³ Καὶ (And) ἔρχονται (they come), φέροντες (bringing) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) παραλυτικὸν (a paralytic), αἰρόμενον (being carried) ὑπὸ (by) τεσσάρων (four).

⁷ Καὶ (And) προσκαλεῖται (He calls near) τοὺς (the) δώδεκα (Twelve), καὶ (and) ἤρξατο (He began) αὐτοὺς (them) ἀποστέλλειν (to send forth) δύο (two) δύο (by two), καὶ (and) ἐδίδου (He gave) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἐξουσίαν (authority) τῶν (over the) πνευμάτων (spirits) τῶν (-) ἀκαθάρτων (unclean).

¹² Τότε (Then) ὑπέστρεψαν (they returned) εἰς (to) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem) ἀπὸ (from) ὄρους (the mount) τοῦ (-) καλουμένου (called) Ἐλαιῶνος (Olivet), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) ἐγγὺς (near) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem), σαββάτου (a Sabbath day’s) ἔχον (holding) ὁδόν (journey). ¹³ καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) εἰσῆλθον (they had entered) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ὑπερῷον (upper room), ἀνέβησαν (they went up) οὗ (where) ἦσαν (they were) καταμένοντες (staying), ὅ (-) τε (both) Πέτρος (Peter) καὶ (and) Ἰωάννης (John), καὶ (and) Ἰάκωβος (James) καὶ (and) Ἀνδρέας (Andrew), Φίλιππος (Philip) καὶ (and) Θωμᾶς (Thomas), Βαρθολομαῖος (Bartholomew) καὶ (and) Μαθθαῖος (Matthew), Ἰάκωβος (James son) Ἁλφαίου (of Alphaeus), καὶ (and) Σίμων (Simon) ὁ (the) Ζηλωτὴς (Zealot), καὶ (and) Ἰούδας (Judas son) Ἰακώβου (of James). ¹⁴ οὗτοι (These) πάντες (all) ἦσαν (were) προσκαρτεροῦντες (steadfastly continuing) ὁμοθυμαδὸν (with one accord) τῇ (-) προσευχῇ (in prayer), σὺν (with the) γυναιξὶν (women), καὶ (and) Μαριὰμ (Mary) τῇ (the) μητρὶ (mother) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus), καὶ (and) σὺν (with) τοῖς (the) ἀδελφοῖς (brothers) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

²⁰ Οὐ (Not) περὶ (for) τούτων (these) δὲ (however) ἐρωτῶ (do I ask) μόνον (only), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) περὶ (for) τῶν (those) πιστευόντων (believing) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) λόγου (word) αὐτῶν (of them) εἰς (in) ἐμέ (Me), ²¹ ἵνα (that) πάντες (all) ἓν (one) ὦσιν (may be), καθὼς (as) σύ (You), πάτερ* (Father), ἐν (are in) ἐμοὶ (Me), κἀγὼ (and I) ἐν (in) σοί (You), ἵνα (that) καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (they) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (Us) ὦσιν (may be), ἵνα (that) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) πιστεύῃ (may believe) ὅτι (that) σύ (You) με (Me) ἀπέστειλας (sent).

¹ Καί (And) τινες (certain ones) κατελθόντες (having come down) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) Ἰουδαίας (Judea) ἐδίδασκον (were teaching) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers) ὅτι (-), “Ἐὰν (If) μὴ (not) περιτμηθῆτε (you are circumcised) τῷ (according to the) ἔθει (custom) τῷ (-) Μωϋσέως (of Moses), οὐ (not) δύνασθε (you are able) σωθῆναι (to be saved).” ² γενομένης (Having been brought about) δὲ (then) στάσεως (commotion) καὶ (and) ζητήσεως (discussion) οὐκ (no) ὀλίγης (small) τῷ (-) Παύλῳ (by Paul) καὶ (and) τῷ (-) Βαρνάβᾳ (Barnabas) πρὸς (with) αὐτοὺς (them), ἔταξαν (they appointed) ἀναβαίνειν (to go up) Παῦλον (Paul) καὶ (and) Βαρνάβαν (Barnabas) καί (and) τινας (certain) ἄλλους (others) ἐξ (out from) αὐτῶν (them), πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) ἀποστόλους (apostles) καὶ (and) πρεσβυτέρους (elders), εἰς (to) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem), περὶ (about) τοῦ (the) ζητήματος (question) τούτου (this). ³ Οἱ (They) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (therefore) προπεμφθέντες (having been sent forward) ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (the) ἐκκλησίας (church) διήρχοντο (were passing through) τήν (-) τε (both) Φοινίκην (Phoenicia) καὶ (and) Σαμάρειαν (Samaria), ἐκδιηγούμενοι (relating in detail) τὴν (the) ἐπιστροφὴν (conversion) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles), καὶ (and) ἐποίουν (they were bringing) χαρὰν (joy) μεγάλην (great) πᾶσιν (to all) τοῖς (the) ἀδελφοῖς (brothers). ⁴ παραγενόμενοι (Having come) δὲ (then) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem), παρεδέχθησαν (they were welcomed) ἀπὸ (by) τῆς (the) ἐκκλησίας (church) καὶ (and) τῶν (the) ἀποστόλων (apostles) καὶ (and) τῶν (the) πρεσβυτέρων (elders). ἀνήγγειλάν (They declared) τε (then) ὅσα (all that) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐποίησεν (had done) μετ’ (with) αὐτῶν (them). ⁵ Ἐξανέστησαν (Rose up) δέ (now) τινες (certain) τῶν (of those) ἀπὸ (of) τῆς (the) αἱρέσεως (sect) τῶν (of the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) πεπιστευκότες (who believed), λέγοντες (saying) ὅτι (-), “Δεῖ (It is necessary) περιτέμνειν (to circumcise) αὐτοὺς (them), παραγγέλλειν (to command them) τε (then) τηρεῖν (to keep) τὸν (the) νόμον (law) Μωϋσέως (of Moses).” ⁶ Συνήχθησάν (Were gathered together) τε (then) οἱ (the) ἀπόστολοι (apostles) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρεσβύτεροι (elders) ἰδεῖν (to see) περὶ (about) τοῦ (the) λόγου (matter) τούτου (this). ⁷ Πολλῆς (Of much) δὲ (now) ζητήσεως (discussion) γενομένης (having taken place), ἀναστὰς (having risen up), Πέτρος (Peter) εἶπεν (said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Ἄνδρες (Men), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ὑμεῖς (you) ἐπίστασθε (know) ὅτι (that) ἀφ’ (from) ἡμερῶν (days) ἀρχαίων (early), ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) ἐξελέξατο (chose) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) διὰ (by) τοῦ (the) στόματός (mouth) μου (of me) ἀκοῦσαι (to hear) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel), καὶ (and) πιστεῦσαι (to believe). ⁸ καὶ (And) ὁ (the) καρδιογνώστης (heart-knowing) Θεὸς (God) ἐμαρτύρησεν (bore witness) αὐτοῖς (to them), δοὺς (having given them) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy), καθὼς (as) καὶ (also) ἡμῖν (to us), ⁹ καὶ (and) οὐθὲν (not one) διέκρινεν (He made distinction) μεταξὺ (between) ἡμῶν (us) τε (also) καὶ (and) αὐτῶν (them), τῇ (by the) πίστει (faith) καθαρίσας (having purified) τὰς (the) καρδίας (hearts) αὐτῶν (of them). ¹⁰ Νῦν (Now) οὖν (therefore), τί (why) πειράζετε (are you testing) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), ἐπιθεῖναι (to put) ζυγὸν (a yoke) ἐπὶ (upon) τὸν (the) τράχηλον (neck) τῶν (of the) μαθητῶν (disciples) ὃν (that) οὔτε (neither) οἱ (the) πατέρες (fathers) ἡμῶν (of us), οὔτε (nor) ἡμεῖς (we), ἰσχύσαμεν (have been able) βαστάσαι (to bear)? ¹¹ ἀλλὰ (But) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) χάριτος (grace) τοῦ (of) Κυρίου (the Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), πιστεύομεν (we believe) σωθῆναι (to be saved), καθ’ (in) ὃν (the same) τρόπον (manner as) κἀκεῖνοι (they also).” ¹² Ἐσίγησεν (Kept silent) δὲ (now) πᾶν (all) τὸ (the) πλῆθος (multitude), καὶ (and) ἤκουον (were listening to) Βαρνάβα (Barnabas) καὶ (and) Παύλου (Paul) ἐξηγουμένων (relating) ὅσα (what) ἐποίησεν (had done) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), σημεῖα (signs) καὶ (and) τέρατα (wonders), ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) δι’ (by) αὐτῶν (them). ¹³ Μετὰ (After) δὲ (now) τὸ (-) σιγῆσαι (were silent) αὐτοὺς (they), ἀπεκρίθη (answered) Ἰάκωβος (James), λέγων (saying), “Ἄνδρες (Men), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ἀκούσατέ (hear) μου (me). ¹⁴ Συμεὼν (Simeon) ἐξηγήσατο (has related) καθὼς (how) πρῶτον (first) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐπεσκέψατο (visited), λαβεῖν (to take) ἐξ (out of) ἐθνῶν (the Gentiles) λαὸν (a people) τῷ (for the) ὀνόματι (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ¹⁵ καὶ (And) τούτῳ (with this) συμφωνοῦσιν (agree) οἱ (the) λόγοι (words) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (prophets), καθὼς (as) γέγραπται (it is written): ¹⁶ ‘Μετὰ (After) ταῦτα (these things) ἀναστρέψω (I will return) καὶ (and) ἀνοικοδομήσω (will rebuild) τὴν (the) σκηνὴν (tabernacle) Δαυὶδ (of David) τὴν (which) πεπτωκυῖαν (has fallen), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) κατεσκαμμένα* (ruins) αὐτῆς (of it) ἀνοικοδομήσω (I will rebuild), καὶ (and) ἀνορθώσω (I will set upright) αὐτήν (it), ¹⁷ ὅπως (so that) ἂν (-) ἐκζητήσωσιν (may seek out) οἱ (the) κατάλοιποι (remnant) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord), καὶ (and) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles), ἐφ’ (upon) οὓς (whom) ἐπικέκληται (has been called) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) μου (of Me) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτούς (them), λέγει (says) Κύριος (the Lord), ποιῶν (doing) ταῦτα (these things), ¹⁸ γνωστὰ (known) ἀπ’ (from) αἰῶνος (eternity).’ ¹⁹ Διὸ (Therefore) ἐγὼ (I) κρίνω (judge) μὴ (not) παρενοχλεῖν (to trouble) τοῖς (those who), ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles), ἐπιστρέφουσιν (are turning) ἐπὶ (to) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), ²⁰ ἀλλὰ (but) ἐπιστεῖλαι (to write) αὐτοῖς (to them) τοῦ (-) ἀπέχεσθαι (to abstain from) τῶν (the) ἀλισγημάτων (pollutions) τῶν (of the) εἰδώλων (idols), καὶ (and) τῆς (-) πορνείας (sexual immorality), καὶ (and) ‹τοῦ› (that) πνικτοῦ (which is strangled), καὶ (and) τοῦ (from) αἵματος (blood). ²¹ Μωϋσῆς (Moses) γὰρ (for) ἐκ (from) γενεῶν (generations) ἀρχαίων (of old), κατὰ (in every) πόλιν (city) τοὺς (ones) κηρύσσοντας (proclaiming) αὐτὸν (him) ἔχει (has), ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues) κατὰ (on) πᾶν (every) σάββατον (Sabbath) ἀναγινωσκόμενος (being read).” ²² Τότε (Then) ἔδοξε (it seemed good) τοῖς (to the) ἀποστόλοις (apostles) καὶ (and) τοῖς (to the) πρεσβυτέροις (elders), σὺν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) ἐκκλησίᾳ (church), ἐκλεξαμένους (having chosen) ἄνδρας (men) ἐξ (out from) αὐτῶν (them), πέμψαι (to send) εἰς (to) Ἀντιόχειαν (Antioch) σὺν (with) τῷ (-) Παύλῳ (Paul) καὶ (and) Βαρνάβᾳ (Barnabas): Ἰούδαν (Judas) τὸν (-) καλούμενον (called) Βαρσαββᾶν (Barsabbas), καὶ (and) Σιλᾶν (Silas), ἄνδρας (men) ἡγουμένους (leading) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) ἀδελφοῖς (brothers), ²³ γράψαντες (having written) διὰ (by) χειρὸς (the hand) αὐτῶν (of them): “Οἱ (The) ἀπόστολοι (apostles) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρεσβύτεροι (elders), ἀδελφοὶ (brothers), Τοῖς (To those) κατὰ (in) τὴν (-) Ἀντιόχειαν (Antioch) καὶ (and) Συρίαν (Syria) καὶ (and) Κιλικίαν (Cilicia), ἀδελφοῖς (brothers) τοῖς (-) ἐξ (among) ἐθνῶν (the Gentiles): Χαίρειν (Greetings). ²⁴ Ἐπειδὴ (Inasmuch as) ἠκούσαμεν (we have heard) ὅτι (that) τινὲς (some) ἐξ (from) ἡμῶν (us) ‹ἐξελθόντες› (went out) ἐτάραξαν (troubled) ὑμᾶς (you) λόγοις (by words), ἀνασκευάζοντες (upsetting) τὰς (the) ψυχὰς (minds) ὑμῶν (of you), οἷς (to whom) οὐ (not) διεστειλάμεθα (we had given instructions), ²⁵ ἔδοξεν (it seemed good) ἡμῖν (to us) γενομένοις (having come) ὁμοθυμαδὸν (with one accord), ἐκλεξαμένοις* (having chosen) ἄνδρας (men), πέμψαι (to send) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you), σὺν (with) τοῖς (the) ἀγαπητοῖς (beloved) ἡμῶν (of us), Βαρνάβᾳ (Barnabas) καὶ (and) Παύλῳ (Paul), ²⁶ ἀνθρώποις (men) παραδεδωκόσι (having handed over) τὰς (the) ψυχὰς (lives) αὐτῶν (of them) ὑπὲρ (for) τοῦ (the) ὀνόματος (name) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ). ²⁷ ἀπεστάλκαμεν (We have sent) οὖν (therefore) Ἰούδαν (Judas) καὶ (and) Σιλᾶν (Silas), καὶ (and) αὐτοὺς (they) διὰ (by) λόγου (word of mouth) ἀπαγγέλλοντας (are telling you) τὰ (the) αὐτά (same things). ²⁸ Ἔδοξεν (It seemed good) γὰρ (for) τῷ (to the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) τῷ (-) Ἁγίῳ (Holy) καὶ (and) ἡμῖν (to us), μηδὲν (no) πλέον (further) ἐπιτίθεσθαι (to lay) ὑμῖν (upon you) βάρος (burden), πλὴν (except) τούτων (these) τῶν (-) ἐπάναγκες (necessary things): ²⁹ ἀπέχεσθαι (to abstain) εἰδωλοθύτων (from things sacrificed to idols), καὶ (and) αἵματος (from blood), καὶ (and) πνικτῶν (from what is strangled), καὶ (and) πορνείας (from sexual immorality). ἐξ (From) ὧν (these) διατηροῦντες (keeping) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves), εὖ (well) πράξετε (you will do). Ἔρρωσθε (Farewell).” ³⁰ Οἱ (They) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (therefore), ἀπολυθέντες (having been sent off), κατῆλθον (went) εἰς (to) Ἀντιόχειαν (Antioch), καὶ (and) συναγαγόντες (having gathered) τὸ (the) πλῆθος (multitude), ἐπέδωκαν (they delivered) τὴν (the) ἐπιστολήν (letter). ³¹ ἀναγνόντες (Having read it) δὲ (now), ἐχάρησαν (they rejoiced) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) παρακλήσει (encouragement). ³² Ἰούδας (Judas) τε (both) καὶ (and) Σιλᾶς (Silas), καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (themselves) προφῆται (prophets) ὄντες (being), διὰ (by) λόγου (talk) πολλοῦ (much) παρεκάλεσαν (exhorted) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers) καὶ (and) ἐπεστήριξαν (strengthened them). ³³ ποιήσαντες (Having continued) δὲ (then) χρόνον (a time), ἀπελύθησαν (they were sent away) μετ’ (in) εἰρήνης (peace) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ἀδελφῶν (brothers) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (those) ἀποστείλαντας (having sent) αὐτούς (them). ^{34 35} Παῦλος (Paul) δὲ (however) καὶ (and) Βαρνάβας (Barnabas) διέτριβον (stayed) ἐν (in) Ἀντιοχείᾳ (Antioch), διδάσκοντες (teaching) καὶ (and) εὐαγγελιζόμενοι (proclaiming the good news), μετὰ (with) καὶ (also) ἑτέρων (others) πολλῶν (many), τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord). ³⁶ Μετὰ (After) δέ (now) τινας (some) ἡμέρας (days), εἶπεν (said) πρὸς (to) Βαρνάβαν (Barnabas), Παῦλος (Paul), “Ἐπιστρέψαντες (Having turned back) δὴ (indeed) ἐπισκεψώμεθα (let us look after) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers) κατὰ (in) πόλιν (city) πᾶσαν (every) ἐν (in) αἷς (which) κατηγγείλαμεν (we have announced) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord), πῶς (how) ἔχουσιν (they are).” ³⁷ Βαρνάβας (Barnabas) δὲ (now) ἐβούλετο (purposed) συμπαραλαβεῖν (to take along) καὶ (also) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John) τὸν (-) καλούμενον (called) Μάρκον (Mark); ³⁸ Παῦλος (Paul) δὲ (however) ἠξίου (thought fit), τὸν (the one) ἀποστάντα (having withdrawn) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτῶν (them) ἀπὸ (from) Παμφυλίας (Pamphylia) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) συνελθόντα (having gone with) αὐτοῖς (them) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) ἔργον (work), μὴ (not) συμπαραλαμβάνειν (to take along) τοῦτον (him). ³⁹ Ἐγένετο (Arose) δὲ (therefore) παροξυσμός (a sharp disagreement), ὥστε (so that) ἀποχωρισθῆναι (separated) αὐτοὺς (they) ἀπ’ (from) ἀλλήλων (one another); τόν (-) τε (and) Βαρνάβαν (Barnabas), παραλαβόντα (having taken) τὸν (-) Μάρκον (Mark), ἐκπλεῦσαι (sailed) εἰς (to) Κύπρον (Cyprus). ⁴⁰ Παῦλος (Paul) δὲ (however), ἐπιλεξάμενος (having chosen) Σιλᾶν (Silas), ἐξῆλθεν (went forth), παραδοθεὶς (having been committed) τῇ (to the) χάριτι (grace) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (the) ἀδελφῶν (brothers). ⁴¹ διήρχετο (He was passing through) δὲ (then) τὴν (-) Συρίαν (Syria) καὶ (and) ‹τὴν› (-) Κιλικίαν (Cilicia), ἐπιστηρίζων (strengthening) τὰς (the) ἐκκλησίας (churches).

(which) προεπηγγείλατο (He promised beforehand) διὰ (through) τῶν (the) προφητῶν (prophets) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) γραφαῖς (the Scriptures) ἁγίαις (Holy), ³ περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τοῦ (-) γενομένου (having come) ἐκ (of the) σπέρματος (seed) Δαυὶδ (of David) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh), ⁴ τοῦ (-) ὁρισθέντος (having been declared) Υἱοῦ (Son) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) δυνάμει (power) κατὰ (according to the) πνεῦμα (Spirit) ἁγιωσύνης (of holiness) ἐξ (by) ἀναστάσεως (resurrection) νεκρῶν (from the dead), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us); ⁵ δι’ (through) οὗ (whom) ἐλάβομεν (we have received) χάριν (grace) καὶ (and) ἀποστολὴν (apostleship) εἰς (unto) ὑπακοὴν (obedience) πίστεως (of faith) ἐν (among) πᾶσιν (all) τοῖς (the) (To all) τοῖς (those) οὖσιν (being) ἐν (in) Ῥώμῃ (Rome), ἀγαπητοῖς (beloved) Θεοῦ (of God), κλητοῖς (called) ἁγίοις (saints): Χάρις (Grace) ὑμῖν (to you) καὶ (and) εἰρήνη (peace) ἀπὸ (from) Θεοῦ (God) Πατρὸς (the Father) ἡμῶν (of us) καὶ (and) Κυρίου (the Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ). ⁸ Πρῶτον (First) μὲν (indeed), εὐχαριστῶ (I thank) τῷ (the) Θεῷ (God) μου (of me) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ μάρτυς (Witness) γάρ (for) μού (my) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), ᾧ (whom) λατρεύω (I serve) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) πνεύματί (spirit) μου (of me) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) εὐαγγελίῳ (gospel) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ὡς (how) ἀδιαλείπτως (unceasingly) μνείαν (mention) ὑμῶν (of you) ποιοῦμαι (I make), ¹⁰ πάντοτε (always) ἐπὶ (upon) τῶν (the) προσευχῶν (prayers) μου (of me) δεόμενος (imploring), εἴ (if) πως (perhaps) ἤδη (now) ποτὲ (at last) εὐοδωθήσομαι (I will make a prosperous journey) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) θελήματι (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἐλθεῖν (to come) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you). ¹¹ ἐπιποθῶ (I long) γὰρ (for) ἰδεῖν (to see) ὑμᾶς (you), ἵνα (that) τι (some) μεταδῶ (I may impart) χάρισμα (gift) ὑμῖν (to you) πνευματικὸν (spiritual), εἰς (to) τὸ (the) στηριχθῆναι (strengthening) ὑμᾶς (of you), ¹² τοῦτο (that) δέ (now) ἐστιν (is), συμπαρακληθῆναι (to be encouraged together) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), διὰ (through) τῆς (the) ἐν (among) ἀλλήλοις (one another) πίστεως (faith) ὑμῶν (of you) τε (both) καὶ (and) ἐμοῦ (of me). ¹³ Οὐ (Not) θέλω (I do want) δὲ (now) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀγνοεῖν (to be ignorant), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ὅτι (that) πολλάκις (many times) προεθέμην (I purposed) ἐλθεῖν (to come) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) ἐκωλύθην (was hindered), ἄχρι (until) τοῦ (the) δεῦρο (present), ἵνα (that) τινὰ (some) καρπὸν (fruit) σχῶ (I might have) καὶ (also) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), καθὼς (as) καὶ (even) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) λοιποῖς (other) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles). ¹⁴ Ἕλλησίν (To Greeks) τε (both) καὶ (and) Βαρβάροις (to barbarians), σοφοῖς (to the wise) τε (both) καὶ (and) ἀνοήτοις (the foolish), ὀφειλέτης (a debtor) εἰμί (I am). ¹⁵ οὕτως (Thus) τὸ (-) κατ’ (as to) ἐμὲ (me there is) πρόθυμον (readiness) καὶ (also) ὑμῖν (to you) τοῖς (who are) ἐν (in) Ῥώμῃ (Rome), εὐαγγελίσασθαι (to preach the gospel). ¹⁶ Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἐπαισχύνομαι (I am ashamed of) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel), δύναμις (the power) γὰρ (for) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐστιν (it is), εἰς (unto) σωτηρίαν (salvation) παντὶ (to everyone) τῷ (-) πιστεύοντι (believing)— Ἰουδαίῳ (to Jewish) τε (both) πρῶτον (first) καὶ (and) Ἕλληνι (to Greek). ¹⁷ δικαιοσύνη (The righteousness) γὰρ (for) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (it) ἀποκαλύπτεται (is revealed), ἐκ (from) πίστεως (faith) εἰς (to) πίστιν (faith), καθὼς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) δίκαιος (the righteous) ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith) ζήσεται (will live).” ¹⁸ Ἀποκαλύπτεται (Is revealed) γὰρ (for) ὀργὴ (the wrath) Θεοῦ (of God) ἀπ’ (from) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) ἐπὶ (upon) πᾶσαν (all) ἀσέβειαν (ungodliness) καὶ (and) ἀδικίαν (unrighteousness) ἀνθρώπων (of men), τῶν (-) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth) ἐν (by) ἀδικίᾳ (unrighteousness) κατεχόντων (suppressing), ¹⁹ διότι (because) τὸ (the) γνωστὸν (known) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) φανερόν (manifest) ἐστιν (is) ἐν (among) αὐτοῖς (them), ὁ (-) θεὸς (God) γὰρ (for) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἐφανέρωσεν (has revealed it). ²⁰ τὰ (The) γὰρ (for) ἀόρατα (invisible qualities) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἀπὸ (from) κτίσεως (the creation) κόσμου (of the world), τοῖς (by the) ποιήμασιν (things made) νοούμενα (being understood), καθορᾶται (are clearly seen), ἥ (the) τε (both) ἀΐδιος (eternal) αὐτοῦ (of Him) δύναμις (power) καὶ (and) θειότης (divinity), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) εἶναι (to be) αὐτοὺς (them) ἀναπολογήτους (without excuse). ²¹ Διότι (For) γνόντες (having known) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), οὐχ (not) ὡς (as) Θεὸν (God) ἐδόξασαν (they glorified Him), ἢ (or) ηὐχαρίστησαν (were thankful), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐματαιώθησαν (they became futile) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) διαλογισμοῖς (thinking) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) ἐσκοτίσθη (was darkened) ἡ (the) ἀσύνετος (foolish) αὐτῶν (of them) καρδία (heart). ²² φάσκοντες (Professing) εἶναι (to be) σοφοὶ (wise), ἐμωράνθησαν (they became fools), ²³ καὶ (and) ἤλλαξαν (they changed) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τοῦ (of the) ἀφθάρτου (immortal) Θεοῦ (God) ἐν (into) ὁμοιώματι (a likeness) εἰκόνος (of an image) φθαρτοῦ (of mortal) ἀνθρώπου (man) καὶ (and) πετεινῶν (birds) καὶ (and) τετραπόδων (quadrupeds) καὶ (and) ἑρπετῶν (creeping things). ²⁴ Διὸ (Therefore) παρέδωκεν (gave up) αὐτοὺς (them) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires) τῶν (of the) καρδιῶν (hearts) αὐτῶν (of them) εἰς (to) ἀκαθαρσίαν (impurity) τοῦ (-) ἀτιμάζεσθαι (to dishonor) τὰ (the) σώματα (bodies) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐν (between) αὐτοῖς (themselves), ²⁵ οἵτινες (who) μετήλλαξαν (changed) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (into) τῷ (the) ψεύδει (falsehood), καὶ (and) ἐσεβάσθησαν (reverenced) καὶ (and) ἐλάτρευσαν (served) τῇ (the) κτίσει (created thing) παρὰ (beyond) τὸν (the One) Κτίσαντα (having created it), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) εὐλογητὸς (blessed) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages)! ἀμήν (Amen). ²⁶ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) παρέδωκεν (gave up) αὐτοὺς (them) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) εἰς (to) πάθη (passions) ἀτιμίας (of dishonor). αἵ (-) τε (Even) γὰρ (for) θήλειαι (females) αὐτῶν (of them) μετήλλαξαν (changed) τὴν (the) φυσικὴν (natural) χρῆσιν (use) εἰς (into) τὴν (that) παρὰ (contrary to) φύσιν (nature). ²⁷ ὁμοίως (Likewise) τε (then) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) ἄρσενες (males), ἀφέντες (having left) τὴν (the) φυσικὴν (natural) χρῆσιν (use) τῆς (of the) θηλείας (female), ἐξεκαύθησαν (were inflamed) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ὀρέξει (desire) αὐτῶν (of them) εἰς (toward) ἀλλήλους (one another), ἄρσενες (males) ἐν (with) ἄρσεσιν (males), τὴν (the) ἀσχημοσύνην (shame) κατεργαζόμενοι (working out), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ἀντιμισθίαν (recompense) ἣν (which) ἔδει (was fitting) τῆς (of the) πλάνης (error) αὐτῶν (of them), ἐν (in) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves) ἀπολαμβάνοντες (receiving). ²⁸ Καὶ (And) καθὼς (as) οὐκ (not) ἐδοκίμασαν (they did see fit) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἔχειν (to have) ἐν (in their) ἐπιγνώσει (knowledge), παρέδωκεν (gave up) αὐτοὺς (them) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) εἰς (to) ἀδόκιμον (a depraved) νοῦν (mind), ποιεῖν (to do) τὰ (things) μὴ (not) καθήκοντα (being proper); ²⁹ πεπληρωμένους (being filled with) πάσῃ (all) ἀδικίᾳ (unrighteousness), πονηρίᾳ (wickedness), πλεονεξίᾳ (covetousness), κακίᾳ (malice); μεστοὺς (full) φθόνου (of envy), φόνου (murder), ἔριδος (strife), δόλου (deceit), κακοηθείας (maliciousness); ψιθυριστάς (gossips), ³⁰ καταλάλους (slanderers), θεοστυγεῖς (hateful to God), ὑβριστάς (insolent), ὑπερηφάνους (arrogant), ἀλαζόνας (boastful); ἐφευρετὰς (inventors) κακῶν (of evil things), γονεῦσιν (to parents) ἀπειθεῖς (disobedient); ³¹ ἀσυνέτους (foolish), ἀσυνθέτους (untrustworthy), ἀστόργους (heartless), ἀνελεήμονας (unmerciful); ³² οἵτινες (who) τὸ (the) δικαίωμα (righteous decree) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐπιγνόντες (having known), ὅτι (that) οἱ (those) τὰ (such) τοιαῦτα (things) πράσσοντες (doing), ἄξιοι (worthy) θανάτου (of death) εἰσίν (are), οὐ (not) μόνον (only) αὐτὰ (them) ποιοῦσιν (are practicing), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) συνευδοκοῦσιν (are approving of) τοῖς (those) πράσσουσιν (practicing them).

⁴⁰ πάντα (All things) δὲ (however) εὐσχημόνως (properly) καὶ (and) κατὰ (with) τάξιν (order) γινέσθω (let be done).

³ σπουδάζοντες (being diligent) τηρεῖν (to keep) τὴν (the) ἑνότητα (unity) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) συνδέσμῳ (bond) τῆς (-) εἰρήνης (of peace);

¹ Εἴ (If there is) τις (any) οὖν (therefore) παράκλησις (encouragement) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ), εἴ (if) τι (any) παραμύθιον (comfort) ἀγάπης (of love), εἴ (if) τις (any) κοινωνία (fellowship) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit), εἴ (if) τις (any) σπλάγχνα (affections) καὶ (and) οἰκτιρμοί (compassions), ² πληρώσατέ (fulfill) μου (my) τὴν (-) χαρὰν (joy) ἵνα (so that) τὸ (the) αὐτὸ (same) φρονῆτε (you may be minded), τὴν (the) αὐτὴν (same) ἀγάπην (love) ἔχοντες (having), σύμψυχοι (united in soul), τὸ (the) ἓν (same thing) φρονοῦντες (minding), ³ μηδὲν (nothing) κατ’ (according to) ἐριθείαν (self-interest) μηδὲ (or) κατὰ (according to) κενοδοξίαν (vain conceit), ἀλλὰ (but) τῇ (-) ταπεινοφροσύνῃ (in humility) ἀλλήλους (one another) ἡγούμενοι (be esteeming) ὑπερέχοντας (surpassing) ἑαυτῶν (themselves), ⁴ μὴ (not) τὰ (the things) ἑαυτῶν (of themselves) ἕκαστοι (each) σκοποῦντες (considering), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) τὰ (the things) ἑτέρων (of others) ἕκαστοι (each). ⁵ Τοῦτο (This) φρονεῖτε (let mind be) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) ὃ (which) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus was): ⁶ Ὃς (Who) ἐν (in) μορφῇ (the form) Θεοῦ (of God) ὑπάρχων (existing), οὐχ (not) ἁρπαγμὸν (something to be grasped) ἡγήσατο (considered) τὸ (-) εἶναι (to be) ἴσα (equal) Θεῷ (with God), ⁷ ἀλλὰ (but) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ἐκένωσεν (emptied), μορφὴν (the form) δούλου (of a servant) λαβών (having taken), ἐν (in) ὁμοιώματι (the likeness) ἀνθρώπων (of men) γενόμενος (having been made). ⁸ καὶ (And) σχήματι (in appearance) εὑρεθεὶς (having been found) ὡς (as) ἄνθρωπος (a man), ἐταπείνωσεν (He humbled) ἑαυτὸν (Himself), γενόμενος (having become) ὑπήκοος (obedient) μέχρι (unto) θανάτου (death), θανάτου (the death) δὲ (even) σταυροῦ (of the cross). ⁹ Διὸ (Therefore) καὶ (also) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) αὐτὸν (Him) ὑπερύψωσεν (highly exalted), καὶ (and) ἐχαρίσατο (granted) αὐτῷ (to Him) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) τὸ (-) ὑπὲρ (above) πᾶν (every) ὄνομα (name), ¹⁰ ἵνα (that) ἐν (at) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) πᾶν (every) γόνυ (knee) κάμψῃ (should bow), ἐπουρανίων (in the heavens) καὶ (and) ἐπιγείων (on earth) καὶ (and) καταχθονίων (under the earth), ¹¹ καὶ (and) πᾶσα (every) γλῶσσα (tongue) ἐξομολογήσηται (should confess) ὅτι (that) ΚΥΡΙΟΣ (is Lord) ΙΗΣΟΥΣ (Jesus) ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ (Christ), εἰς (to) δόξαν (the glory) Θεοῦ (of God) Πατρός (the Father). ¹² Ὥστε (Therefore), ἀγαπητοί (beloved) μου (of me), καθὼς (just as) πάντοτε (always) ὑπηκούσατε (you have obeyed), μὴ (not) ὡς (as) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) παρουσίᾳ (presence) μου (of me) μόνον (only), ἀλλὰ (but) νῦν (now) πολλῷ (much) μᾶλλον (more) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀπουσίᾳ (absence) μου (of me), μετὰ (with) φόβου (fear) καὶ (and) τρόμου (trembling) τὴν (-) ἑαυτῶν (your own) σωτηρίαν (salvation) κατεργάζεσθε (work out). ¹³ Θεὸς (God) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the One) ἐνεργῶν (working) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) καὶ (both) τὸ (-) θέλειν (to will) καὶ (and) τὸ (-) ἐνεργεῖν (to work) ὑπὲρ (according to) τῆς (His) εὐδοκίας (good pleasure). ¹⁴ Πάντα (All things) ποιεῖτε (do) χωρὶς (without) γογγυσμῶν (murmurings) καὶ (and) διαλογισμῶν (disputings), ¹⁵ ἵνα (so that) γένησθε (you may be) ἄμεμπτοι (blameless) καὶ (and) ἀκέραιοι (innocent), τέκνα (children) Θεοῦ (of God), ἄμωμα (unblemished) μέσον (in the midst) γενεᾶς (of a generation) σκολιᾶς (crooked) καὶ (and) διεστραμμένης (perverted), ἐν (among) οἷς (whom) φαίνεσθε (you shine) ὡς (as) φωστῆρες (lights) ἐν (in) κόσμῳ (the world), ¹⁶ λόγον (the word) ζωῆς (of life) ἐπέχοντες (holding forth), εἰς (unto) καύχημα (a boast) ἐμοὶ (to me) εἰς (in) ἡμέραν (the day) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) εἰς (in) κενὸν (vain) ἔδραμον (I did run) οὐδὲ (nor) εἰς (in) κενὸν (vain) ἐκοπίασα (toil). ¹⁷ Ἀλλὰ (But) εἰ (if) καὶ (even) σπένδομαι (I am being poured out as a drink offering) ἐπὶ (on) τῇ (the) θυσίᾳ (sacrifice) καὶ (and) λειτουργίᾳ (service) τῆς (of the) πίστεως (faith) ὑμῶν (of you), χαίρω (I am glad) καὶ (and) συνχαίρω (rejoice with) πᾶσιν (all) ὑμῖν (you). ¹⁸ τὸ (-) δὲ (And) αὐτὸ (likewise) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) χαίρετε (be glad) καὶ (and) συνχαίρετέ (rejoice with) μοι (me). ¹⁹ Ἐλπίζω (I hope) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), Τιμόθεον (Timothy) ταχέως (soon) πέμψαι (to send) ὑμῖν (to you), ἵνα (that) κἀγὼ (I also) εὐψυχῶ (may be encouraged), γνοὺς (having known) τὰ (the things) περὶ (concerning) ὑμῶν (you). ²⁰ οὐδένα (No one) γὰρ (for) ἔχω (I have) ἰσόψυχον (like-minded), ὅστις (who) γνησίως (genuinely) τὰ (the things) περὶ (relative to) ὑμῶν (you) μεριμνήσει (will care for). ²¹ οἱ (Those) πάντες (all) γὰρ (for) τὰ (the things) ἑαυτῶν (of themselves) ζητοῦσιν (are seeking), οὐ (not) τὰ (the things) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus). ²² τὴν (-) δὲ (But) δοκιμὴν (the proven worth) αὐτοῦ (of him) γινώσκετε (you know), ὅτι (that) ὡς (as) πατρὶ (a father with) τέκνον (a child), σὺν (with) ἐμοὶ (me) ἐδούλευσεν (he has served) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel). ²³ Τοῦτον (Him) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (therefore) ἐλπίζω (I hope) πέμψαι (to send), ὡς (when) ἂν (-) ἀφίδω (I shall have seen) τὰ (the things) περὶ (concerning) ἐμὲ (me), ἐξαυτῆς (immediately). ²⁴ πέποιθα (I am persuaded) δὲ (now) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord) ὅτι (that) καὶ (also) αὐτὸς (I myself) ταχέως (soon) ἐλεύσομαι (I will come). ²⁵ Ἀναγκαῖον (Necessary) δὲ (now) ἡγησάμην (I esteemed it), Ἐπαφρόδιτον (Epaphroditus), τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) καὶ (and) συνεργὸν (fellow worker) καὶ (and) συστρατιώτην (fellow soldier) μου (of me), ὑμῶν (of you) δὲ (now) ἀπόστολον (messenger) καὶ (and) λειτουργὸν (minister) τῆς (of the) χρείας (need) μου (of me), πέμψαι (to send) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you), ²⁶ ἐπειδὴ (since) ἐπιποθῶν (longing after) ἦν (he was) πάντας (all) ὑμᾶς (you) καὶ (and) ἀδημονῶν (being deeply distressed) διότι (because) ἠκούσατε (you heard) ὅτι (that) ἠσθένησεν (he was ill). ²⁷ καὶ (And) γὰρ (indeed) ἠσθένησεν (he was sick) παραπλήσιον (nearly) θανάτῳ (unto death), ἀλλὰ (but) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἠλέησεν (had mercy on) αὐτόν (him); οὐκ (not) αὐτὸν (on him) δὲ (now) μόνον (alone), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) ἐμέ (on me), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) λύπην (sorrow) ἐπὶ (upon) λύπην (sorrow) σχῶ (I should have). ²⁸ Σπουδαιοτέρως (All the more speedily) οὖν (therefore) ἔπεμψα (I have sent) αὐτὸν (him), ἵνα (that) ἰδόντες (having seen) αὐτὸν (him) πάλιν (again), χαρῆτε (you may rejoice), κἀγὼ (and I) ἀλυπότερος (less anxious) ὦ (might be). ²⁹ προσδέχεσθε (Receive) οὖν (therefore) αὐτὸν (him) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord) μετὰ (with) πάσης (all) χαρᾶς (joy), καὶ (and) τοὺς (-) τοιούτους (such) ἐντίμους (in honor) ἔχετε (hold), ³⁰ ὅτι (because) διὰ (for the sake of) τὸ (the) ἔργον (work) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), μέχρι (unto) θανάτου (death) ἤγγισεν (he came near), παραβολευσάμενος (having disregarded) τῇ (his) ψυχῇ (life) ἵνα (so that) ἀναπληρώσῃ (he might fill up) τὸ (the) ὑμῶν (of you) ὑστέρημα (deficit) τῆς (of) πρός (toward) με (me) λειτουργίας (service).
