Bible verses about "traditions" | ABU

Matthew 15:3-20

3 And he answering said to them: Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God, for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God commanded, saying: Honor thy father and mother; and he that curses father or mother, let him surely die. 5 But ye say: Whoever says to his father or his mother, It is a gift, whatever thou mightest be profited with from me, 6 shall not honor his father or his mother; and ye made the word of God of no effect, for the sake of your tradition. 7 Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying: 8 This people honor me with their lips, But their heart is far from me. 9 But in vain they worship me, Teaching as doctrines commandments of men. 10 And calling to him the multitude, he said to them: Hear, and understand: 11 Not that which enters into the mouth defiles the man; but that which comes out of the mouth, this defiles the man. 12 Then came to him his disciples, and said to him: Knowest thou that the Pharisees, when they heard the saying, were offended? 13 And he answering said: Every plant, which my heavenly Father planted not, shall be rooted up. 14 Let them alone; they are blind leaders of the blind; and if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into the ditch. 15 And Peter answering said to him: Explain to us this parable. 16 And he said: Are ye also even yet without understanding? 17 Do ye not yet understand, that whatever enters into the mouth goes into the belly, and is cast out into the drain? 18 But the things that proceed out of the mouth come forth out of the heart; and they defile the man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false-witnessings, blasphemies. 20 These are the things that defile the man; but to eat with unwashen hands defiles not the man.

Matthew 15:2-6

2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they wash not their hands when they eat bread.

And there are many other things which they received to hold, immersions of cups, and pots, and brazen vessels, and couches. 5 And the Pharisees and the scribes ask him: Why do not thy disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with defiled hands? 6 And he said to them: Well did Isaiah prophesy concerning you hypocrites; as it is written: This people honor me with their lips, But their heart is far from me. 7 But in vain they worship me, Teaching as doctrines commandments of men. 8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, immersions of pots and cups; and many other such things ye do. 9 And he said to them: Well do ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition!
