¹ My son, if you have become collateral for your neighbor, if you have struck your hands in pledge for a stranger, ² you are trapped by the words of your mouth; you are ensnared with the words of your mouth. ³ Do this now, my son, and deliver yourself, since you have come into the hand of your neighbor. Go, humble yourself. Press your plea with your neighbor. ⁴ Give no sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids. ⁵ Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler. ⁶ Go to the ant, you sluggard. Consider her ways, and be wise; ⁷ which having no chief, overseer, or ruler, ⁸ provides her bread in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest. ⁹ How long will you sleep, sluggard? When will you arise out of your sleep? ¹⁰ A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ¹¹ so your poverty will come as a robber, and your scarcity as an armed man. ¹² A worthless person, a man of iniquity, is he who walks with a perverse mouth, ¹³ who winks with his eyes, who signals with his feet, who motions with his fingers, ¹⁴ in whose heart is perverseness, who devises evil continually, who always sows discord. ¹⁵ Therefore his calamity will come suddenly. He will be broken suddenly, and that without remedy. ¹⁶ There are six things which Yahweh hates; yes, seven which are an abomination to him: ¹⁷ arrogant eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, ¹⁸ a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are swift in running to mischief, ¹⁹ a false witness who utters lies, and he who sows discord among brothers. ²⁰ My son, keep your father’s commandment, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching. ²¹ Bind them continually on your heart. Tie them around your neck. ²² When you walk, it will lead you. When you sleep, it will watch over you. When you awake, it will talk with you. ²³ For the commandment is a lamp, and the law is light. Reproofs of instruction are the way of life, ²⁴ to keep you from the immoral woman, from the flattery of the wayward wife’s tongue. ²⁵ Don’t lust after her beauty in your heart, neither let her captivate you with her eyelids. ²⁶ For a prostitute reduces you to a piece of bread. The adulteress hunts for your precious life. ²⁷ Can a man scoop fire into his lap, and his clothes not be burned? ²⁸ Or can one walk on hot coals, and his feet not be scorched? ²⁹ So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife. Whoever touches her will not be unpunished. ³⁰ Men don’t despise a thief if he steals to satisfy himself when he is hungry; ³¹ but if he is found, he shall restore seven times. He shall give all the wealth of his house. ³² He who commits adultery with a woman is void of understanding. He who does it destroys his own soul. ³³ He will get wounds and dishonor. His reproach will not be wiped away. ³⁴ For jealousy arouses the fury of the husband. He won’t spare in the day of vengeance. ³⁵ He won’t regard any ransom, neither will he rest content, though you give many gifts.

⁹ I’ll be collateral for him. From my hand will you require him. If I don’t bring him to you, and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever;

³² For your servant became collateral for the boy to my father, saying, ‘If I don’t bring him to you, then I will bear the blame to my father forever.’ ³³ Now therefore, please let your servant stay instead of the boy, my lord’s slave; and let the boy go up with his brothers.

³ “Now give a pledge. Be collateral for me with yourself. Who is there who will strike hands with me?

¹⁵ He who is collateral for a stranger will suffer for it, but he who refuses pledges of collateral is secure.

¹⁸ A man void of understanding strikes hands, and becomes collateral in the presence of his neighbor.

¹⁶ Take the garment of one who puts up collateral for a stranger; and hold him in pledge for a wayward woman.

²⁶ Don’t you be one of those who strike hands, of those who are collateral for debts.

¹³ Take his garment when he puts up collateral for a stranger. Hold it for a wayward woman!

¹⁸ But if he has wronged you at all or owes you anything, put that to my account. ¹⁹ I, Paul, write this with my own hand: I will repay it (not to mention to you that you owe to me even your own self besides).

⁵ Now Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam, and to the princes of Judah, who were gathered together to Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said to them, “Yahweh says, ‘You have forsaken me, therefore I have also left you in the hand of Shishak.’”

¹² He did that which was evil in Yahweh his God’s sight. He didn’t humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet speaking from Yahweh’s mouth.

⁸ You have not shut me up into the hand of the enemy. You have set my feet in a large place.

¹⁰ Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.

⁴ I will not give sleep to my eyes, or slumber to my eyelids;

¹⁰ A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ¹¹ so your poverty will come as a robber, and your scarcity as an armed man.

³⁵ Watch therefore, for you don’t know when the lord of the house is coming, whether at evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning; ³⁶ lest coming suddenly he might find you sleeping.

¹ For the Chief Musician. By David. In Yahweh, I take refuge. How can you say to my soul, “Flee as a bird to your mountain”?

³ For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler, and from the deadly pestilence.

⁷ Our soul has escaped like a bird out of the fowler’s snare. The snare is broken, and we have escaped.

¹⁷ For the net is spread in vain in the sight of any bird;

⁷ “But ask the animals, now, and they will teach you; the birds of the sky, and they will tell you. ⁸ Or speak to the earth, and it will teach you. The fish of the sea will declare to you.

⁹ How long will you sleep, sluggard? When will you arise out of your sleep?

²⁶ As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to those who send him.

⁴ The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing, but the desire of the diligent shall be fully satisfied.

¹⁹ The way of the sluggard is like a thorn patch, but the path of the upright is a highway.

⁹ One who is slack in his work is brother to him who is a master of destruction.

¹⁵ Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep. The idle soul shall suffer hunger.

²⁴ The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

⁴ The sluggard will not plow by reason of the winter; therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.

²⁵ The desire of the sluggard kills him, for his hands refuse to labor.

¹³ The sluggard says, “There is a lion outside! I will be killed in the streets!”

³⁰ I went by the field of the sluggard, by the vineyard of the man void of understanding: ³¹ Behold, it was all grown over with thorns. Its surface was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down. ³² Then I saw, and considered well. I saw, and received instruction: ³³ a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep, ³⁴ so your poverty will come as a robber and your want as an armed man.

¹³ The sluggard says, “There is a lion in the road! A fierce lion roams the streets!” ¹⁴ As the door turns on its hinges, so does the sluggard on his bed. ¹⁵ The sluggard buries his hand in the dish. He is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth. ¹⁶ The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who answer with discretion.

²⁵ The ants are not a strong people, yet they provide their food in the summer.

³ The ox knows his owner, and the donkey his master’s crib; but Israel doesn’t know. My people don’t consider.”

²⁶ See the birds of the sky, that they don’t sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns. Your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you of much more value than they?

²⁶ “But his lord answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant. You knew that I reap where I didn’t sow, and gather where I didn’t scatter.

¹¹ not lagging in diligence; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;

¹² that you won’t be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and perseverance inherited the promises.

³⁹ “Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

²⁶ “Is it by your wisdom that the hawk soars, and stretches her wings toward the south? ²⁷ Is it at your command that the eagle mounts up, and makes his nest on high? ²⁸ On the cliff he dwells, and makes his home, on the point of the cliff, and the stronghold. ²⁹ From there he spies out the prey. His eyes see it afar off. ³⁰ His young ones also suck up blood. Where the slain are, there he is.”

⁴ Will he make a covenant with you, that you should take him for a servant forever? ⁵ Will you play with him as with a bird? Or will you bind him for your girls? ⁶ Will traders barter for him? Will they part him among the merchants? ⁷ Can you fill his skin with barbed irons, or his head with fish spears? ⁸ Lay your hand on him. Remember the battle, and do so no more. ⁹ Behold, the hope of him is in vain. Won’t one be cast down even at the sight of him? ¹⁰ None is so fierce that he dare stir him up. Who then is he who can stand before me? ¹¹ Who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Everything under the heavens is mine. ¹² “I will not keep silence concerning his limbs, nor his mighty strength, nor his goodly frame. ¹³ Who can strip off his outer garment? Who will come within his jaws? ¹⁴ Who can open the doors of his face? Around his teeth is terror. ¹⁵ Strong scales are his pride, shut up together with a close seal. ¹⁶ One is so near to another, that no air can come between them. ¹⁷ They are joined to one another. They stick together, so that they can’t be pulled apart. ¹⁸ His sneezing flashes out light. His eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. ¹⁹ Out of his mouth go burning torches. Sparks of fire leap out. ²⁰ Out of his nostrils a smoke goes, as of a boiling pot over a fire of reeds. ²¹ His breath kindles coals. A flame goes out of his mouth. ²² There is strength in his neck. Terror dances before him. ²³ The flakes of his flesh are joined together. They are firm on him. They can’t be moved. ²⁴ His heart is as firm as a stone, yes, firm as the lower millstone. ²⁵ When he raises himself up, the mighty are afraid. They retreat before his thrashing. ²⁶ If one attacks him with the sword, it can’t prevail; nor the spear, the dart, nor the pointed shaft. ²⁷ He counts iron as straw; and bronze as rotten wood. ²⁸ The arrow can’t make him flee. Sling stones are like chaff to him. ²⁹ Clubs are counted as stubble. He laughs at the rushing of the javelin. ³⁰ His undersides are like sharp potsherds, leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge. ³¹ He makes the deep to boil like a pot. He makes the sea like a pot of ointment. ³² He makes a path shine after him. One would think the deep had white hair. ³³ On earth there is not his equal, that is made without fear. ³⁴ He sees everything that is high. He is king over all the sons of pride.”

²⁷ The locusts have no king, yet they advance in ranks.

⁵ He who gathers in summer is a wise son, but he who sleeps during the harvest is a son who causes shame.

¹⁹ laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold of eternal life.

⁸ Consider, you senseless among the people; you fools, when will you be wise?

²² “How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?

¹⁴ Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness, that you may be saved. How long will your evil thoughts lodge within you?

⁶ There came a man, sent from God, whose name was John.

¹¹ Do this, knowing the time, that it is already time for you to awaken out of sleep, for salvation is now nearer to us than when we first believed.

¹⁴ Therefore he says, “Awake, you who sleep, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

² For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night. ³ For when they are saying, “Peace and safety,” then sudden destruction will come on them, like birth pains on a pregnant woman. Then they will in no way escape. ⁴ But you, brothers, aren’t in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief. ⁵ You are all children of light and children of the day. We don’t belong to the night, nor to darkness, ⁶ so then let’s not sleep, as the rest do, but let’s watch and be sober. ⁷ For those who sleep, sleep in the night; and those who are drunk are drunk in the night.

⁶ Go to the ant, you sluggard. Consider her ways, and be wise;

³³ Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will imagine confusing things. ³⁴ Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the middle of the sea, or as he who lies on top of the rigging:

⁴ He becomes poor who works with a lazy hand, but the hand of the diligent brings wealth.

³⁴ so your poverty will come as a robber and your want as an armed man.

²⁸ Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger burned against David, and he said, “Why have you come down? With whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride, and the naughtiness of your heart; for you have come down that you might see the battle.”

³ For the wicked boasts of his heart’s cravings. He blesses the greedy and condemns Yahweh.

⁷ His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and oppression. Under his tongue is mischief and iniquity.

³ The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit. He has ceased to be wise and to do good.

² Your tongue plots destruction, like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. ³ You love evil more than good, lying rather than speaking the truth. Selah. ⁴ You love all devouring words, you deceitful tongue.

⁷ Behold, they spew with their mouth. Swords are in their lips, “For”, they say, “who hears us?”

⁸ They scoff and speak with malice. In arrogance, they threaten oppression. ⁹ They have set their mouth in the heavens. Their tongue walks through the earth.

¹² to deliver you from the way of evil, from the men who speak perverse things,

²⁴ Put away from yourself a perverse mouth. Put corrupt lips far from you.

¹⁴ in whose heart is perverseness, who devises evil continually, who always sows discord.

¹³ The fear of Yahweh is to hate evil. I hate pride, arrogance, the evil way, and the perverse mouth.

⁶ The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them, but the unfaithful will be trapped by evil desires.

²⁷ A worthless man devises mischief. His speech is like a scorching fire.

⁴ An evildoer heeds wicked lips. A liar gives ear to a mischievous tongue.

² One basket had very good figs, like the figs that are first-ripe; and the other basket had very bad figs, which could not be eaten, they were so bad.

⁸ “‘As the bad figs, which can’t be eaten, they are so bad,’ surely Yahweh says, ‘So I will give up Zedekiah the king of Judah, and his princes, and the remnant of Jerusalem, who remain in this land, and those who dwell in the land of Egypt. ⁹ I will even give them up to be tossed back and forth among all the kingdoms of the earth for evil; to be a reproach and a proverb, a taunt and a curse, in all places where I will drive them. ¹⁰ I will send the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, among them, until they are consumed from off the land that I gave to them and to their fathers.’”

³⁴ You offspring of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.

³⁰ Men will arise from among your own selves, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.

¹³ Besides, they also learn to be idle, going about from house to house. Not only idle, but also gossips and busybodies, saying things which they ought not.

¹⁰ For there are also many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, ¹¹ whose mouths must be stopped: men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for dishonest gain’s sake.

²¹ Therefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna.

¹² Why does your heart carry you away? Why do your eyes flash,

¹⁹ Don’t let those who are my enemies wrongfully rejoice over me; neither let those who hate me without a cause wink their eyes.

⁶ She gives no thought to the way of life. Her ways are crooked, and she doesn’t know it.

¹⁰ One winking with the eye causes sorrow, but a chattering fool will fall.

⁴ He plots iniquity on his bed. He sets himself in a way that is not good. He doesn’t abhor evil.

¹⁴ who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the perverseness of evil,

²⁹ Don’t devise evil against your neighbor, since he dwells securely by you.

¹⁸ a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are swift in running to mischief, ¹⁹ a false witness who utters lies, and he who sows discord among brothers.

²⁸ A perverse man stirs up strife. A whisperer separates close friends. ²⁹ A man of violence entices his neighbor, and leads him in a way that is not good. ³⁰ One who winks his eyes to plot perversities, one who compresses his lips, is bent on evil.

⁸ The way of the guilty is devious, but the conduct of the innocent is upright.

⁸ He who sows wickedness reaps trouble, and the rod of his fury will be destroyed.

¹⁷ Like one who grabs a dog’s ears is one who passes by and meddles in a quarrel not his own. ¹⁸ Like a madman who shoots torches, arrows, and death, ¹⁹ is the man who deceives his neighbor and says, “Am I not joking?” ²⁰ For lack of wood a fire goes out. Without gossip, a quarrel dies down. ²¹ As coals are to hot embers, and wood to fire, so is a contentious man to kindling strife. ²² The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, they go down into the innermost parts.

⁷ The ways of the scoundrel are evil. He devises wicked plans to destroy the humble with lying words, even when the needy speaks right.

²⁰ But the wicked are like the troubled sea; for it can’t rest and its waters cast up mire and mud.

² He said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who devise iniquity, and who give wicked counsel in this city;

⁷ For they sow the wind, and they will reap the whirlwind. He has no standing grain. The stalk will yield no head. If it does yield, strangers will swallow it up.

¹ Woe to those who devise iniquity and work evil on their beds! When the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand.

¹⁷ Now I beg you, brothers, look out for those who are causing the divisions and occasions of stumbling, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and turn away from them.

⁷ Don’t be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. ⁸ For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption. But he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.

¹⁶ but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until Yahweh’s wrath arose against his people, until there was no remedy.

²² “Now consider this, you who forget God, lest I tear you into pieces, and there be no one to deliver.

¹⁸ Surely you set them in slippery places. You throw them down to destruction. ¹⁹ How they are suddenly destroyed! They are completely swept away with terrors. ²⁰ As a dream when one wakes up, so, Lord, when you awake, you will despise their fantasies.

²⁷ when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when your disaster comes on like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come on you.

¹ He who is often rebuked and stiffens his neck will be destroyed suddenly, with no remedy.

¹³ therefore this iniquity shall be to you like a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking comes suddenly in an instant. ¹⁴ He will break it as a potter’s vessel is broken, breaking it in pieces without sparing, so that there won’t be found among the broken pieces a piece good enough to take fire from the hearth, or to dip up water out of the cistern.”

¹¹ and shall tell them, ‘Yahweh of Armies says: “Even so I will break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter’s vessel, that can’t be made whole again. They will bury in Topheth, until there is no place to bury.

³ For when they are saying, “Peace and safety,” then sudden destruction will come on them, like birth pains on a pregnant woman. Then they will in no way escape.

¹⁰ There shall not be found with you anyone who makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who tells fortunes, or an enchanter, or a sorcerer, ¹¹ or a charmer, or someone who consults with a familiar spirit, or a wizard, or a necromancer. ¹² For whoever does these things is an abomination to Yahweh. Because of these abominations, Yahweh your God drives them out from before you.

¹⁸ You shall not bring the hire of a prostitute, or the wages of a male prostitute, into the house of Yahweh your God for any vow; for both of these are an abomination to Yahweh your God.

⁴ her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife after she is defiled; for that would be an abomination to Yahweh. You shall not cause the land to sin, which Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance.

¹⁶ For all who do such things, all who do unrighteously, are an abomination to Yahweh your God.

⁵ Yahweh examines the righteous, but his soul hates the wicked and him who loves violence.

³² For the perverse is an abomination to Yahweh, but his friendship is with the upright.

¹ A false balance is an abomination to Yahweh, but accurate weights are his delight.

²⁰ Those who are perverse in heart are an abomination to Yahweh, but those whose ways are blameless are his delight.

⁸ The sacrifice made by the wicked is an abomination to Yahweh, but the prayer of the upright is his delight. ⁹ The way of the wicked is an abomination to Yahweh, but he loves him who follows after righteousness.

¹⁵ He who justifies the wicked, and he who condemns the righteous, both of them alike are an abomination to Yahweh.

¹⁰ Differing weights and differing measures, both of them alike are an abomination to Yahweh.

²³ Yahweh detests differing weights, and dishonest scales are not pleasing.

¹⁸ “There are three things which are too amazing for me, four which I don’t understand:

²¹ “For three things the earth trembles, and under four, it can’t bear up:

²⁴ “There are four things which are little on the earth, but they are exceedingly wise:

²⁹ “There are three things which are stately in their march, four which are stately in going:

³ Yahweh says: “For three transgressions of Damascus, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron;

⁶ Yahweh says: “For three transgressions of Gaza, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they carried away captive the whole community, to deliver them up to Edom;

⁹ Yahweh says: “For three transgressions of Tyre, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they delivered up the whole community to Edom, and didn’t remember the brotherly covenant;

¹¹ Yahweh says: “For three transgressions of Edom, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because he pursued his brother with the sword, and cast off all pity, and his anger raged continually, and he kept his wrath forever;

¹ Yahweh says: “For three transgressions of Moab, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime;

⁴ Yahweh says: “For three transgressions of Judah, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they have rejected Yahweh’s law, and have not kept his statutes, and their lies have led them astray, after which their fathers walked;

⁶ Yahweh says: “For three transgressions of Israel, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they have sold the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals;

²⁷ There will in no way enter into it anything profane, or one who causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

¹⁰ This is so that innocent blood will not be shed in the middle of your land which Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance, leaving blood guilt on you.

²⁵ ‘Cursed is he who takes a bribe to kill an innocent person.’ All the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

⁴ and also for the innocent blood that he shed; for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, and Yahweh would not pardon.

⁶ You will destroy those who speak lies. Yahweh abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.

⁴ The wicked, in the pride of his face, has no room in his thoughts for God.

²⁷ For you will save the afflicted people, but the arrogant eyes you will bring down.

¹⁸ Let the lying lips be mute, which speak against the righteous insolently, with pride and contempt.

⁶ Therefore pride is like a chain around their neck. Violence covers them like a garment. ⁷ Their eyes bulge with fat. Their minds pass the limits of conceit. ⁸ They scoff and speak with malice. In arrogance, they threaten oppression.

⁵ I will silence whoever secretly slanders his neighbor. I won’t tolerate one who is arrogant and conceited.

² Deliver my soul, Yahweh, from lying lips, from a deceitful tongue. ³ What will be given to you, and what will be done more to you, you deceitful tongue?

¹ A Song of Ascents. By David. Yahweh, my heart isn’t arrogant, nor my eyes lofty; nor do I concern myself with great matters, or things too wonderful for me.

¹¹ If they say, “Come with us. Let’s lay in wait for blood. Let’s lurk secretly for the innocent without cause.

²² Lying lips are an abomination to Yahweh, but those who do the truth are his delight.

⁵ A truthful witness will not lie, but a false witness pours out lies.

⁷ Arrogant speech isn’t fitting for a fool, much less do lying lips fit a prince.

⁴ A high look and a proud heart, the lamp of the wicked, is sin.

²⁸ A lying tongue hates those it hurts; and a flattering mouth works ruin.

¹³ There is a generation, oh how lofty are their eyes! Their eyelids are lifted up.

¹⁵ When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you. Yes, when you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood.

¹¹ The lofty looks of man will be brought low, the arrogance of men will be bowed down, and Yahweh alone will be exalted in that day.

⁹ The look of their faces testify against them. They parade their sin like Sodom. They don’t hide it. Woe to their soul! For they have brought disaster upon themselves.

¹⁶ Moreover Yahweh said, “Because the daughters of Zion are arrogant, and walk with outstretched necks and flirting eyes, walking to trip as they go, jingling ornaments on their feet;

³ For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity. Your lips have spoken lies. Your tongue mutters wickedness. ⁴ No one sues in righteousness, and no one pleads in truth. They trust in vanity, and speak lies. They conceive mischief, and give birth to iniquity. ⁵ They hatch adders’ eggs, and weave the spider’s web. He who eats of their eggs dies; and that which is crushed breaks out into a viper. ⁶ Their webs won’t become garments. They won’t cover themselves with their works. Their works are works of iniquity, and acts of violence are in their hands. ⁷ Their feet run to evil, and they hurry to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity. Desolation and destruction are in their paths.

¹ Hear Yahweh’s word, you children of Israel; for Yahweh has a charge against the inhabitants of the land: “Indeed there is no truth, nor goodness, nor knowledge of God in the land. ² There is cursing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery; they break boundaries, and bloodshed causes bloodshed.

⁴⁴ You are of your father, the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and doesn’t stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks on his own; for he is a liar, and the father of lies.

⁵ Likewise, you younger ones, be subject to the elder. Yes, all of you clothe yourselves with humility, to subject yourselves to one another; for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

¹⁵ Outside are the dogs, the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

⁵ Yahweh saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of man’s heart was continually only evil.

¹⁶ for their feet run to evil. They hurry to shed blood.

⁸ One who plots to do evil will be called a schemer.

⁷ Their feet run to evil, and they hurry to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity. Desolation and destruction are in their paths.

¹⁷ and let none of you devise evil in your hearts against his neighbor, and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate,” says Yahweh.

¹⁵ “Their feet are swift to shed blood.

¹⁶ “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

¹ “You shall not spread a false report. Don’t join your hand with the wicked to be a malicious witness.

¹⁶ If an unrighteous witness rises up against any man to testify against him of wrongdoing, ¹⁷ then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before Yahweh, before the priests and the judges who shall be in those days; ¹⁸ and the judges shall make diligent inquisition; and behold, if the witness is a false witness, and has testified falsely against his brother, ¹⁹ then you shall do to him as he had thought to do to his brother. So you shall remove the evil from among you. ²⁰ Those who remain shall hear, and fear, and will never again commit any such evil among you.

¹⁰ Set two men, wicked fellows, before him, and let them testify against him, saying, ‘You cursed God and the king!’ Then carry him out, and stone him to death.” ¹¹ The men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had instructed them in the letters which she had written and sent to them. ¹² They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. ¹³ The two men, the wicked fellows, came in and sat before him. The wicked fellows testified against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, “Naboth cursed God and the king!” Then they carried him out of the city and stoned him to death with stones. ¹⁴ Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, “Naboth has been stoned, and is dead.” ¹⁵ When Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned, and was dead, Jezebel said to Ahab, “Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money; for Naboth is not alive, but dead.”

¹² Don’t deliver me over to the desire of my adversaries, for false witnesses have risen up against me, such as breathe out cruelty.

¹¹ Unrighteous witnesses rise up. They ask me about things that I don’t know about.

¹⁷ He who is truthful testifies honestly, but a false witness lies.

²⁸ A perverse man stirs up strife. A whisperer separates close friends.

⁵ A false witness shall not be unpunished. He who pours out lies shall not go free.

⁹ A false witness shall not be unpunished. He who utters lies shall perish.

¹⁰ Drive out the mocker, and strife will go out; yes, quarrels and insults will stop.

¹⁸ A man who gives false testimony against his neighbor is like a club, a sword, or a sharp arrow.

²⁰ For lack of wood a fire goes out. Without gossip, a quarrel dies down.

¹⁹ For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies.

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests, the elders, and the whole council sought false testimony against Jesus, that they might put him to death;

¹³ and set up false witnesses who said, “This man never stops speaking blasphemous words against this holy place and the law.

²³ But refuse foolish and ignorant questionings, knowing that they generate strife.

¹⁴ But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don’t boast and don’t lie against the truth. ¹⁵ This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic. ¹⁶ For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.

¹⁸ Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

⁹ I wrote to the assembly, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, doesn’t accept what we say. ¹⁰ Therefore if I come, I will call attention to his deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with wicked words. Not content with this, neither does he himself receive the brothers, and those who would, he forbids and throws out of the assembly.

¹⁸ If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and though they chasten him, will not listen to them,

¹⁶ ‘Cursed is he who dishonors his father or his mother.’ All the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

⁸ My son, listen to your father’s instruction, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching: ⁹ for they will be a garland to grace your head, and chains around your neck.

¹ My son, keep my words. Lay up my commandments within you. ² Keep my commandments and live! Guard my teaching as the apple of your eye. ³ Bind them on your fingers. Write them on the tablet of your heart. ⁴ Tell wisdom, “You are my sister.” Call understanding your relative,

¹ Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

¹⁶ It shall be for a sign on your hand, and for symbols between your eyes; for by strength of hand Yahweh brought us out of Egypt.”

⁸ You shall bind them for a sign on your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes.

³ Don’t let kindness and truth forsake you. Bind them around your neck. Write them on the tablet of your heart.

⁶ Don’t forsake her, and she will preserve you. Love her, and she will keep you.

²¹ Let them not depart from your eyes. Keep them in the center of your heart.

³ being revealed that you are a letter of Christ, served by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tablets of stone, but in tablets that are hearts of flesh.

⁴ As for the deeds of men, by the word of your lips, I have kept myself from the ways of the violent.

³ Oh, send out your light and your truth. Let them lead me. Let them bring me to your holy hill, to your tents.

⁹ BET How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word.

¹¹ I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

²⁴ Indeed your statutes are my delight, and my counselors.

⁵⁴ Your statutes have been my songs in the house where I live.

⁹⁷ MEM How I love your law! It is my meditation all day.

¹⁴⁸ My eyes stay open through the night watches, that I might meditate on your word.

¹¹ Discretion will watch over you. Understanding will keep you,

²³ Then you shall walk in your way securely. Your foot won’t stumble. ²⁴ When you lie down, you will not be afraid. Yes, you will lie down, and your sleep will be sweet.

¹⁸ After this he will turn his face to the islands, and will take many; but a prince will cause the reproach offered by him to cease. Yes, moreover, he will cause his reproach to turn on him. ¹⁹ Then he will turn his face toward the fortresses of his own land; but he will stumble and fall, and won’t be found. ²⁰ “Then one who will cause a tax collector to pass through the kingdom to maintain its glory will stand up in his place; but within few days he shall be destroyed, not in anger, and not in battle. ²¹ “In his place a contemptible person will stand up, to whom they had not given the honor of the kingdom; but he will come in time of security, and will obtain the kingdom by flatteries.

¹⁷ “‘You shall not hate your brother in your heart. You shall surely rebuke your neighbor, and not bear sin because of him.

⁸ Yahweh’s precepts are right, rejoicing the heart. Yahweh’s commandment is pure, enlightening the eyes.

⁹⁸ Your commandments make me wiser than my enemies, for your commandments are always with me. ⁹⁹ I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation. ¹⁰⁰ I understand more than the aged, because I have kept your precepts.

¹⁰⁵ NUN Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

⁵ Let the righteous strike me, it is kindness; let him reprove me, it is like oil on the head; don’t let my head refuse it; Yet my prayer is always against evil deeds.

¹⁸ She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her. Happy is everyone who retains her.

⁴ He taught me, and said to me: “Let your heart retain my words. Keep my commandments, and live.

¹³ Take firm hold of instruction. Don’t let her go. Keep her, for she is your life.

¹² and say, “How I have hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;

²⁴ The path of life leads upward for the wise, to keep him from going downward to Sheol.

³¹ The ear that listens to reproof lives, and will be at home among the wise.

¹⁵ The rod of correction gives wisdom, but a child left to himself causes shame to his mother.

²⁰ Turn to the law and to the covenant! If they don’t speak according to this word, surely there is no morning for them.

⁸ “You shall say to this people, ‘Yahweh says: “Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.

¹⁹ We have the more sure word of prophecy; and you do well that you heed it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns, and the morning star arises in your hearts:

⁵ Remember therefore from where you have fallen, and repent and do the first works; or else I am coming to you swiftly, and will move your lamp stand out of its place, unless you repent.

¹⁶ to deliver you from the strange woman, even from the foreigner who flatters with her words,

³ For the lips of an adulteress drip honey. Her mouth is smoother than oil,

⁵ that they may keep you from the strange woman, from the foreigner who flatters with her words.

²⁶ I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and traps, whose hands are chains. Whoever pleases God shall escape from her; but the sinner will be ensnared by her.

³ Whoever loves wisdom brings joy to his father; but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.

⁸ Mockers stir up a city, but wise men turn away anger.

⁸ “‘Therefore the Lord Yahweh says: “Because you have spoken falsehood and seen lies, therefore, behold, I am against you,” says the Lord Yahweh.

¹⁸ and say, “The Lord Yahweh says: ‘Woe to the women who sew pillows on all elbows, and make kerchiefs for the head of persons of every stature to hunt souls! Will you hunt the souls of my people, and save souls alive for yourselves?

¹³ Not many days after, the younger son gathered all of this together and traveled into a far country. There he wasted his property with riotous living. ¹⁴ When he had spent all of it, there arose a severe famine in that country, and he began to be in need. ¹⁵ He went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed pigs.

³⁰ But when this your son came, who has devoured your living with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him.’

⁹ “If my heart has been enticed to a woman, and I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door, ¹⁰ then let my wife grind for another, and let others sleep with her. ¹¹ For that would be a heinous crime. Yes, it would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges; ¹² for it is a fire that consumes to destruction, and would root out all my increase.

⁴ They are all adulterers. They are burning like an oven that the baker stops stirring, from the kneading of the dough, until it is leavened. ⁵ On the day of our king, the princes made themselves sick with the heat of wine. He joined his hand with mockers. ⁶ For they have prepared their heart like an oven, while they lie in wait. Their baker sleeps all the night. In the morning it burns as a flaming fire. ⁷ They are all hot as an oven, and devour their judges. All their kings have fallen. There is no one among them who calls to me.

⁵ So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. See how a small fire can spread to a large forest!

¹⁸ Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this that you have done to me? Why didn’t you tell me that she was your wife? ¹⁹ Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her to be my wife? Now therefore, see your wife, take her, and go your way.”

⁴ Now Abimelech had not come near her. He said, “Lord, will you kill even a righteous nation? ⁵ Didn’t he tell me, ‘She is my sister’? She, even she herself, said, ‘He is my brother.’ I have done this in the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands.” ⁶ God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that in the integrity of your heart you have done this, and I also withheld you from sinning against me. Therefore I didn’t allow you to touch her. ⁷ Now therefore, restore the man’s wife. For he is a prophet, and he will pray for you, and you will live. If you don’t restore her, know for sure that you will die, you, and all who are yours.”

¹⁰ Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us!” ¹¹ Abimelech commanded all the people, saying, “He who touches this man or his wife will surely be put to death.”

¹⁰ “‘The man who commits adultery with another man’s wife, even he who commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

²¹ Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Go in to your father’s concubines that he has left to keep the house. Then all Israel will hear that you are abhorred by your father. Then the hands of all who are with you will be strong.”

⁵ Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to Yahweh: they shall certainly not be unpunished.

⁸ They were as fed horses roaming at large. Everyone neighed after his neighbor’s wife. ⁹ Shouldn’t I punish them for these things?” says Yahweh. “Shouldn’t my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

¹¹ One has committed abomination with his neighbor’s wife; and another has lewdly defiled his daughter-in-law. Another in you has humbled his sister, his father’s daughter.

⁵ I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the perjurers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and who deprive the foreigner of justice, and don’t fear me,” says Yahweh of Armies.

¹ Now concerning the things about which you wrote to me: it is good for a man not to touch a woman.

³⁹ “Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

¹ “If a man steals an ox or a sheep, and kills it or sells it, he shall pay five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep. ² If the thief is found breaking in, and is struck so that he dies, there shall be no guilt of bloodshed for him. ³ If the sun has risen on him, he is guilty of bloodshed. He shall make restitution. If he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. ⁴ If the stolen property is found in his hand alive, whether it is ox, donkey, or sheep, he shall pay double.

⁶ He must restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity!”

¹⁸ He will restore that for which he labored, and will not swallow it down. He will not rejoice according to the substance that he has gotten.

²⁵ But because he couldn’t pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, with his wife, his children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.

²² Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, ²³ and traded the glory of the incorruptible God for the likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of birds, four-footed animals, and creeping things. ²⁴ Therefore God also gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to uncleanness, that their bodies should be dishonored among themselves;

⁴ Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled; but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.

⁴ Boiling over like water, you shall not excel; because you went up to your father’s bed, then defiled it. He went up to my couch.

⁵ because David did that which was right in Yahweh’s eyes, and didn’t turn away from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life, except only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.

²⁶ Didn’t Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? Yet among many nations there was no king like him, and he was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless foreign women caused even him to sin.

⁴ Wrath is cruel, and anger is overwhelming; but who is able to stand before jealousy?

⁶ Set me as a seal on your heart, as a seal on your arm; for love is strong as death. Jealousy is as cruel as Sheol. Its flashes are flashes of fire, a very flame of Yahweh.

²² Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?

¹ Now Naaman, captain of the army of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honorable, because by him Yahweh had given victory to Syria: he was also a mighty man of valor, but he was a leper.

³ For I was a son to my father, tender and an only child in the sight of my mother.

¹³ So she caught him, and kissed him. With an impudent face she said to him:

²⁵ Before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was born;
