1 Samuel 20 And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said at the face of Jonathan, What have I done? what is my perversity? and what is my sin at the face of thy father, that he seeketh my life?

1 H1732 And David H1272 [H8799] fled H5121 from Naioth H7414 in Ramah, H935 [H8799] and came H559 [H8799] and said H6440 at the face of H3083 Jonathan, H6213 [H8804] What have I done? H5771 what is my perversity? H2403 and what is my sin H6440 at the face of H1 thy father, H1245 [H8764] that he seeketh H5315 my life?

2 H559 [H8799] And he said H2486 to him, Far be it from thee; H4191 [H8799] thou shalt not die: H1 behold, my father H6213 H6213 [H8799] will do H1697 nothing H1419 either great H6996 or small, H1540 H241 [H8799] but that he will show H1 it to me: and why should my father H5641 [H8686] hide H1697 this thing from me? it is not so.

3 H1732 And David H7650 [H8735] swore H559 [H8799] moreover, and said, H1 Thy father H3045 [H8800] certainly H3045 [H8804] knoweth H4672 [H8804] that I have found H2580 grace H5869 in thine eyes; H559 [H8799] and he saith, H3083 Let not Jonathan H3045 [H8799] know H6087 [H8735] this, lest he should be grieved: H199 but truly H3068 as the LORD H2416 liveth, H5315 and as thy breath H2416 liveth, H6587 there is but a step H4194 between me and death.

4 H559 [H8799] Then said H3083 Jonathan H1732 to David, H5315 Whatever thy breath H559 [H8799] desireth, H6213 [H8799] I will even do it for thee.

5 H1732 And David H559 [H8799] said H3083 to Jonathan, H4279 Behold, to morrow H2320 is the new moon, H3427 [H8800] and I should not fail H3427 [H8799] to sit H4428 with the king H398 [H8800] at the table: H7971 [H8765] but let me go, H5641 [H8738] that I may hide H7704 myself in the field H7992 to the third H6153 day at evening.

6 H1 If thy father H6485 [H8800] shall at all H6485 [H8799] miss H559 [H8804] me, then say, H1732 David H7592 [H8736] earnestly H7592 [H8738] asked H7323 [H8800] leave of me that he might run H1035 to Bethlehem H5892 his city: H3117 for there is a yearly H2077 sacrifice H4940 there for all the family.

7 H559 [H8799] If he shall say H2896 thus, It is well; H5650 thy servant H7965 shall have peace: H2734 [H8800] but if he shall be very H2734 [H8799] angry, H3045 [H8798] then be sure H7451 that evil H3615 [H8804] is determined by him.

8 H6213 [H8804] Therefore thou shalt deal H2617 mercifully H5650 with thy servant; H935 [H8689] for thou hast brought H5650 thy servant H1285 into a testament H3068 of the LORD H3426 with thee: however, if there is H5771 in me perversity, H4191 [H8685] slay H935 [H8686] me thyself; for why shouldest thou bring H1 me to thy father?

9 H3083 And Jonathan H559 [H8799] said, H2486 Far be it from thee: H3045 [H8799] for if I knew H3045 [H8800] certainly H7451 that evil H3615 [H8804] is determined H1 by my father H935 [H8800] to come H5046 [H8686] upon thee, then would not I tell it thee?

10 H559 [H8799] Then said H1732 David H3083 to Jonathan, H5046 [H8686] Who shall tell H1 me? or what if thy father H6030 [H8799] shall answer H7186 thee roughly?

11 H3083 And Jonathan H559 [H8799] said H1732 to David, H3212 [H8798] Come, H3318 [H8799] and let us go out H7704 into the field. H3318 [H8799] And they went out H8147 both H7704 of them into the field.

12 H3083 And Jonathan H559 [H8799] said H1732 to David, H3068 O LORD H430 God H3478 of Israel, H2713 [H8799] when I have sounded H1 my father H4279 about to morrow H6256 any time, H7992 or the third H2895 [H8804] day, and, behold, if there be good H1732 toward David, H7971 [H8799] and I then send H1540 H241 [H8804] not to thee, and show it thee;

13 H3068 The LORD H6213 [H8799] do H3541 so H3254 [H8686] and much more H3083 to Jonathan: H3190 [H8686] but if it shall please H1 my father H7451 to do thee evil, H1540 H241 [H8804] then I will show H7971 [H8765] it to thee, and send thee away, H1980 [H8804] that thou mayest go H7965 in peace: H3068 and the LORD H1 be with thee, as he hath been with my father.

14 H518 And thou shalt not only while yet H2416 I live H6213 [H8799] show H2617 me the mercy H3068 of the LORD, H4191 [H8799] that I may not die:

15 H3772 [H8686] But also thou shalt not withdraw H2617 thy mercy H1004 from my house H5704 for H5769 ever: H3068 no, not when the LORD H3772 [H8687] hath cut off H341 [H8802] the enemies H1732 of David H376 every one H6440 from the face H127 of the soil.

16 H3083 So Jonathan H3772 [H8799] made H1004 a covenant with the house H1732 of David, H3068 saying, Let the LORD H1245 [H8765] even require H3027 it at the hand H1732 of David's H341 [H8802] enemies.

17 H3083 And Jonathan H1732 caused David H7650 [H8687] to swear H3254 [H8686] again, H160 because he loved H157 [H8804] him: for he loved H160 him as he loved H5315 his own breath.

18 H3083 Then Jonathan H559 [H8799] said H1732 to David, H4279 To morrow H2320 is the new moon: H6485 [H8738] and thou shalt be missed, H4186 because thy seat H6485 [H8735] will be empty.

19 H8027 [H8765] And when thou hast stayed three days, H3381 [H8799] then thou shalt go down H3966 quickly, H935 [H8804] and come H4725 to the place H5641 [H8738] where thou didst hide H3117 thyself when H4639 the business H3427 [H8804] was in hand, and shalt remain H681 by H68 the stone H237 Ezel.

20 H3384 [H8686] And I will shoot H7969 three H2671 arrows H6654 on the side H7971 [H8763] of it, as though I shot H4307 at a mark.

21 H7971 [H8799] And, behold, I will send H5288 a lad, H3212 [H8798] saying, Go, H4672 [H8798] find H2671 the arrows. H559 [H8800] If I expressly H559 [H8799] say H5288 to the lad, H2671 Behold, the arrows H3947 [H8798] are on this side of thee, take H935 [H8798] them; then come H7965 thou: for there is peace H1697 to thee, and no hurt; H3068 as the LORD H2416 liveth.

22 H559 [H8799] But if I say H5958 thus to the young man, H2671 Behold, the arrows H1973 are beyond H3212 [H8798] thee; go thy way: H3068 for the LORD H7971 [H8765] hath sent thee away.

23 H1697 And as to the matter H1696 [H8765] which thou and I have spoken H3068 of, behold, the LORD H5704 be between thee and me for H5769 ever.

24 H1732 So David H5641 [H8735] hid H7704 himself in the field: H2320 and when the new moon H4428 had come, the king H3427 [H8799] sat down H398 [H8800] to eat H3899 food.

25 H4428 And the king H3427 [H8799] sat H4186 upon his seat, H6471 as at other times, H4186 even upon a seat H7023 by the wall: H3083 and Jonathan H6965 [H8799] arose, H74 and Abner H3427 [H8799] sat H7586 by Saul's H6654 side, H1732 and David's H4725 place H6485 [H8735] was empty.

26 H7586 Nevertheless Saul H1696 [H8765] spoke H3972 not any thing H3117 that day: H559 [H8804] for he thought, H4745 Something hath befallen H1115 him, he is not H2889 clean; H2889 surely he is not clean.

27 H4283 And it came to pass on the next day, H8145 which was the second H2320 day of the month, H1732 that David's H4725 place H6485 [H8735] was empty: H7586 and Saul H559 [H8799] said H3083 to Jonathan H1121 his son, H935 [H8804] Why cometh H1121 not the son H3448 of Jesse H3899 to eat, H8543 neither yesterday, H3117 nor to day?

28 H3083 And Jonathan H6030 [H8799] answered H7586 Saul, H1732 David H7592 [H8736] earnestly H7592 [H8738] asked H5978 leave of me H1035 to go to Bethlehem:

29 H559 [H8799] And he said, H7971 [H8761] Let me go, H4940 I pray thee; for our family H2077 hath a sacrifice H5892 in the city; H251 and my brother, H6680 [H8765] he hath commanded H4672 [H8804] me to be there: and now, if I have found H2580 favour H5869 in thine eyes, H4422 [H8735] let me get away, H7200 [H8799] I pray thee, and see H251 my brethren. H935 [H8804] Therefore he cometh H4428 not to the king's H7979 table.

30 H7586 Then Saul's H639 anger H2734 [H8799] was kindled H3083 against Jonathan, H559 [H8799] and he said H1121 to him, Thou son H5753 [H8737] of the perverse H4780 rebellious H3045 [H8804] woman, do not I know H977 [H8802] that thou hast chosen H1121 the son H3448 of Jesse H1322 to thy own shame, H1322 and to the shame H517 of thy mother's H6172 nakedness?

31 H3588 For H3605 all H9009 the H3117 days H834 that H1121 the son H3448 of Jesse H2425 [H8804] liveth H5921 upon H9009 the H127 soil, H859 thou H9002 and H9021 thy H4438 kingdom H3808 shalt not H3559 [H8735] be established. H9002 Therefore H6258 now H7971 [H8798] send H9001 and H3947 [H8798] bring H9033 him H413 to H9030 me, H3588 for H1931 he H1121 is a son H4194 of death.

32 H3083 And Jonathan H6030 [H8799] answered H7586 Saul H1 his father, H559 [H8799] and said H4191 [H8714] to him, Why shall he be slain? H6213 [H8804] what hath he done?

33 H7586 And Saul H2904 [H8686] cast H2595 a javelin H5221 [H8687] at him to smite H3083 him: by which Jonathan H3045 [H8799] knew H3617 that it was determined H1 by his father H4191 [H8687] to slay H1732 David.

34 H3083 So Jonathan H6965 [H8799] arose H7979 from the table H2750 in burning H639 anger, H398 [H8804] and ate H3899 no food H8145 the second H3117 day H2320 of the month: H6087 [H8738] for he was grieved H1732 for David, H1 because his father H3637 [H8689] had done him shame.

35 H1242 And it came to pass in the morning, H3083 that Jonathan H3318 [H8799] went out H7704 into the field H4150 at the time appointed H1732 with David, H6996 and a little H5288 lad with him.

36 H559 [H8799] And he said H5288 to his lad, H7323 [H8798] Run, H4672 [H8798] find H2671 now the arrows H3384 [H8688] which I shoot. H5288 And as the lad H7323 [H8801] ran, H3384 [H8804] he shot H2678 an arrow H5674 [H8687] beyond him.

37 H5288 And when the lad H935 [H8799] had come H4725 to the place H2678 of the arrow H3083 which Jonathan H3384 [H8804] had shot, H3083 Jonathan H7121 [H8799] called H310 after H5288 the lad, H559 [H8799] and said, H2678 Is not the arrow H1973 beyond thee?

38 H3083 And Jonathan H7121 [H8799] called H310 after H5288 the lad, H4120 Make speed, H2363 [H8798] haste, H5975 [H8799] stay H3083 not. And Jonathan's H5288 lad H3950 [H8762] gathered up H2671 H2678 [H8675] the arrows, H935 [H8799] and came H113 to his master.

39 H5288 But the lad H3045 [H8804] knew H3972 not any thing: H3083 only Jonathan H1732 and David H3045 [H8804] knew H1697 the matter.

40 H3083 And Jonathan H5414 [H8799] gave H3627 his weapons H5288 to his lad, H559 [H8799] and said H3212 [H8798] to him, Go, H935 [H8685] carry H5892 them to the city.

41 H5288 And as soon as the lad H935 [H8802] was gone, H1732 David H6965 [H8804] arose H681 out of a place toward H5045 the south, H5307 [H8799] and fell H639 on his nose H776 to the earth, H7812 [H8691] and bowed H7969 himself three H6471 times: H5401 [H8799] and they kissed H376 one H7453 another, H1058 [H8799] and wept H376 one H7453 with another, H1732 but David H1431 [H8689] more so.

42 H3083 And Jonathan H559 [H8799] said H1732 to David, H3212 [H8798] Go H7965 in peace, H7650 [H8738] forasmuch as we have sworn H8147 both H8034 of us in the name H3068 of the LORD, H559 [H8800] saying, H3068 The LORD H2233 be between me and thee, and between my seed H2233 and thy seed H5704 for H5769 ever. H6965 [H8799] And he arose H3212 [H8799] and departed: H3083 and Jonathan H935 [H8802] went H5892 into the city.
