¹ Before the Passover feast started, Jesus knew that His time had come for Him to leave the world and go to the Father, and as He had loved His own in the world He loved them to the last.

² "You know that in two days the Passover Feast will take place, and the Son of Man will be turned over to be crucified." ³ Then the high priests and the elders of the people met in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, ⁴ and plotted to arrest Jesus by stratagem and put Him to death. ⁵ But they kept saying, "It must not be at the feast, for a riot may break out among the people."

⁴⁵ After that He came back to the disciples and said to them: "Still sleeping! Still resting! See! The time has come for the Son of Man to be betrayed into the hands of sinful men!

²⁰ and teach them to practice all the commands that I have given you. And I myself will surely be with you all the days, down to the very close of an age."

¹ Now the feast of the Passover and of Unleavened Bread was two days later. So the high priests and scribes kept looking for some way to arrest Him by stratagem and have Him put to death, ² for they kept saying, "It must not be at the feast, for there might be a riot."

⁵¹ Now as the time was coming to a head when He should be taken up to heaven, He firmly set His face to continue His journey to Jerusalem;

³² But He said to them: "Go and tell that fox, 'Here I am, driving out demons and performing cures, today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will finish these tasks. ³³ But I must continue on my way, for it is not possible for a prophet to perish outside Jerusalem.'

¹ Now the feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was drawing near. ² So the high priests and the scribes continued to seek how they might put Him to death, for they were afraid of the people.

⁵³ While I was among you day after day in the temple, you never laid a hand on me! But this is your opportunity, even the power which darkness gives you!"

⁴ Now the Passover, the Jewish feast, was approaching.

⁶ Then Jesus said to them, "It is not yet time for me to do so, but anytime is suitable for you.

³⁰ Then they kept on trying to arrest Him, and yet no one laid a hand on Him, for the time had not yet come.

²⁰ He said these things in the treasury as He was teaching in the temple, and yet no one ventured to arrest Him, because the time had not yet come for Him.

⁹ Jesus answered, "Does not the day have twelve hours? If a man travels in the daytime, he does not stumble, for he can see the light of this world; ¹⁰ but if he travels in the nighttime, he does stumble, because he has no light."

⁵⁵ Now the Jewish Passover was approaching, and many people from the country went up to Jerusalem, to purify themselves before the Passover.

²³ Jesus answered them, "The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified,

³ because He was sure that the Father had put everything into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going back to God,

³⁴ I give you a new command, to love one another. Just as I have loved you, you too must love one another.

²⁸ You have heard me say that I am going away and coming back to you; if you really loved me, you would rejoice over my telling you that I am going to the Father, because my Father is greater than I.

⁹ I have loved you just as the Father has loved me. You must remain in my love. ¹⁰ If you continue to keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commands and remain in His love.

¹³ No one can show greater love than this, the giving of his life for his friends. ¹⁴ You are my friends, if you keep on doing what I command you to do.

⁵ But now I am going away to Him who has sent me, and not one of you is asking me where I am going, ⁶ but sorrow has taken complete possession of your hearts, because I have told you these things. ⁷ Yet it is nothing but the truth I now tell you, that it is better for you that I should go away. For if I do not go away, the Helper will not come into close fellowship with you, but if I do go away, I will send Him to be in close fellowship with you.

²⁸ I did come from the Father and I have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father."

¹ When Jesus had said all these things, He lifted His eyes to heaven and said: "Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that He may glorify you,

⁵ So now, Father, glorify me up there in your presence just as you did before the world existed.

⁹ I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world now, but only for those whom you have given me, because they are yours -- ¹⁰ really, all that is mine is yours, and all that is yours is mine -- and I have been glorified through them. ¹¹ And now I am no longer to be in the world, but they are to stay on in the world, while I am going to be with you. Holy Father, keep them by the power which you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are.

¹³ And now I am going to be with you, and I am saying these things while still in the world, that the joy which I experience may be fully experienced in their own souls. ¹⁴ I have given them your message, and the world has hated them, because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to it.

¹⁶ They do not belong to the world just as I do not belong to it.

²⁶ and I made known to them your very self, and I will make you known still further, so that the love which you have shown to me may be felt in them, and I in union with them."

⁴ Then Jesus, as He knew everything that was going to befall Him, came forward and asked them, "Who is it that you are looking for?"

³⁷ And yet in all these things we keep on gloriously conquering through Him who loved us.

⁸ and to the very end He will guarantee that you are vindicated at the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

²⁵ You married men must love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her, ²⁶ to consecrate her, after cleansing her through His word, as pictured in the water bath,

⁶ but Christ as a Son set over the house of God was faithful; and we are that house, if we keep up our courage and the joy that hope inspires to the very end.

¹⁴ For we have become real sharers in Christ, if we keep firm to the end the faith we had at first,

¹¹ And we desire each one of you to continue to show the same earnestness to the very end, that you may enjoy your hope to the fullest,

¹³ Therefore, as a means of spiritual preparation, tighten up the belt about your minds, keep perfectly calm, keep your hope on the spiritual blessing to be conferred upon you at the unveiling of Jesus Christ.

¹⁹ We love, because He loved us first.

⁵ and from Jesus Christ the trustworthy witness, the First-born of the dead, and the Sovereign of the kings of the earth. To Him who ever loves us and once for all released us from our sins by His blood,
