (the) δώροις (gifts) αὐτοῦ (of him) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God); καὶ (and) δι’ (through) αὐτῆς (it), ἀποθανὼν (having died), ἔτι (still) λαλεῖ (he speaks). ⁵ Πίστει (By faith) Ἑνὼχ (Enoch) μετετέθη (was translated), τοῦ (-) μὴ (not) ἰδεῖν (to see) θάνατον (death); καὶ (and) οὐχ (not) ηὑρίσκετο (was he found), διότι (because) μετέθηκεν (had taken up) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (-) Θεός (God). πρὸ (Before) γὰρ (for) τῆς (the) μεταθέσεως (translation), μεμαρτύρηται (he was commended) εὐαρεστηκέναι (to have pleased) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God). ⁶ χωρὶς (Without) δὲ (now) πίστεως (faith), ἀδύνατον (it is impossible) εὐαρεστῆσαι (to please Him). πιστεῦσαι (To believe) γὰρ (for) δεῖ (it behooves) τὸν (the one) προσερχόμενον (drawing near) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), ὅτι (that) ἔστιν (He exists), καὶ (and that) τοῖς (to those) ἐκζητοῦσιν (earnestly seeking out) αὐτὸν (Him), μισθαποδότης (a rewarder) γίνεται (He becomes). ⁷ Πίστει (By faith) χρηματισθεὶς (having been divinely instructed) Νῶε (Noah) περὶ (concerning) τῶν (the things) μηδέπω (not yet) βλεπομένων (seen), εὐλαβηθεὶς (having been moved with fear), κατεσκεύασεν (prepared) κιβωτὸν (an ark) εἰς (for) σωτηρίαν (the salvation) τοῦ (of the) οἴκου (household) αὐτοῦ (of him), δι’ (by) ἧς (which) κατέκρινεν (he condemned) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) κατὰ (according to) πίστιν (faith) δικαιοσύνης (righteousness that is), ἐγένετο (he became) κληρονόμος (heir). ⁸ Πίστει (By faith) καλούμενος (being called), Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) ὑπήκουσεν (obeyed) ἐξελθεῖν (to go out) εἰς (into) τόπον (a place) ὃν (that) ἤμελλεν (he was going) λαμβάνειν (to receive) εἰς (for) κληρονομίαν (an inheritance), καὶ (and) ἐξῆλθεν (went out), μὴ (not) ἐπιστάμενος (knowing) ποῦ (where) ἔρχεται (he is going). ⁹ Πίστει (By faith) παρῴκησεν (he sojourned) εἰς (in) γῆν (the land) τῆς (of the) ἐπαγγελίας (promise), ὡς (as in) ἀλλοτρίαν (a foreign country), ἐν (in) σκηναῖς (tents) κατοικήσας (having dwelt) μετὰ (with) Ἰσαὰκ (Isaac) καὶ (and) Ἰακὼβ (Jacob), τῶν (the) συνκληρονόμων (joint-heirs) τῆς (of the) ἐπαγγελίας (promise) τῆς (-) αὐτῆς (same). ¹⁰ ἐξεδέχετο (He was awaiting) γὰρ (for) τὴν (the) τοὺς (-) θεμελίους (foundations) ἔχουσαν (having) πόλιν (city), ἧς (of which) τεχνίτης (the architect) καὶ (and) δημιουργὸς (builder is) ὁ (-) Θεός (God). ¹¹ Πίστει (By faith) καὶ (also), αὐτῇ (herself) Σάρρᾳ (Sarah) [στεῖρα] (barren), δύναμιν (power) εἰς (for) καταβολὴν (the conception) σπέρματος (of seed) ἔλαβεν (received), καὶ (even) παρὰ (beyond) καιρὸν (the opportune) ἡλικίας (age), ἐπεὶ (since) πιστὸν (faithful) ἡγήσατο (she considered) τὸν (the One) ἐπαγγειλάμενον (having promised). ¹² διὸ (Therefore) καὶ (also) ἀφ’ (from) ἑνὸς (one man) ἐγεννήθησαν (were born), καὶ (and) ταῦτα (he) νενεκρωμένου (having been as good as dead), καθὼς (as) τὰ (the) ἄστρα (stars) τοῦ (of) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) τῷ (-) πλήθει (in multitude), καὶ (and) ὡς (as) ἡ (the) ἄμμος (sand) ἡ (-) παρὰ (by) τὸ (the) χεῖλος (shore) τῆς (of the) θαλάσσης (sea) ἡ (-) ἀναρίθμητος (countless). ¹³ Κατὰ (In) πίστιν (faith) ἀπέθανον (died) οὗτοι (these) πάντες (all), μὴ (not) κομισάμενοι (having received) τὰς (the) ἐπαγγελίας (promises), ἀλλὰ (but) πόρρωθεν (from afar) αὐτὰς (them) ἰδόντες (having seen), καὶ (and) ἀσπασάμενοι (having embraced them), καὶ (and) ὁμολογήσαντες (having confessed) ὅτι (that) ξένοι (strangers) καὶ (and) παρεπίδημοί (sojourners) εἰσιν (they are) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth). ¹⁴ οἱ (Those) γὰρ (for) τοιαῦτα (such things) λέγοντες (saying) ἐμφανίζουσιν (make manifest) ὅτι (that their) πατρίδα (own country) ἐπιζητοῦσιν (they are seeking). ¹⁵ καὶ (And) εἰ (if) μὲν (indeed) ἐκείνης (that) ἐμνημόνευον (they had been remembering) ἀφ’ (from) ἧς (where) ἐξέβησαν (they came out), εἶχον (they would have had) ἂν (-) καιρὸν (opportunity) ἀνακάμψαι (to return). ¹⁶ νῦν (Now) δὲ (however) κρείττονος (a better one) ὀρέγονται (they stretch forward to), τοῦτ’ (that) ἔστιν (is), ἐπουρανίου (a heavenly one). διὸ (Therefore) οὐκ (not) ἐπαισχύνεται (is ashamed of) αὐτοὺς (them) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), Θεὸς (God) ἐπικαλεῖσθαι (to be called) αὐτῶν (of them); ἡτοίμασεν (He has prepared) γὰρ (indeed) αὐτοῖς (for them) πόλιν (a city). ¹⁷ Πίστει (By faith) προσενήνοχεν (has offered up) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) τὸν (-) Ἰσαὰκ (Isaac). πειραζόμενος (Being tested), καὶ (even) τὸν (his) μονογενῆ (only begotten son) προσέφερεν (was offering up) ὁ (the one) τὰς (the) ἐπαγγελίας (promises) ἀναδεξάμενος (having received), ¹⁸ πρὸς (as to) ὃν (whom) ἐλαλήθη (it was said) ὅτι (-), “Ἐν (In) Ἰσαὰκ (Isaac) κληθήσεταί (will be reckoned) σοι (your) σπέρμα (offspring),” ¹⁹ λογισάμενος (having reasoned) ὅτι (that) καὶ (even) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) ἐγείρειν (to raise), δυνατὸς (able was) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), ὅθεν (from where) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) παραβολῇ (a simile), ἐκομίσατο (he received). ²⁰ Πίστει (By faith) καὶ (also) περὶ (concerning) μελλόντων (the things coming), εὐλόγησεν (blessed) Ἰσαὰκ (Isaac) τὸν (-) Ἰακὼβ (Jacob) καὶ (and) τὸν (-) Ἠσαῦ (Esau). ²¹ Πίστει (By faith) Ἰακὼβ (Jacob), ἀποθνῄσκων (dying), ἕκαστον (each) τῶν (of the) υἱῶν (sons) Ἰωσὴφ (of Joseph) εὐλόγησεν (blessed), καὶ (and) προσεκύνησεν (worshiped) ἐπὶ (on) τὸ (the) ἄκρον (top) τῆς (of the) ῥάβδου (staff) αὐτοῦ (of him). ²² Πίστει (By faith) Ἰωσὴφ (Joseph), τελευτῶν (dying), περὶ (concerning) τῆς (the) ἐξόδου (exodus) τῶν (of the) υἱῶν (sons) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel) ἐμνημόνευσεν (made mention), καὶ (and) περὶ (concerning) τῶν (the) ὀστέων (bones) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐνετείλατο (gave instructions). ²³ Πίστει (By faith) Μωϋσῆς (Moses), γεννηθεὶς (having been born), ἐκρύβη (was hidden) τρίμηνον (three months) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (the) πατέρων (parents) αὐτοῦ (of him), διότι (because) εἶδον (they saw) ἀστεῖον (was beautiful) τὸ (the) παιδίον (little child), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐφοβήθησαν (they did fear) τὸ (the) διάταγμα (edict) τοῦ (of the) βασιλέως (king). ²⁴ Πίστει (By faith) Μωϋσῆς (Moses), μέγας (grown) γενόμενος (having become), ἠρνήσατο (refused) λέγεσθαι (to be called) υἱὸς (the son) θυγατρὸς (of the daughter) Φαραώ (of Pharaoh), ²⁵ μᾶλλον (rather) ἑλόμενος (having chosen) συνκακουχεῖσθαι (to suffer affliction with) τῷ (the) λαῷ (people) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἢ (than) πρόσκαιρον (the temporary) ἔχειν (to have) ἁμαρτίας (of sin) ἀπόλαυσιν (enjoyment), ²⁶ μείζονα (greater) πλοῦτον (wealth) ἡγησάμενος (having esteemed) τῶν (than the) Αἰγύπτου (of Egypt) θησαυρῶν (treasures) τὸν (the) ὀνειδισμὸν (reproach) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ); ἀπέβλεπεν (he was looking) γὰρ (for) εἰς (toward) τὴν (the) μισθαποδοσίαν (reward). ²⁷ Πίστει (By faith) κατέλιπεν (he left) Αἴγυπτον (Egypt), μὴ (not) φοβηθεὶς (having feared) τὸν (the) θυμὸν (anger) τοῦ (of the) βασιλέως (king); τὸν (the) γὰρ (for) ἀόρατον (Invisible One) ὡς (as) ὁρῶν (seeing), ἐκαρτέρησεν (he persevered). ²⁸ Πίστει (By faith) πεποίηκεν (he has kept) τὸ (the) πάσχα (Passover) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) πρόσχυσιν (sprinkling) τοῦ (of the) αἵματος (blood), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ὁ (the one) ὀλοθρεύων (destroying) τὰ (the) πρωτότοκα (firstborn) θίγῃ (would touch) αὐτῶν (them). ²⁹ Πίστει (By faith) διέβησαν (they passed through) τὴν (the) Ἐρυθρὰν (Red) Θάλασσαν (Sea), ὡς (as) διὰ (through) ξηρᾶς (dry) γῆς (land), ἧς (which) πεῖραν (an attempt) λαβόντες (having made), οἱ (the) Αἰγύπτιοι (Egyptians) κατεπόθησαν (were swallowed up). ³⁰ Πίστει (By faith) τὰ (the) τείχη (walls) Ἰεριχὼ (of Jericho) ἔπεσαν (fell), κυκλωθέντα (having been encircled) ἐπὶ (for) ἑπτὰ (seven) ἡμέρας (days). ³¹ Πίστει (By faith) Ῥαὰβ (Rahab) ἡ (the) πόρνη (prostitute) οὐ (not) συναπώλετο (did perish with) τοῖς (those) ἀπειθήσασιν (having disobeyed), δεξαμένη (having received) τοὺς (the) κατασκόπους (spies) μετ’ (with) εἰρήνης (peace). ³² Καὶ (And) τί (what) ἔτι (more) λέγω (shall I say)? ἐπιλείψει (Will fail) με (me) γὰρ (for) διηγούμενον (telling) ὁ (the) χρόνος (time), περὶ (of) Γεδεών (Gideon), Βαράκ (Barak), Σαμψών (Samson), Ἰεφθάε (Jephthah), Δαυίδ (David) τε (also), καὶ (and) Σαμουὴλ (Samuel), καὶ (and) τῶν (the) προφητῶν (prophets), ³³ οἳ (who) διὰ (by) πίστεως (faith) κατηγωνίσαντο (conquered) βασιλείας (kingdoms), εἰργάσαντο* (administered) δικαιοσύνην (justice), ἐπέτυχον (obtained) ἐπαγγελιῶν (promises); ἔφραξαν (shut) στόματα (the mouths) λεόντων (of lions), ³⁴ ἔσβεσαν (quenched) δύναμιν (the power) πυρός (of fire), ἔφυγον (escaped) στόματα (the mouths) μαχαίρης (of the sword); ἐδυναμώθησαν (acquired strength) ἀπὸ (out of) ἀσθενείας (weakness), ἐγενήθησαν (became) ἰσχυροὶ (mighty) ἐν (in) πολέμῳ (war), παρεμβολὰς (the armies) ἔκλιναν (put to flight) ἀλλοτρίων (of foreigners). ³⁵ Ἔλαβον (Received back) γυναῖκες (women) ἐξ (by) ἀναστάσεως (resurrection) τοὺς (the) νεκροὺς (dead) αὐτῶν (of them); ἄλλοι (others) δὲ (then) ἐτυμπανίσθησαν (were tortured), οὐ (not) προσδεξάμενοι (having accepted) τὴν (-) ἀπολύτρωσιν (release), ἵνα (so that) κρείττονος (a better) ἀναστάσεως (resurrection) τύχωσιν (they might obtain). ³⁶ ἕτεροι (Others) δὲ (then) ἐμπαιγμῶν (of mockings) καὶ (and) μαστίγων (of scourgings), πεῖραν (trial) ἔλαβον (received); ἔτι (in addition), δὲ (also) δεσμῶν (of chains) καὶ (and) φυλακῆς (imprisonment). ³⁷ Ἐλιθάσθησαν (They were stoned), ἐπρίσθησαν (they were sawed in two), ἐν (by) φόνῳ (slaughter) μαχαίρης (of the sword) ἀπέθανον (they were killed); περιῆλθον (they wandered) ἐν (in) μηλωταῖς (sheepskins), ἐν (in) αἰγείοις (goats’) δέρμασιν (skins), ὑστερούμενοι (being destitute), θλιβόμενοι (being oppressed), κακουχούμενοι (being mistreated); ³⁸ ὧν (of whom) οὐκ (not) ἦν (was) ἄξιος (worthy) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world); ἐπὶ (in) ἐρημίαις (deserts) πλανώμενοι (wandering), καὶ (and) ὄρεσιν (mountains), καὶ (and) σπηλαίοις (caves), καὶ (and) ταῖς (-) ὀπαῖς (holes) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth). ³⁹ Καὶ (And) οὗτοι (these) πάντες (all), μαρτυρηθέντες (having been commended) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) πίστεως (faith), οὐκ (not) ἐκομίσαντο (did receive) τὴν (the) ἐπαγγελίαν (promise), ⁴⁰ τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) περὶ (for) ἡμῶν (us) κρεῖττόν (better) τι (something) προβλεψαμένου (having planned), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) χωρὶς (apart from) ἡμῶν (us) τελειωθῶσιν (they should be made perfect).

⁴ ὅσα (Whatever) γὰρ (for) προεγράφη (was written in the past), (πάντα) (all) εἰς (for) τὴν (-) ἡμετέραν (our) διδασκαλίαν (instruction) ἐγράφη (was written), ἵνα (so that) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) ὑπομονῆς (endurance) καὶ (and) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) παρακλήσεως (encouragement) τῶν (of the) γραφῶν (Scriptures), τὴν (-) ἐλπίδα (hope) ἔχωμεν (we might have).

²⁶ “Ὀργίζεσθε (Be angry), καὶ (and yet) μὴ (not) ἁμαρτάνετε (sin).” ὁ (The) ἥλιος (sun) μὴ (not) ἐπιδυέτω (let set) ἐπὶ (upon) [τῷ] (-) παροργισμῷ (anger) ὑμῶν (of you);

²⁶ Πάντες (All) γὰρ (for) υἱοὶ (sons) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐστε (you are) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) πίστεως (faith) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

³¹ Πᾶσα (All) πικρία (bitterness), καὶ (and) θυμὸς (rage), καὶ (and) ὀργὴ (anger), καὶ (and) κραυγὴ (clamor), καὶ (and) βλασφημία (slander), ἀρθήτω (let be removed) ἀφ’ (from) ὑμῶν (you), σὺν (along with) πάσῃ (all) κακίᾳ (malice).

² καὶ (And) μὴ (not) συσχηματίζεσθε (be conformed) τῷ (to the) αἰῶνι (age) τούτῳ (this), ἀλλὰ (but) μεταμορφοῦσθε (be transformed) τῇ (by the) ἀνακαινώσει (renewing) τοῦ (of the) νοός (mind), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) δοκιμάζειν (to prove) ὑμᾶς (by you), τί (what is) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τὸ (-) ἀγαθὸν (good) καὶ (and) εὐάρεστον (well-pleasing) καὶ (and) τέλειον (perfect).

¹³ Κακοπαθεῖ (Is suffering hardships) τις (anyone) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you)? προσευχέσθω (Let him pray). εὐθυμεῖ (Is cheerful) τις (anyone)? ψαλλέτω (Let him sing praises).

¹⁰ ὁ (The) κλέπτης (thief) οὐκ (not) ἔρχεται (comes) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἵνα (that) κλέψῃ (he might steal), καὶ (and) θύσῃ (might kill), καὶ (and) ἀπολέσῃ (might destroy). ἐγὼ (I) ἦλθον (came) ἵνα (that) ζωὴν (life) ἔχωσιν (they may have), καὶ (and) περισσὸν (abundantly) ἔχωσιν (may have it).

² Πᾶσαν (All) χαρὰν (joy) ἡγήσασθε (esteem it), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of me), ὅταν (when) πειρασμοῖς (trials) περιπέσητε (you might fall into) ποικίλοις (various), ³ γινώσκοντες (knowing) ὅτι (that) τὸ (the) δοκίμιον (testing) ὑμῶν (of your) τῆς (-) πίστεως (faith) κατεργάζεται (produces) ὑπομονήν (endurance). ⁴ ἡ (-) δὲ (And) ὑπομονὴ (endurance), ἔργον (work) τέλειον (its perfect) ἐχέτω (let have), ἵνα (so that) ἦτε (you may be) τέλειοι (perfect) καὶ (and) ὁλόκληροι (complete), ἐν (in) μηδενὶ (nothing) λειπόμενοι (lacking).
