¹⁷ Because the time has come for judgment to begin at the household of God, and if it begins with us, what will the end be of those who are rejecting God's good news?

⁹ and do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our forefather? For I tell you, God can raise up descendants for Abraham even out of these stones. ¹⁰ Now the axe is already lying at the roots of the trees. Every tree then that fails to bear good fruit is to be cut down and thrown into the fire.

²⁰ Then He began to censure the cities in which His many, many wonder-works had been done, because they did not repent. ²¹ "A curse on you, Chorazin! A curse on you, Bethsaida! For if the wonder-works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, long ago they would have repented in sackcloth and ashes. ²² Moreover, I tell you, on the day of judgment the punishment will be lighter for Tyre and Sidon than for you! ²³ And you, Capernaum, are you to be exalted to heaven? No, you belong to the regions of the dead! For if the wonder-works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have continued until today. ²⁴ But I tell you, on the day of judgment the punishment will be lighter for the land of Sodom than for you!"

¹² I tell you, on that day the punishment will be lighter for Sodom than for that town. ¹³ A curse on you, Chorazin! A curse on you, Bethsaida! For if the wonder-works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, long ago they would have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. ¹⁴ But at the judgment the punishment will be lighter for Tyre and Sidon than for you.

⁴⁷ That slave who knows his master's wishes and does not get ready or act upon them will be severely punished. ⁴⁸ But the one who does wrong without knowing it will be lightly punished. Much will be demanded from anyone to whom much has been given; yea, people will demand much more from anyone to whom they have entrusted much.

³¹ For if they do this when the wood is green, what will they do when it is dry?"

⁹ to every human soul who practices doing evil, the Jew first and then the Greek.

¹ O senseless Galatians! Who has bewitched you, before whose very eyes Jesus Christ was pictured as the crucified One?

⁷ You were running beautifully! Who was it that cut into your way and kept you from obeying the truth?

⁸ in a flame of fire, who will take vengeance on those who do not know God, that is, those who will not listen to the good news of our Lord Jesus.

² For if the message spoken through angels proved to be valid, and every violation and infraction of it had its adequate penalty,

⁴ while God continued to confirm their testimony with signs, marvels, and various sorts of wonder-works, and with gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed in accordance with His will.

⁹ and because He was perfectly qualified for it He became the author of endless salvation for all who obey Him,

⁸ By faith Abraham, on being called, obeyed in starting off for a country which he was to receive as his own, and he did it in spite of the fact that he did not know where he was going.

²⁴ to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood which speaks a better message than even Abel's did. ²⁵ See to it that you do not refuse to listen to Him who is speaking to you. For if they did not escape, because they refused to listen to him who warned them here on earth, how much less can we, if we reject Him who is from heaven?

⁸ and: "A stone for them to stumble over and a rock to trip them up." They keep on stumbling over the message, because they are disobedient to it, and this is their appointed doom.
