⁶ and happy is the man who shall not be offended at any thing in me.

³ Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ⁴ Blessed are they that mourn; for they shall be comforted. ⁵ Blessed are the meek; for they shall inherit the earth. ⁶ Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be satisfied. ⁷ Blessed are the merciful; for they shall obtain mercy. ⁸ Blessed are the pure in heart; for they shall see God. ⁹ Blessed are the peace-makers; for they shall be called the children of God. ¹⁰ Blessed are they, who are persecuted for righteousness sake; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ¹¹ Blessed are ye when men shall revile and persecute you, and utter all manner of reproach against you falsly, for my sake: ¹² rejoice and be exceeding glad; for great will be your reward in heaven: for so they persecuted the prophets, that were before you.

⁵⁵ Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? ⁵⁶ and his sisters, are they not all here among us? from whence then hath this man all these things? ⁵⁷ So they were prejudiced against Him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is no where less honoured than in his own country, and in his own family.

¹² Whereupon his disciples came and said to Him, Dost thou know that the pharisees, when they heard this assertion, were offended at it? ¹³ But He answered and said, Every plantation which my heavenly Father hath not planted shall be rooted up. ¹⁴ Regard them not; for they are blind guides of the blind: and if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into the ditch.

⁷ Wo will be to the world from such offenses; for it is of necessity that offenses come: but wo to that man by whom the offense cometh.

¹⁰ and then will many take offense, and betray one another, and hate one another: and many false prophets will rise up and deceive many:

³¹ Then saith Jesus unto them, Ye will all take offence at me this night; for it is written, "I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered:"

³⁴ And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother, Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising again of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be spoken against,

²³ And He said unto them, No doubt ye will apply to me this proverb, "Physician, cure thyself, and do here in thy own country what we have heard were done at Capernaum." ²⁴ But, said He, indeed I must tell you, that no prophet is well received in his own country. ²⁵ And I assure you, there were many widows in Israel, in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up for three years and six months, and there was a great famine through all the land; ²⁶ but Elias was sent to none of those widows, but to a widow-woman at Sarepta in the territory of Sidon. ²⁷ There were also many lepers in Israel, in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed; but Naaman the Syrian was. ²⁸ And all the synagogue were filled with rage, when they heard these things, ²⁹ and they rose up and drove Him out of the city, and dragged Him to the brow of the hill, on which their city was built, in order to throw Him down the precipice.

²⁷ As He was speaking these things, a certain woman lifted up her voice from amidst the croud, and said, Happy is the womb that bare thee, and the breasts which thou didst suck! ²⁸ but He replied, Yea rather happy are they, that hear the word of God and keep it.

⁶⁰ Many therefore of his disciples, when they heard Him, said, This discourse is hard to be understood, who can take it in? ⁶¹ But Jesus knowing in Himself, that his disciples were murmuring about it, said unto them, Does this offend you?

⁶⁶ From this time many of his disciples went away, and walked no more with Him.

⁴¹ Others said, This is the Messiah. But some said, Shall the Messiah come out of Galilee? ⁴² Hath not the Scripture said, that Christ cometh of the seed of David, and from Bethlehem, the town whence David was.

³² because they sought it not by faith, but by the works of the law, for they stumbled at that stumbling-stone; ³³ as it is written, "Behold I lay in Sion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence:" and again, "Whosoever believeth on Him shall not be ashamed."

²² And whereas the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks look for wisdom, we preach Christ crucified; ²³ to the Jews indeed a stumbling-block, and to the Greeks foolishness; but to them that are called,

¹⁴ But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

¹¹ And I, brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still persecuted by the Jews? for then the offence of the cross is ceased.

⁸ and a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence. These stumble at the word through unbelief, unto which also they were appointed.
