⁴³ You have heard that it was said: You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy. ⁴⁴ But I say to you, Love your enemies: bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who insult you and persecute you: ⁴⁵ that you may be the sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun to rise upon the evil and the good, and causes it to rain on the just and on the unjust.

¹⁹ Now the works of the flesh are well known, and they are these lewdness, uncleanness, wantonness, ²⁰ idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strifes, jealousies, anger, party-spirit, divisions, sects, ²¹ envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; with respect to which, I tell you now, as I also told you in times past, that those who practice such things shall riot inherit the kingdom of God.

¹ Whence come wars and strifes among you? Come they not hence, even of your passions, which war in your members? ² You desire, and you have not; you kill, and are earnestly desirous of having, and yet you can not obtain; you fight and war, and yet you have not, because you ask not. ³ You ask, and receive not, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your passions. ⁴ Adulterers and adulteresses, know you not that the friend ship of the world is enmity to God? Whoever, therefore, will be a friend of the world, is an enemy of God. ⁵ Do you suppose that the scripture speaks to no purpose? Does the Spirit that dwells in us incline to envy? No. ⁶ But he gives more grace. "Wherefore he says: God sets himself against the proud, but gives grace to the lowly. ⁷ Submit yourselves, therefore, to God; resist the devil, and he will flee from you; ⁸ draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded men. ⁹ Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to sorrow. ¹⁰ Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you. ¹¹ Do not speak evil one of another, brethren. He that speaks evil of his brother, and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law, and judges the law: but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law, but a judge. ¹² There is one law-giver that is able to save, and to destroy: who are you that judge an other? ¹³ Come, now, you that say, Let us go to-day, or to-morrow, into this city, and remain there a year, and trade, and make gain; ¹⁴ and yet you know not what will take place to-morrow. For what is your life? Is it not, indeed, a vapor, that appears for a little while, and then vanishes away? ¹⁵ Instead of that, you ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. ¹⁶ But now you glory in your boastings: all such glorying is evil. ¹⁷ Therefore, to him that knows how to do good, and does it not, to him it is sin.

²⁷ But I say to you that hear: Love your enemies; do good to them that hate you; ²⁸ bless them that curse you; pray for them that abuse you. ²⁹ To him that strikes you on one cheek, offer also the other; and from him that takes away your mantle, withhold not your coat. ³⁰ Give to every one that asks of you; and of him that takes away your goods, ask them not again. ³¹ And as you would that men should do to you, do you also in like manner to them. ³² And if you love them that love you, what thanks have you? for even sinners love those who love them. ³³ And if you do good to them that do good to you, what thanks have you? for even sinners do the same. ³⁴ And if you lend to them from whom you hope to receive, what thanks have you? for even sinners lend to sinners, that they may receive the same. ³⁵ But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward shall be great, and you shall be sons of the Most High: for he is kind to the unthankful and the evil. ³⁶ Be you, therefore, merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

¹⁸ If the world hates you, you know that it hated me before it hated you.

¹¹ He that hates his brother is in darkness, and walks in darkness; and he knows not whither he goes, because darkness has blinded his eyes.

⁴⁴ But I say to you, Love your enemies: bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who insult you and persecute you:

¹⁵ But if you forgive not men their offenses, neither will your Father forgive your offenses.

⁹ He that says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness till now.

²⁰ If any man say, I love God, and yet hate his brother, he is a liar: for he that loves not his brother, whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?
