²⁶ for see your calling, brethren, that not many are wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble;

¹² And I have left in thy midst a people humble and poor, And they have trusted in the name of Jehovah.

²⁵ At that time Jesus answering said, `I do confess to Thee, Father, Lord of the heavens and of the earth, that thou didst hide these things from wise and understanding ones, and didst reveal them to babes. ²⁶ Yes, Father, because so it was good pleasure before Thee.

³ it seemed good also to me, having followed from the first after all things exactly, to write to thee in order, most noble Theophilus,

²¹ In that hour was Jesus glad in the Spirit, and said, `I do confess to thee, Father, Lord of the heaven and of the earth, that Thou didst hide these things from wise men and understanding, and didst reveal them to babes; yes, Father, because so it became good pleasure before Thee.

²⁴ And Jesus having seen him become very sorrowful, said, `How hardly shall those having riches enter into the reign of God! ²⁵ for it is easier for a camel through the eye of a needle to enter, than for a rich man into the reign of God to enter.'

⁴⁶ Jesus came, therefore, again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine, and there was a certain courtier, whose son was ailing in Capernaum, ⁴⁷ he, having heard that Jesus is come out of Judea to Galilee, went away unto him, and was asking him that he may come down and may heal his son, for he was about to die. ⁴⁸ Jesus then said unto him, `If signs and wonders ye may not see, ye will not believe.' <sup>49</sup> The courtier saith unto him, `Sir, come down before my child die;' ⁵⁰ Jesus saith to him, `Be going on; thy son doth live.' And the man believed the word that Jesus said to him, and was going on, <sup>51</sup> and he now going down, his servants met him, and told, saying—`Thy child doth live;' ⁵² he inquired then of them the hour in which he became better, and they said to him—`Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him;' <sup>53</sup> then the father knew that it was in that hour in which Jesus said to him—`Thy son doth live,' and he himself believed, and his whole house;

⁴⁷ The Pharisees, therefore, answered them, `Have ye also been led astray? ⁴⁸ did any one out of the rulers believe in him? or out of the Pharisees? ⁴⁹ but this multitude, that is not knowing the law, is accursed.'

³⁸ And after these things did Joseph of Arimathea—being a disciple of Jesus, but concealed, through the fear of the Jews—ask of Pilate, that he may take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave leave; he came, therefore, and took away the body of Jesus, ³⁹ and Nicodemus also came—who came unto Jesus by night at the first—bearing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, as it were, a hundred pounds.

⁷ who was with the proconsul Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man; this one having called for Barnabas and Saul, did desire to hear the word of God,

¹² then the proconsul having seen what hath come to pass, did believe, being astonished at the teaching of the Lord.

³⁴ and certain men having cleaved to him, did believe, among whom is also Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman, by name Damaris, and others with them.

²⁰ where is the wise? where the scribe? where a disputer of this age? did not God make foolish the wisdom of this world?

³ and I, in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling, was with you; ⁴ and my word and my preaching was not in persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power— ⁵ that your faith may not be in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
⁶ And wisdom we speak among the perfect, and wisdom not of this age, nor of the rulers of this age—of those becoming useless,

⁸ which no one of the rulers of this age did know, for if they had known, the Lord of the glory they would not have crucified;

¹³ which things also we speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Holy Spirit, with spiritual things spiritual things comparing,

¹⁸ Let no one deceive himself; if any one doth seem to be wise among you in this age—let him become a fool, that he may become wise, ¹⁹ for the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God, for it hath been written, `Who is taking the wise in their craftiness;' <sup>20</sup> and again, `The Lord doth know the reasonings of the wise, that they are vain.'

²² there salute you all the saints, and specially those of Caesar's house;

⁹ And let the brother who is low rejoice in his exaltation, ¹⁰ and the rich in his becoming low, because as a flower of grass he shall pass away; ¹¹ for the sun did rise with the burning heat, and did wither the grass, and the flower of it fell, and the grace of its appearance did perish, so also the rich in his way shall fade away!

⁵ Hearken, my brethren beloved, did not God choose the poor of this world, rich in faith, and heirs of the reign that He promised to those loving Him?

¹³ Who is wise and intelligent among you? let him shew out of the good behaviour his works in meekness of wisdom, ¹⁴ and if bitter zeal ye have, and rivalry in your heart, glory not, nor lie against the truth; ¹⁵ this wisdom is not descending from above, but earthly, physical, demon-like, ¹⁶ for where zeal and rivalry are, there is insurrection and every evil matter; ¹⁷ and the wisdom from above, first, indeed, is pure, then peaceable, gentle, easily entreated, full of kindness and good fruits, uncontentious, and unhypocritical: —
