¹ Περὶ (Concerning) δὲ (now) τῶν (the) χρόνων (times) καὶ (and) τῶν (the) καιρῶν (seasons), ἀδελφοί (brothers), οὐ (no) χρείαν (need) ἔχετε (you have) ὑμῖν (to you) γράφεσθαι (to be written). ² αὐτοὶ (Yourselves) γὰρ (for) ἀκριβῶς (fully) οἴδατε (you know) ὅτι (that) ἡμέρα (the day) Κυρίου (of the Lord), ὡς (as) κλέπτης (a thief) ἐν (by) νυκτὶ (night), οὕτως (in this manner) ἔρχεται (comes). ³ ὅταν (For when) λέγωσιν (they might say), “Εἰρήνη (Peace) καὶ (and) ἀσφάλεια (security),” τότε (then) αἰφνίδιος (suddenly) αὐτοῖς (upon them) ἐφίσταται* (comes) ὄλεθρος (destruction), ὥσπερ (as) ἡ (the) ὠδὶν (labor pains) τῇ (to her) ἐν (in) γαστρὶ (womb) ἐχούσῃ (having); καὶ (and) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἐκφύγωσιν (shall they escape). ⁴ Ὑμεῖς (You) δέ (however), ἀδελφοί (brothers), οὐκ (not) ἐστὲ (are) ἐν (in) σκότει (darkness), ἵνα (that) ἡ (the) ἡμέρα (day) ὑμᾶς (you) ὡς (like) κλέπτης (a thief) καταλάβῃ (should overtake). ⁵ πάντες (All) γὰρ (for) ὑμεῖς (you), υἱοὶ (sons) φωτός (of light) ἐστε (are), καὶ (and) υἱοὶ (sons) ἡμέρας (of day). Οὐκ (Not) ἐσμὲν (we are) νυκτὸς (of night) οὐδὲ (nor) σκότους (of darkness). ⁶ ἄρα (So) οὖν (then) μὴ (not) καθεύδωμεν (we should sleep) ὡς (as) οἱ (the) λοιποί (others), ἀλλὰ (but) γρηγορῶμεν (we should watch) καὶ (and) νήφωμεν (we should be sober). ⁷ οἱ (Those) γὰρ (for) καθεύδοντες (sleeping), νυκτὸς (by night) καθεύδουσιν (sleep); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) μεθυσκόμενοι (becoming drunk), νυκτὸς (by night) μεθύουσιν (get drunk). ⁸ ἡμεῖς (We) δὲ (however), ἡμέρας (of the day) ὄντες (being), νήφωμεν (should be sober), ἐνδυσάμενοι (having put on) θώρακα (the breastplate) πίστεως (of faith) καὶ (and) ἀγάπης (love), καὶ (and) περικεφαλαίαν (the helmet) ἐλπίδα (the hope) σωτηρίας (of salvation), ⁹ ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἔθετο (has destined) ἡμᾶς (us) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) εἰς (for) ὀργὴν (wrath), ἀλλὰ (but) εἰς (for) περιποίησιν (obtaining) σωτηρίας (salvation) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ¹⁰ τοῦ (the One) ἀποθανόντος (having died) περὶ (for) ἡμῶν (us), ἵνα (so that) εἴτε (whether) γρηγορῶμεν (we might watch) εἴτε (or) καθεύδωμεν (we might sleep), ἅμα (together) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him) ζήσωμεν (we may live). ¹¹ Διὸ (Therefore) παρακαλεῖτε (encourage) ἀλλήλους (one another) καὶ (and) οἰκοδομεῖτε (build up) εἷς (one) τὸν (-) ἕνα (another), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) ποιεῖτε (you are doing).

¹¹ Περὶ (Concerning) οὗ (this) πολὺς (there is much) ἡμῖν (from us) ὁ (-) λόγος (speech), καὶ (and) δυσερμήνευτος (difficult in interpretation) λέγειν (to speak), ἐπεὶ (since) νωθροὶ (sluggish) γεγόνατε (you have become) ταῖς (in the) ἀκοαῖς (hearings). ¹² καὶ (Even) γὰρ (for) ὀφείλοντες (you ought) εἶναι (to be) διδάσκαλοι (teachers) διὰ (by) τὸν (the) χρόνον (time), πάλιν (again) χρείαν (need of) ἔχετε (you have) τοῦ (one) διδάσκειν (to teach) ὑμᾶς (you) τινα (what is) τὰ (the) στοιχεῖα (principles) τῆς (of the) ἀρχῆς (beginning) τῶν (of the) λογίων (oracles) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); καὶ (and) γεγόνατε (you have become) χρείαν (need) ἔχοντες (those having) γάλακτος (of milk), [καὶ] (and) οὐ (not) στερεᾶς (of solid) τροφῆς (food).

¹⁷ ὃς (Whoever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) ἔχῃ (might have) τὸν (the) βίον (goods) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world), καὶ (and) θεωρῇ (might see) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) χρείαν (need) ἔχοντα (having), καὶ (and) κλείσῃ (might close up) τὰ (the) σπλάγχνα (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him), πῶς (how) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μένει (abides) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him)? ¹⁸ Τεκνία (Little children), μὴ (not) ἀγαπῶμεν (we should love) λόγῳ (in word), μηδὲ (nor) τῇ (in) γλώσσῃ (tongue), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐν (in) ἔργῳ (action) καὶ (and) ἀληθείᾳ (in truth).

⁶ χωρὶς (Without) δὲ (now) πίστεως (faith), ἀδύνατον (it is impossible) εὐαρεστῆσαι (to please Him). πιστεῦσαι (To believe) γὰρ (for) δεῖ (it behooves) τὸν (the one) προσερχόμενον (drawing near) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), ὅτι (that) ἔστιν (He exists), καὶ (and that) τοῖς (to those) ἐκζητοῦσιν (earnestly seeking out) αὐτὸν (Him), μισθαποδότης (a rewarder) γίνεται (He becomes).

³⁸ γρηγορεῖτε (Watch) καὶ (and) προσεύχεσθε (pray), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ἔλθητε (you may enter) εἰς (into) πειρασμόν (temptation). τὸ (The) μὲν (indeed) πνεῦμα (spirit) πρόθυμον (is willing), ἡ (-) δὲ (but) σὰρξ (the flesh) ἀσθενής (weak).” ³⁹ Καὶ (And) πάλιν (again) ἀπελθὼν (having gone away), προσηύξατο (He prayed), τὸν (the) αὐτὸν (same) λόγον (thing) εἰπών (having said). ⁴⁰ καὶ (And) πάλιν (again) ἐλθὼν (having returned), εὗρεν (he found) αὐτοὺς (them) καθεύδοντας (sleeping). ἦσαν (Were) γὰρ (for) αὐτῶν (of them) οἱ (the) ὀφθαλμοὶ (eyes) καταβαρυνόμενοι (heavy); καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ᾔδεισαν (they knew) τί (what) ἀποκριθῶσιν (they should answer) αὐτῷ (Him). ⁴¹ Καὶ (And) ἔρχεται (He comes) τὸ (the) τρίτον (third time), καὶ (and) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Καθεύδετε (Are you sleeping) τὸ (-) λοιπὸν (still) καὶ (and) ἀναπαύεσθε (taking your rest). ἀπέχει (It is enough); ἦλθεν (has come) ἡ (the) ὥρα (hour); ἰδοὺ (behold), παραδίδοται (is delivered up) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) εἰς (into) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) τῶν (of the) ἁμαρτωλῶν (sinful).

³⁹ Ἐραυνᾶτε (You diligently search) τὰς (the) γραφάς (Scriptures), ὅτι (for) ὑμεῖς (you) δοκεῖτε (think) ἐν (in) αὐταῖς (them) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal) ἔχειν (to have); καὶ (and) ἐκεῖναί (these) εἰσιν (are they) αἱ (-) μαρτυροῦσαι (bearing witness) περὶ (concerning) ἐμοῦ (Me); ⁴⁰ καὶ (and) οὐ (not) θέλετε (you are willing) ἐλθεῖν (to come) πρός (to) με (Me) ἵνα (that) ζωὴν (life) ἔχητε (you may have).

¹⁷ εἰδότι (To him knowing) οὖν (therefore) καλὸν (good) ποιεῖν (to do), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ποιοῦντι (doing), ἁμαρτία (sin) αὐτῷ (to him) ἐστιν (it is).

⁹ Ἡ (Let) ἀγάπη (love be) ἀνυπόκριτος (unfeigned): ἀποστυγοῦντες (abhorring) τὸ (-) πονηρόν (evil), κολλώμενοι (cleaving to) τῷ (-) ἀγαθῷ (good), ¹⁰ τῇ (-) φιλαδελφίᾳ (in brotherly love) εἰς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another) φιλόστοργοι (devoted) τῇ (-) τιμῇ (in honor), ἀλλήλους (one another) προηγούμενοι (esteeming), ¹¹ τῇ (-) σπουδῇ (in diligence) μὴ (not) ὀκνηροί (lagging), τῷ (-) πνεύματι (in spirit) ζέοντες (being fervent), τῷ (the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) δουλεύοντες (serving), ¹² τῇ (-) ἐλπίδι (in hope) χαίροντες (rejoicing), τῇ (-) θλίψει (in tribulation) ὑπομένοντες (being patient), τῇ (-) προσευχῇ (in prayer) προσκαρτεροῦντες (being constant), ¹³ ταῖς (to the) χρείαις (needs) τῶν (of the) ἁγίων (saints) κοινωνοῦντες (contributing), τὴν (-) φιλοξενίαν (hospitality) διώκοντες (pursuing).

¹⁶ ἐξαγοραζόμενοι (redeeming) τὸν (the) καιρόν (time), ὅτι (because) αἱ (the) ἡμέραι (days) πονηραί (evil) εἰσιν (are).

¹⁵ Οἶδά (I know) σου (your) τὰ (-) ἔργα (works), ὅτι (that) οὔτε (neither) ψυχρὸς (cold) εἶ (you are) οὔτε (nor) ζεστός (hot). ὄφελον (I wish) ψυχρὸς (cold) ἦς (you would be) ἢ (or) ζεστός (hot). ¹⁶ οὕτως (So) ὅτι (because) χλιαρὸς (lukewarm) εἶ (you are), καὶ (and) οὔτε (neither) ζεστὸς (hot) οὔτε (nor) ψυχρός (cold), μέλλω (I am about) σε (you) ἐμέσαι (to spit) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματός (mouth) μου (of Me).

¹⁰ Τοῦ (-) λοιποῦ (Henceforth) ἐνδυναμοῦσθε (be empowered) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κράτει (strength) τῆς (of the) ἰσχύος (might) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ¹¹ ἐνδύσασθε (Put on) τὴν (the) πανοπλίαν (complete armor) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), πρὸς (for) τὸ (-) δύνασθαι (to be able) ὑμᾶς (you) στῆναι (to stand) πρὸς (against) τὰς (the) μεθοδείας (schemes) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil), ¹² ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἡμῖν (to us) ἡ (the) πάλη (wrestling) πρὸς (against) αἷμα (blood) καὶ (and) σάρκα (flesh), ἀλλὰ (but) πρὸς (against) τὰς (the) ἀρχάς (rulers), πρὸς (against) τὰς (the) ἐξουσίας (authorities), πρὸς (against) τοὺς (the) κοσμοκράτορας (cosmic powers) τοῦ (of the) σκότους (darkness) τούτου (this), πρὸς (against) τὰ (the) πνευματικὰ (spiritual forces) τῆς (-) πονηρίας (of evil) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἐπουρανίοις (heavenly realms).

³ Ἔσται (There will be) γὰρ (for) καιρὸς (a time) ὅτε (when) τῆς (-) ὑγιαινούσης (sound) διδασκαλίας (teaching) οὐκ (not) ἀνέξονται (they will endure), ἀλλὰ (but) κατὰ (according to) τὰς (the) ἰδίας (own) ἐπιθυμίας (desires), ἑαυτοῖς (to themselves) ἐπισωρεύσουσιν (they will gather around them) διδασκάλους (teachers), κνηθόμενοι (having an itching) τὴν (-) ἀκοήν (ear), ⁴ καὶ (and) ἀπὸ (from) μὲν (indeed) τῆς (the) ἀληθείας (truth) τὴν (-) ἀκοὴν (hearing), ἀποστρέψουσιν (they will turn away); ἐπὶ (unto) δὲ (then) τοὺς (-) μύθους (myths) ἐκτραπήσονται (they will be turned aside).

² γίνου (Be) γρηγορῶν (watching), καὶ (and) στήρισον (strengthen) τὰ (the things) λοιπὰ (that remain), ἃ (which) ἔμελλον (are about) ἀποθανεῖν (to die); οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) εὕρηκά (I have found) σου (your) ‹τὰ› (-) ἔργα (works) πεπληρωμένα (having been completed) ἐνώπιον (in the sight of) τοῦ (the) Θεοῦ (God) μου (of Me).

¹¹ τῇ (-) σπουδῇ (in diligence) μὴ (not) ὀκνηροί (lagging), τῷ (-) πνεύματι (in spirit) ζέοντες (being fervent), τῷ (the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) δουλεύοντες (serving),

¹⁶ οὕτως (So) ὅτι (because) χλιαρὸς (lukewarm) εἶ (you are), καὶ (and) οὔτε (neither) ζεστὸς (hot) οὔτε (nor) ψυχρός (cold), μέλλω (I am about) σε (you) ἐμέσαι (to spit) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματός (mouth) μου (of Me).
