¹ At that time Jesus went on the sabbath thro' the corn, and his disciples were hungry, and plucked the ears of corn and ate.

²³ And he went thro' the corn-fields on the sabbath day: and his disciples as they went, plucked the ears of corn. ²⁴ And the Pharisees said to him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath that which is not lawful? ²⁵ And he said to them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need and was hungry he and they that were with him? ²⁶ How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the shew-bread, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and gave also to them who were with him? ²⁷ And he said to them, The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath. ²⁸ Moreover the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

¹ And on the first sabbath after the second day of unleavened bread, he went thro' the corn-fields, and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and ate, rubbing them in their hands. ² And certain of the Pharisees said to them, Why do ye what it is not lawful to do on the sabbath day? ³ And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read, even this, what David did, when he hungered, and they that were with him? ⁴ How he went into the house of God, and took and ate the shew-bread, and gave also to them that were with him, which it is not lawful to eat, but for the priests only? ⁵ And he said to them, The Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
