¹⁶ Moreover, when ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear to men to fast. Verily, I say to you, they have their reward.

² Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,

¹⁸ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a demon. ¹⁹ The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold, a man gluttonous, and a wine-bibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified by her children.

As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. ²⁰ But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then they will fast in those days. ²¹ No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up, taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse. ²² And no man putteth new wine into old bottles, else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.

³³ And they said to him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink? ³⁴ And he said to them, Can ye make the children of the bride-chamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? ³⁵ But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then they will fast in those days. ³⁶ And he spoke also a parable to them: No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old: if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new, agreeth not with the old. ³⁷ And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles will perish. ³⁸ But new wine must be put into new bottles, and both are preserved. ³⁹ No man also having drank old wine, immediately desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.

⁹ And he spoke this parable to certain who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: ¹⁰ Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. ¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. ¹² I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
