¹⁸ Chasten thy son, seeing there is hope;
And set not thy heart on his destruction.

⁸ My son, hear the instruction of thy father,
And forsake not the law of thy mother: ⁹ For they shall be a chaplet of grace unto thy head,
And chains about thy neck.

³ neither as lording it over the charge allotted to you, but making yourselves ensamples to the flock.

⁷ It is for chastening that ye endure; God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is there whom [his] father chasteneth not? ⁸ But if ye are without chastening, whereof all have been made partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. ⁹ Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? ¹⁰ For they indeed for a few days chastened [us] as seemed good to them; but he for [our] profit, that [we] may be partakers of his holiness. ¹¹ All chastening seemeth for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yieldeth peaceable fruit unto them that have been exercised thereby, [even the fruit] of righteousness.

⁶ And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be upon thy heart; ⁷ and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. ⁸ And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thy hand, and they shall be for frontlets between thine eyes. ⁹ And thou shalt write them upon the door-posts of thy house, and upon thy gates.

¹³ Withhold not correction from the child;
[For] if thou beat him with the rod, he will not die.

¹⁷ Correct thy son, and he will give thee rest;
Yea, he will give delight unto thy soul.

³ Lo, children are a heritage of Jehovah;
[And] the fruit of the womb is [his] reward.

¹⁵ The rod and reproof give wisdom;
But a child left to himself causeth shame to his mother.

⁷ in all things showing thyself an ensample of good works; in thy doctrine [showing] uncorruptness, gravity,

²⁴ He that spareth his rod hateth his son;
But he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

²¹ Fathers, provoke not your children, that they be not discouraged.

²⁰ And those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, did Joshua set up in Gilgal. ²¹ And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones? ²² then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land. ²³ For Jehovah your God dried up the waters of the Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as Jehovah your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were passed over; ²⁴ that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of Jehovah, that it is mighty; that ye may fear Jehovah your God for ever.

⁶ Train up a child in the way he should go,
And even when he is old he will not depart from it.

⁴ And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but nurture them in the chastening and admonition of the Lord.
