¹ For this cause I Paul am the prisoner of Jesus Christ for the sake of you Gentiles:

¹² But before all these things they will lay hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to synagogues, and prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake:

³³ Then the commanding officer came near and took him, and ordered him to be bound with two chains; and inquired, who he was, and what he had done.

¹⁸ So he took him and brought him to the tribune, and said, Paul the prisoner called me to him, and desired me to introduce this young man unto thee, as having something to say to thee.

²⁹ And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds.

¹⁷ And after three days Paul called together the chief of the Jews. And when they were come together, he said unto them, Brethren, though I have done nothing against the people of the Jews, or the customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans: ¹⁸ who when they had examined me, would have set me at liberty, because there was no crime worthy of death found in me: ¹⁹ but the Jews opposing it, I was obliged to appeal to Cesar; though not as having any thing to accuse my nation of. ²⁰ For this reason therefore I desired to see and to speak to you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.

¹ Now I Paul myself exhort you, by the meekness and lenity of Christ, who in presence am lowly among you,

²³ so am I: are they ministers of Christ? (if I may speak as a fool) I am more: in labors more abundant, in stripes far exceeding, in prisons more frequently, and often even in deaths.

² Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing.

¹¹ And I, brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still persecuted by the Jews? for then the offence of the cross is ceased.

¹³ Wherefore I desire that ye would not be discouraged at my afflictions on your account, which is your glory.

¹ I therefore, a prisoner for the sake of the Lord, exhort you to walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all humility and meekness;

²⁰ for which I am an ambassador though in chains: that I may speak boldly in behalf of it, as I ought to speak.

⁷ As it is just for me to think this of you all, because ye have me in your heart, both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, being all of you partakers of the same grace with me.

¹³ so that my bonds are manifest in all the palace, and all other places, to be for the sake of Christ; ¹⁴ and many of the brethren in the Lord, encouraged by my bonds, are much more bold to publish the word without fear. ¹⁵ Some indeed through envy and strife, and some also through good-will: ¹⁶ the former preach Christ out of contention, not sincerely, thinking to add affliction to my bonds;

²⁴ Now I rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up what is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh, for the sake of his body, which is the church.

³ Praying at the same time for us also, that God would open to us a door of utterance, to declare the mystery of Christ, for which also I am in bonds: that I may make it manifest, as I ought.

¹⁸ The salutation of me Paul, with my own hand. Remember my bonds. Grace be with you. Amen.

¹⁵ who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; who are displeasing to God, and contrary to all men: ¹⁶ forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, thus going on to fill up their sins perpetually: but wrath is coming upon them to extremity.

⁸ Be not therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but bear thy part in the afflictions of the gospel, according to the power of God;

¹⁶ The Lord shew mercy to the family of Onesiphorus; for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain: but when he was at Rome,

⁹ for whose sake I suffer trouble even unto bonds, as if I were a malefactor; but the word of God is not bound. ¹⁰ Therefore I submit to every thing for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is by Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.

¹ Paul a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy a brother, to Philemon our beloved brother and fellow-laborer, and to the beloved Apphia,

⁹ I would rather intreat thee out of love to me, being such a one as Paul the aged, and now a prisoner too for the sake of Jesus Christ.

²³ Epaphras my fellow-prisoner in Christ Jesus, and Marcus,

¹⁰ Fear none of the things which thou wilt suffer: behold the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall suffer affliction ten days. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
