²⁸ And it came to pass when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine.

¹⁶ And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath, and stood up to read. ¹⁷ And there was delivered to him the book of the prophet Isaiah. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son? ²³ And he said to them, Ye will surely say to me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country. ²⁴ And he said, Verily I say to you, No prophet is accepted in his own country. ²⁵ But I tell you in truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut three years and six months when great famine was throughout all the land: ²⁶ But to none of them was Elijah sent, save to Sarepta, a city of Sidon, to a woman that was a widow. ²⁷ And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian. ²⁸ And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, ²⁹ And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. ³⁰ But he passing through the midst of them, went away,

¹¹ He came to his own, and his own received him not.

¹⁵ And the Jews marveled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned? ¹⁶ Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

¹³ Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.

And when they were assembled, he said to them, Men, brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet I was delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans. ¹⁸ Who when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me. ¹⁹ But when the Jews spoke against it, I was constrained to appeal to Cesar; not that I had aught to accuse my nation of. ²⁰ For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain. ²¹ And they said to him, We have neither received letters from Judea concerning thee, neither have any of the brethren that came shown or spoken any harm of thee. ²² But we desire to hear from thee, what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against. ²³ And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening. ²⁴ And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not. ²⁵ And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after Paul had spoken one word, Well spoke the Holy Spirit by Isaiah the prophet to our fathers, ²⁶ Saying, Go to this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive. ²⁷ For the heart of this people is become gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. ²⁸ Be it known therefore to you, that the salvation of God is sent to the Gentiles, and they will hear it.
