James 5:1 Cross References - Williams

¹ Come now, you rich people, weep aloud and howl over the miseries that are sure to overtake you.

²³ Jesus said to His disciples, "I solemnly say to you, it will be hard for a rich man to get into the kingdom of heaven. ²⁴ Again, I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye than for a rich man to get into the kingdom of heaven."

²⁴ But a curse on you who are rich, for you are now receiving your comforts in full. ²⁵ A curse on you who live in luxury now, for you will be hungry. A curse on you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.

¹⁶ Then He told them a story, as follows: "A certain rich man's lands yielded bountifully. ¹⁷ So he began to argue with himself, 'What am I to do, because I have nowhere to store my crops?' ¹⁸ Then he said, 'This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and in them I will store all my grains and my goods. ¹⁹ Then I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Go on taking your ease; continue to eat, drink, and enjoy yourself."' ²⁰ But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your soul is to be demanded of you. Then who will have all that you have prepared?' ²¹ So it is with the man who continues to pile up possessions for himself, and is not rich in God."

¹⁹ "Once there was a rich man who used to dress in purple and fine linen and live in dazzling luxury every day. ²⁰ And a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores, had been laid at his gate, ²¹ and he was always craving to get a square meal from the scraps that fell from the rich man's table. Yes, the very dogs used to come and lick his sores. ²² One day the beggar died and was carried away by the angels to be Abraham's bosom companion, and the rich man too died and was buried. ²³ And in Hades he looked up, in constant tortures as he was, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus his bosom companion. ²⁴ So he called and said, 'Father Abraham, take pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water to cool off my tongue, because I am ceaselessly tortured in this flame.' ²⁵ But Abraham said, 'My child, remember that you received in full your blessings in your lifetime, and Lazarus his hardships in his, but now he is continuously comforted here, while you are continuously tortured there.

²⁸ But Jesus turned to the women and said, "Women of Jerusalem, stop weeping for me, but continue to weep for yourselves and for your children. ²⁹ For a time is coming when people will say, 'Happy are the women who are childless, and the women who have never borne and nursed babies!'

⁹ But men who keep planning to get rich fall into temptations and snares and many foolish, hurtful desires which plunge people into destruction and ruin. ¹⁰ For the love of money is the root of all sorts of evil, and some men in reaching after riches have wandered from the faith and pierced their hearts with many a pang.

¹¹ For the sun comes up with its scorching heat and dries up the grass, and its flowers wither, and its beauty fades away; so will rich men fade away in their pursuits.

⁶ But you, in contrast, have humiliated the poor man. Are not the rich men those who oppress you and drag you to court?

⁹ Be miserable, mourn ... and weep aloud. Let your laughter be turned to grief and your joy to gloom.

¹³ Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we are going to such and such a city and stay a year, go into business and make money,"

¹⁵ The kings of the earth, the great men, the military leaders, the rich, the mighty -- everybody, whether slaves or free hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains. ¹⁶ And they said to the mountains and the rocks: "Fall on us and conceal us from the sight of Him who is seated on the throne, and from the anger of the Lamb, ¹⁷ because the great day of their anger has come, and who can stand it?"
