¹³ And so these three, faith, hope, and love endure, but the greatest of them is love.

²⁹ Jesus answered, "The first one is, 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord, ³⁰ and you must love the Lord your God with your whole heart, your whole soul, your whole mind, and your whole strength.' ³¹ And this is the second, 'You must love your neighbor as you do yourself.' No other command is greater than these."

¹³ The portion of them on the rock illustrates those who accept the message, bubbling over with joy when they first hear it, but it takes no real root. They believe for awhile, but in the time of testing they fall away. ¹⁴ And the portion of them falling among the thorns illustrates those who hear it, but as soon as they pass on they are choked out by the worries and wealth and pleasures of life, and thus yield no mature fruit. ¹⁵ But the portion in rich soil illustrates those who listen to the message, keep it in good and honest hearts, and in patience yield fruit.

²⁷ Then he answered, "You must love the Lord your God with your whole heart, your whole soul, your whole strength, and your whole mind, and your neighbor as you do yourself."

³² but I have prayed especially for you that your own faith may not utterly fail. And you yourself, after you have turned, must strengthen your brothers."

⁴ and endurance, tested character, and tested character, hope, ⁵ and hope never disappoints us; for through the Holy Spirit that has been given us, God's love has flooded our hearts.

²⁴ For we were saved in such a hope. ²⁵ But a hope that is seen is not real hope, for who hopes for what he actually sees? But if we hope for something we do not see, we keep on patiently waiting for it.

¹³ May the hope-inspiring God so fill you with perfect joy and peace through your continuing faith, that you may bubble over with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

¹⁴ If the structure which one builds upon it stands the test, he will get his pay.

¹ Now about the foods that have been sacrificed to idols: We know that every one of us has some knowledge of the matter. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.

³ But if a man loves God, God is known by him.

¹ If I could speak the languages of men, of angels too, and have no love, I am only a rattling pan or a clashing cymbal. ² If I should have the gift of prophecy, And know all secret truths, and knowledge in its every form, and have such perfect faith that I could move mountains, but have no love, I am nothing. ³ If I should dole out everything I have for charity, and give my body up to torture in mere boasting pride, but have no love, I get from it no good at all. ⁴ Love is so patient and so kind; love never boils with jealousy; it never boasts, is never puffed with pride; ⁵ It does not act with rudeness, or insist upon its rights; it never gets provoked, it never harbors evil thoughts; ⁶ Is never glad when wrong is done, but always glad when truth prevails; ⁷ It bears up under anything; it exercises faith in everything; it keeps up hope in everything; it gives us power to endure in anything. ⁸ Love never fails; if there are prophecies, they will be set aside; if now exist ecstatic speakings, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will soon be set aside;

¹ Keep on pursuing love, but still keep cultivating your spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophesying.

¹⁴ let everything be done in love.

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment-bar of Christ, that each may get his pay for what he has done, whether it be good or bad.

¹⁵ and He died for all, that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.

⁶ For in union with Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor lack of it counts for anything; but only faith that is spurred on to action by love.

¹³ For you, brothers, were called to freedom; only you must not let your freedom be an excuse for the gratification of your lower nature, but in love be slaves to one another. ¹⁴ For the whole law is summed up in one saying, "You must love your neighbor as you do yourself." ¹⁵ But if you continue to bite and eat one another, beware lest you are destroyed by one another. ¹⁶ I mean this: Practice living by the Spirit and then by no means will you gratify the cravings of your lower nature. ¹⁷ For the cravings of the lower nature are just the opposite to those of the Spirit, and the cravings of the Spirit are just the opposite of those of the lower nature; these two are opposed to each other, so that you cannot do anything you please. ¹⁸ But if you are guided by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law. ¹⁹ Now the practices of the lower nature are clear enough: Sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, ²⁰ idolatry, sorcery, enmity, quarreling, jealousy, anger, intrigues, dissensions, party-spirit, ²¹ envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I now warn you, as I have done before, that those who practice such things shall not be heirs of the kingdom of God. ²² But the product of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

⁹ And it is my prayer that your love may overflow still more and more, directed by fuller knowledge and keener insight,

⁵ because of your hope of what is laid up for you in heaven. Long ago you heard of this hope through the message of the good news

²⁷ to whom God has chosen to make known how glorious are the riches of this open secret among the heathen, namely, Christ in you the hope of your glorification.

¹⁴ And over all these qualities put on love, which is the tie of perfection that binds us together.

⁸ but let us who belong to the day keep sober, clothed with faith and love for a coat of mail and with the hope of salvation for a helmet.

⁵ But the aim of your instruction is to be love that flows out of a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith.

⁷ For the Spirit that God has given us does not impart timidity but power and love and self-control.

¹¹ And we desire each one of you to continue to show the same earnestness to the very end, that you may enjoy your hope to the fullest,

¹⁹ This hope we have as an anchor for our souls, secure and safe, which reaches up behind the heavenly veil,

³⁵ So you must never give up your confident courage, for it holds a rich reward for you.

³⁹ But we are not of a disposition to draw back so as to perish, but we have faith that leads to the saving of the soul.

²¹ who through Him trust in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory; so that your faith and hope may rest in God.

¹⁰ Whoever continues to love his brother is always in the light, and he is no hindrance to others.

¹⁴ I write to you, fathers, because you know Him who has existed from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and God's message is always in your hearts, and you have conquered the evil one.

²⁴ Let what you have heard from the beginning continue to live in your hearts; if you do, you will always remain in union with the Son and the Father.

³ And everyone who has this hope in him tries to make himself as pure as He is.

⁹ No one who is born of God makes a practice of sinning, because the God-given life-principle continues to live in him, and so he cannot practice sinning, because he is born of God.

⁷ Dearly beloved, let us practice loving one another, because love originates with God, and everyone who practices loving is a child of God and knows God by experience. ⁸ Whoever does not love has never come to know God by experience, because God is love. ⁹ This is the way God's love for us has been shown, namely, God has sent His only Son into the world that we through Him might have life. ¹⁰ In this way is seen the true love, not that we loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. ¹¹ Dearly beloved, if God has loved us so, we ought to love one another too. ¹² No one has ever seen God; yet if we practice loving one another, God remains in union with us, and our love for Him attains perfection in our hearts, ¹³ By the fact that He has given us a portion of His Spirit we can be sure that we remain in union with Him and He in union with us. ¹⁴ We have seen and now testify that the Father has sent His Son to be the Saviour of the world. ¹⁵ Whoever owns that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in union with him and he in union with God. ¹⁶ So we know by experience and trust the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever continues to love continues in union with God and God in union with him. ¹⁷ Our love attains perfection through our having perfect confidence about the day of judgment, because here in this world we are living as He did. ¹⁸ There is no fear in love, and perfect love drives out fear, because fear pertains to punishment, and no one who is subject to fear has attained perfection in love.

¹ Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves His child. ² This is how we can be sure that we love the children of God, by continuing to love God and to obey His commands. ³ For love to God means this, to practice obedience to His commands, and His commands are not burdensome, ⁴ for every child of God continues to conquer the world. Our faith is the victory that has conquered the world. ⁵ Now who is it that continues to conquer the world, if it is not the person who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

⁴ I am happy to find that some of your children are living by the truth, just as we had been commanded from the Father to do. ⁵ And now I beg you, my lady, not as though I were writing you a new command, but one which we had from the beginning, that we continue to love one another. ⁶ Now love means this, that we keep on living in accordance with His commands. The command is this, that we continue to live in love.
