¹⁷ Continue charging the rich of this world to stop being haughty and not to fix their hope on a thing so uncertain as riches, but on God who richly and ceaselessly provides us with everything for our enjoyment;

³² For the heathen are greedily pursuing all such things; and surely your heavenly Father well knows that you need them all.

²³ Jesus said to His disciples, "I solemnly say to you, it will be hard for a rich man to get into the kingdom of heaven.

⁵⁷ Although it was now evening, a rich man named Joseph, from Arimathea, who was himself a disciple of Jesus,

²⁴ His disciples were startled at this statement. But Jesus again said to them as He continued the topic, "My children, how hard it is to get into the kingdom of God!

¹⁵ And then He said to them, "Be ever on the alert and always on your guard against every form of greed, because a man's life does not consist in his possessions, even though they are abundant." ¹⁶ Then He told them a story, as follows: "A certain rich man's lands yielded bountifully. ¹⁷ So he began to argue with himself, 'What am I to do, because I have nowhere to store my crops?' ¹⁸ Then he said, 'This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and in them I will store all my grains and my goods. ¹⁹ Then I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Go on taking your ease; continue to eat, drink, and enjoy yourself."' ²⁰ But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your soul is to be demanded of you. Then who will have all that you have prepared?' ²¹ So it is with the man who continues to pile up possessions for himself, and is not rich in God."

⁹ Then Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this home, for he too is a real descendant of Abraham. ¹⁰ For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the people that are lost."

¹⁷ though He did not fail to furnish evidences about Himself, in constantly showing His kindness to you, in sending you rain from heaven and fruit-producing seasons, in giving you food and happiness to your heart's content."

²⁷ On arriving there they called the church together, and in detail reported to them all that God had done through them as instruments, and how He had opened to the heathen the door of faith.

²⁵ nor is He served by human hands as though He were in need of anything, for He Himself gives all men life and breath and everything else.

²⁰ Very well, but it was for lack of faith that they were broken off, and it is through your faith that you now stand where you are. Stop your haughty thinking, rather continue to be reverent,

⁵ For you may be absolutely sure that no one who is sexually impure, immoral or greedy for gain (for that is idolatry) can have a part in the kingdom of Christ and God.

¹⁶ Let the message of Christ continue to live in you in all its wealth of wisdom; keep on teaching it to one another and training one another in it with thankfulness, in your hearts singing praise to God with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.

⁹ For the people themselves tell us what a welcome you gave us, and how you turned from idols to the true God, to serve the God who lives on and is real,

³ As I begged you to do when I was on my way to Macedonia, I still beg you to stay on in Ephesus to warn certain teachers

¹⁵ so that, if I am detained, you may know how people ought to conduct themselves in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.

¹⁰ To this end we are toiling and struggling, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Saviour of all mankind, especially of believers.

²¹ I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus and the chosen angels, to carry out these instructions without prejudice and with perfect impartiality.

¹³ Before God who preserves the life of all His creatures and before Christ Jesus who in testifying before Pontius Pilate made His good profession, I solemnly charge you

¹⁰ for Demas has forsaken me because he loved the present world, and has gone to Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia;

¹² training us to give up godless ways and worldly cravings and live serious, upright, and godly lives in this world,

⁶ which He abundantly poured out upon us through Jesus Christ our Saviour,

⁹ Let the poor brother of lowly station rejoice in his exalted station as a Christian, ¹⁰ and the rich brother rejoice in his being on a level with the poor, because the rich will fade away like the flower of the grass.

⁶ Pay her back in her own coin; give her double for what she has done. In the cup that she has mixed, mix twice as much for her. ⁷ To the same degree in which she has lived in splendor and luxury, give her torture and tears.
