⁴⁴ Then He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you, that everything which is written about me in the law of Moses, in the prophets, and in the Psalms, had to be fulfilled."

²¹ It was just after that that Jesus Christ for the first time clearly taught His disciples that He had to go to Jerusalem and submit to many forms of suffering at the hands of the elders, high priests, and scribes, and be killed, but be raised to life on the third day.

²² While they were going about in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be turned over into the hands of men, ²³ and they will kill Him, but on the third day He will be raised again." And they were crushed with grief.

¹⁸ "Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be turned over to the high priests and the scribes, and they will sentence Him to death, ¹⁹ and turn Him over to the heathen to mock and flog and crucify, but on the third day He will rise again."

⁵⁴ How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, for they say this is the way it must be?"

⁵⁶ But this has all taken place so that the writings of the prophets may be fulfilled." Then the disciples all forsook Him and made their escape.

³¹ Then He instructed them for the first time that the Son of Man had to endure great suffering and be disowned by the elders and the high priests and the scribes, and be killed but rise again after three days. ³² And without any reserve He was telling them this fact. So Peter took Him aside and began to reprove Him for it.

³¹ for He was now teaching His disciples, and saying to them, "The Son of Man is to be turned over into men's hands, and they will kill Him, but three days after that He will rise again."

³³ "Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be turned over to the high priests and scribes, and they will sentence Him to death, and will turn Him over to the heathen, ³⁴ and they will make sport of Him, and spit on Him, and flog Him, and kill Him, but three days after He will rise again."

²² as He said, "The Son of Man has to endure great suffering and be disowned by the elders, the high priests, and the scribes, and be put to death but be raised to life on the third day."

⁴⁴ "You must store away in your memories these words, for the Son of Man is going to be turned over to the hands of men!"

³¹ Now He took the Twelve aside and said to them, "Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. ³² For He will be turned over to the heathen and sport made of Him, He will be insulted and spit upon, ³³ and then they will flog Him and kill Him, but on the third day He will rise again." ³⁴ But they did not understand about these things, and this statement was an insoluble riddle to them; they did not even begin to grasp what He meant.

²² for these are the days of vengeance when all that is written in the Scriptures will be fulfilled.

³⁷ For I tell you, what has been written about me must be fulfilled: 'He was classed with the outlaws.' Yes, that saying about me has its fulfillment."

⁶ [He is not here but has risen.] Remember what He told you while He was still in Galilee, when ⁷ He said that the Son of Man had to be turned over to wicked men and crucified, but was to rise again on the third day."

²⁶ Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and thus to enter into His glory?" ²⁷ Then He began with Moses and went through all the prophets and explained to them all the passages in the Scriptures about Himself.

⁴⁶ and said to them, "The Scriptures said that the Christ should suffer as He has suffered, should rise from the dead on the third day,

¹⁴ And just as Moses in the desert lifted the serpent on the pole, the Son of Man must be lifted up,

³⁹ "You keep on searching the Scriptures, for you yourselves suppose that you will get possession of eternal life through them; and yet they are witnesses that testify to me,

⁴⁶ For if you really believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.

⁴ But I have told you these things that when the time does come, you may remember that I told you. I did not tell you these things at the start, because I was with you. ⁵ But now I am going away to Him who has sent me, and not one of you is asking me where I am going,

¹⁶ "In just a little while you will not see me any longer; and yet, in just a little while after you will see me again." ¹⁷ So some of His disciples said to one another, "What does He mean by telling us, 'In just a little while you will not see me, and yet in just a little while after you will see me again,' and 'Because I am going away to the Father'?"

¹¹ And now I am no longer to be in the world, but they are to stay on in the world, while I am going to be with you. Holy Father, keep them by the power which you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are. ¹² As long as I was with them, I kept them by your power which you gave me, and I protected them, and not one of them was lost, except the one who is now doomed to be lost, so that the Scripture might be fulfilled. ¹³ And now I am going to be with you, and I am saying these things while still in the world, that the joy which I experience may be fully experienced in their own souls.

²⁴ So they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but let us draw for it to see who gets it." This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, "They divided my clothes among them, and for my clothing they cast lots." Now this was what the soldiers did. ²⁵ Near Jesus' cross were standing His mother and her sister Mary, the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. ²⁶ So Jesus, on seeing His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing near, said to His mother, "There is your son." ²⁷ Then He said to His disciple, "There is your mother." And from that very hour His disciple took her to his own home. ²⁸ After this, as Jesus knew that everything was now finished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, He said, "I am thirsty." ²⁹ A bowl full of sour wine was sitting there. So they put a sponge soaked in sour wine on a stick and put it to His lips. ³⁰ As soon as Jesus took the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" Then He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. ³¹ As it was the day of Preparation for the Passover, that the bodies might not remain on the crosses during the Sabbath, for that Sabbath was a very important one, the Jews requested Pilate to have their legs broken and their bodies taken down. ³² So the soldiers went and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with Him. ³³ But when they came to Jesus, as they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs, ³⁴ but one of the soldiers thrust a lance into His side and blood and water at once flowed out. ³⁵ The man who saw it has testified to it -- and his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth -- in order that you too may come to believe it. ³⁶ For this took place that this Scripture might be fulfilled, "Not a bone of His will be broken." ³⁷ And again another Scripture says, "They shall look at Him whom they pierced."

¹⁸ But in this way God fulfilled what He by the lips of all the prophets foretold, that the Christ should suffer.

²² Moses, indeed, said: 'The Lord God will raise up a prophet for you from among your brothers, as He did me. You must attentively listen to everything that He tells you. ²³ The result will be, that any person who will not listen to that prophet will be utterly destroyed from among the people.' ²⁴ Yes, all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel down, have also foretold these days.

³⁷ It was this Moses who said to the descendants of Israel, 'God will raise up a prophet for you from among you, just as He did me.'

²⁹ When they had carried out everything that had been written in the Scriptures about Him, they took Him down from the cross and laid Him in a tomb. ³⁰ But God raised Him from the dead, ³¹ and for many days He appeared to those who had come up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, and they are now witnesses for Him to the people.

³³ that God has fulfilled it to us their children, by raising Jesus to life, just as the Scripture says in the Second Psalm, 'You are my Son, today I have become your Father.'

² So Paul, as he usually did, went to the synagogue, and for three sabbaths discussed with them the Scriptures, ³ explaining them and proving that the Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead, and said, "This very Jesus whom I proclaim to you is the Christ."

³ For I passed on to you, among the primary principles of the good news, what I had received, that Christ died for our sins, in accordance with the Scriptures, ⁴ that He was buried, that on the third day He was raised from the dead, in accordance with the Scriptures,

⁵ Now Moses was faithful in all the house of God, yet only as a servant to bear witness to the message that should be spoken,

¹ For this man Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham as he was coming back from the defeat of the kings, and put his blessing on him,

⁸ By this the Holy Spirit was showing that there was as yet no access to the real sanctuary while the outer tent was still in existence,

¹ For since the law cast only a shadow of the blessings to come and did not possess the reality itself of those blessings, the priests with the same sacrifices that are perpetually offered year after year cannot make perfect those who come to worship.

¹¹ earnestly trying to find out the time, and the nature of the times, which the Spirit of the Christ within them pointed to, in foretelling the sufferings of the Christ and the glory that should follow them.

¹⁰ Then I fell before his feet to worship him, but he said to me, "You must take care not to do that. I am only a fellow-slave of yours and of your brothers who hold to the testimony borne by Jesus. Worship God. For the testimony borne by Jesus is the inspiring spirit of prophecy."
