¹⁶ Ye shall know them from their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles? ¹⁷ So every good tree brings forth good fruit; but the corrupt tree brings forth evil fruit. ¹⁸ A good tree can not bring forth evil fruit, nor a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. ¹⁹ Every tree that brings not forth good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire. ²⁰ So then, from their fruits ye shall know them.

²⁶ But the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things which I said to you.

¹² I have yet many things to say to you, but ye can not bear them now. ¹³ But when he, the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak from himself, but whatever he shall hear, that will he speak, and he will tell you the things to come.

¹⁹ And this is the witness of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him: Who art thou? ²⁰ And he confessed, and denied not; and he confessed: I am not the Christ. ²¹ And they asked him: What then? Art thou Elijah? And he says: I am not. Art thou the Prophet? And he answered: No. ²² They said therefore to him: Who art thou? that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? ²³ He said: I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord, as said Isaiah the prophet. ²⁴ And they who were sent were of the Pharisees. ²⁵ And they asked him, and said to him: Why then dost thou immerse, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?

¹ BUT there were false prophets also among the people, as there will be false teachers among you also, who stealthily will bring in destructive factions, even denying as Master him who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. ² And many will follow their dissolute ways; by reason of whom the way of truth will be evil spoken of. ³ And in covetousness will they with feigned words make merchandise of you; for whom the judgment from of old lingers not, and their destruction slumbers not.

⁴ And Jesus answering said to them: Take heed, lest any one lead you astray. ⁵ For many will come in my name, saying: I am the Christ; and will lead astray many.
