²⁷ and whoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, is not able to be my disciple.

³⁸ and whoever doth not receive his cross and follow after me, is not worthy of me.

²¹ and he hath not root in himself, but is temporary, and persecution or tribulation having happened because of the word, immediately he is stumbled.

²⁴ Then said Jesus to his disciples, `If any one doth will to come after me, let him disown himself, and take up his cross, and follow me, ²⁵ for whoever may will to save his life, shall lose it, and whoever may lose his life for my sake shall find it, ²⁶ for what is a man profited if he may gain the whole world, but of his life suffer loss? or what shall a man give as an exchange for his life?

³⁴ And having called near the multitude, with his disciples, he said to them, `Whoever doth will to come after me—let him disown himself, and take up his cross, and follow me; ³⁵ for whoever may will to save his life shall lose it; and whoever may lose his life for my sake and for the good news' sake, he shall save it; ³⁶ for what shall it profit a man, if he may gain the whole world, and forfeit his life? ³⁷ Or what shall a man give as an exchange for his life?

²¹ And Jesus having looked upon him, did love him, and said to him, `One thing thou dost lack; go away, whatever thou hast—sell, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven, and come, be following me, having taken up the cross.'

²¹ And they impress a certain one passing by—Simon, a Cyrenian, coming from the field, the father of Alexander and Rufus—that he may bear his cross,
