¹⁸ I will raise up to them a prophet from among their brethren, like thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak to them all that I shall command him. ¹⁹ And it shall come to pass, that whoever will not hearken to my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

⁴⁴ But I say to you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who despitefully use you, and persecute you;

¹ Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, who were of Jerusalem, saying, ² Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. ³ But he answered and said to them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? ⁴ For God commanded, saying, Honor thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. ⁵ But ye say, Whoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatever thou mightest be profited by me; ⁶ And honor not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition. ⁷ Ye hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying, ⁸ This people draw nigh to me with their mouth, and honor me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. ⁹ But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

²³ And when he had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things; and who gave thee this authority? ²⁴ And Jesus answered and said to them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. ²⁵ The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or from men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, if we shall say, From heaven; he will say to us, Why then did ye not believe him? ²⁶ But if we shall say, From men; we fear the people: for all hold John as a prophet. ²⁷ And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said to them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

² Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses's seat. ³ All therefore, whatever they bid you observe, that observe and do: but do not ye according to their works: for they say, and do not. ⁴ For they bind heavy burdens, and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. ⁵ But all their works they do to be seen by men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, ⁶ And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,

⁸ And Jesus said to them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

⁴⁶ Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts; ⁴⁷ Who devour widows' houses, and for a show make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.

¹⁵ For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.

²² For Moses truly said to the fathers, A Prophet will the Lord your God raise up to you, of your brethren, like me; him shall ye hear in all things, whatever he shall say to you. ²³ And it shall come to pass, that every soul who will not hear that Prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.
