⁵² He has put down princes from their thrones, and has exalted the lowly.

⁴ “The bows of the mighty men are broken. Those who stumbled are armed with strength.

⁶ “Yahweh kills and makes alive. He brings down to Sheol and brings up. ⁷ Yahweh makes poor and makes rich. He brings low, he also lifts up. ⁸ He raises up the poor out of the dust. He lifts up the needy from the dunghill to make them sit with princes and inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are Yahweh’s. He has set the world on them.

¹¹ so that he sets up on high those who are low, those who mourn are exalted to safety. ¹² He frustrates the plans of the crafty, So that their hands can’t perform their enterprise. ¹³ He takes the wise in their own craftiness; the counsel of the cunning is carried headlong.

²⁴ He breaks mighty men in pieces in ways past finding out, and sets others in their place. ²⁵ Therefore he takes knowledge of their works. He overturns them in the night, so that they are destroyed. ²⁶ He strikes them as wicked men in the open sight of others; ²⁷ because they turned away from following him, and wouldn’t pay attention to any of his ways, ²⁸ so that they caused the cry of the poor to come to him. He heard the cry of the afflicted.

⁴⁰ He pours contempt on princes, and causes them to wander in a trackless waste. ⁴¹ Yet he lifts the needy out of their affliction, and increases their families like a flock.

⁶ Who stoops down to see in heaven and in the earth? ⁷ He raises up the poor out of the dust. Lifts up the needy from the ash heap, ⁸ that he may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people.

¹⁴ For out of prison he came out to be king; yes, even in his kingdom he was born poor.

²⁴ All the trees of the field will know that I, Yahweh, have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree flourish. “‘I, Yahweh, have spoken and have done it.’”

¹¹ In that day I will raise up the tent of David who is fallen, and close up its breaches, and I will raise up its ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old;

³ Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judah, and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” They were offended at him.

¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

⁹ But let the brother in humble circumstances glory in his high position; ¹⁰ and the rich, in that he is made humble, because like the flower in the grass, he will pass away.

¹⁰ Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.
