What, therefore, God joined together, let not man put asunder." ⁷ They say to Him, "Why, then, did Moses command to give her a bill of divorcement, and to put her away?" ⁸ He saith to them, "Moses, in view of the hardness of your heart, permitted you to put away your wives; but from the beginning it has not been so. ⁹ And I say to you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, except for fornication, and shall marry another, commits adultery."

And multitudes come together to Him again; and, as He was wont, He was teaching them again. ² And the Pharisees, corning to Him, were asking Him, "Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife!" tempting Him. ³ And He, answering, said to them, "What did Moses command you?" ⁴ And they said, "Moses permitted to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away." ⁵ But Jesus said to them, "Because of the hardness of your heart he wrote you this commandment. ⁶ But from the beginning of the creation, 'Male and female made He them.' ⁷ For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, [and shall cleave to his wife], ⁸ and the two shall become one flesh; so that they are no more two, but one flesh. ⁹ What, therefore, God joined together, let not man put asunder." ¹⁰ And in the house the disciples asked Him again concerning this. ¹¹ And He saith to them, "Whosoever puts away his wife, and marries another, commits adultery against her; ¹² and, if she herself, having put away her husband, marries another, she commits adultery."

⁴⁰ And He went away again beyond the Jordan unto the place where John was at first immersing; and there He abode.
