¹ “Isn’t a man forced to labor on earth? Aren’t his days like the days of a hired hand? ² As a servant who earnestly desires the shadow, as a hireling who looks for his wages, ³ so I am made to possess months of misery, wearisome nights are appointed to me. ⁴ When I lie down, I say, ‘When will I arise, and the night be gone?’ I toss and turn until the dawning of the day. ⁵ My flesh is clothed with worms and clods of dust. My skin closes up, and breaks out afresh. ⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, and are spent without hope. ⁷ Oh remember that my life is a breath. My eye will no more see good. ⁸ The eye of him who sees me will see me no more. Your eyes will be on me, but I will not be. ⁹ As the cloud is consumed and vanishes away, so he who goes down to Sheol will come up no more. ¹⁰ He will return no more to his house, neither will his place know him any more. ¹¹ “Therefore I will not keep silent. I will speak in the anguish of my spirit. I will complain in the bitterness of my soul. ¹² Am I a sea, or a sea monster, that you put a guard over me? ¹³ When I say, ‘My bed will comfort me. My couch will ease my complaint;’ ¹⁴ then you scare me with dreams, and terrify me through visions: ¹⁵ so that my soul chooses strangling, death rather than my bones. ¹⁶ I loathe my life. I don’t want to live forever. Leave me alone, for my days are but a breath. ¹⁷ What is man, that you should magnify him, that you should set your mind on him, ¹⁸ that you should visit him every morning, and test him every moment? ¹⁹ How long will you not look away from me, nor leave me alone until I swallow down my spittle? ²⁰ If I have sinned, what do I do to you, you watcher of men? Why have you set me as a mark for you, so that I am a burden to myself? ²¹ Why do you not pardon my disobedience, and take away my iniquity? For now will I lie down in the dust. You will seek me diligently, but I will not be.”

⁵⁰ He shall reckon with him who bought him from the year that he sold himself to him to the Year of Jubilee. The price of his sale shall be according to the number of years; he shall be with him according to the time of a hired servant.

¹⁸ It shall not seem hard to you when you let him go free from you, for he has been double the value of a hired hand as he served you six years. Yahweh your God will bless you in all that you do.

⁷ but man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upward.

⁵ Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months is with you, and you have appointed his bounds that he can’t pass; ⁶ Look away from him, that he may rest, until he accomplishes, as a hireling, his day.

¹³ “Oh that you would hide me in Sheol, that you would keep me secret until your wrath is past, that you would appoint me a set time and remember me! ¹⁴ If a man dies, will he live again? I would wait all the days of my warfare, until my release should come.

⁴ “Yahweh, show me my end, what is the measure of my days. Let me know how frail I am.

⁸ There is no man who has power over the spirit to contain the spirit; neither does he have power over the day of death. There is no discharge in war; neither shall wickedness deliver those who practice it.

¹⁶ For the Lord said to me, “Within a year, as a worker bound by contract would count it, all the glory of Kedar will fail,

⁵ “Go, and tell Hezekiah, ‘Yahweh, the God of David your father, says, “I have heard your prayer. I have seen your tears. Behold, I will add fifteen years to your life.

² “Speak comfortably to Jerusalem; and call out to her that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received of Yahweh’s hand double for all her sins.”

¹ “For the Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who was the master of a household, who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. ² When he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. ³ He went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace. ⁴ He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they went their way. ⁵ Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did likewise. ⁶ About the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle. He said to them, ‘Why do you stand here all day idle?’ ⁷ “They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ “He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and you will receive whatever is right.’ ⁸ When evening had come, the lord of the vineyard said to his manager, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning from the last to the first.’ ⁹ “When those who were hired at about the eleventh hour came, they each received a denarius. ¹⁰ When the first came, they supposed that they would receive more; and they likewise each received a denarius. ¹¹ When they received it, they murmured against the master of the household, ¹² saying, ‘These last have spent one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat!’ ¹³ “But he answered one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Didn’t you agree with me for a denarius? ¹⁴ Take that which is yours, and go your way. It is my desire to give to this last just as much as to you. ¹⁵ Isn’t it lawful for me to do what I want to with what I own? Or is your eye evil, because I am good?’

⁹ Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world. ¹⁰ But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him.”

¹³ “‘You shall not oppress your neighbor, nor rob him. “‘The wages of a hired servant shall not remain with you all night until the morning.

¹⁵ In his day you shall give him his wages, neither shall the sun go down on it; for he is poor and sets his heart on it; lest he cry against you to Yahweh, and it be sin to you.

¹³¹ I opened my mouth wide and panted, for I longed for your commandments.

⁶ I spread out my hands to you. My soul thirsts for you, like a parched land. Selah.

⁴ “Prepare war against her! Arise! Let’s go up at noon. Woe to us! For the day declines, for the shadows of the evening are stretched out.

⁵ I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the perjurers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and who deprive the foreigner of justice, and don’t fear me,” says Yahweh of Armies.

⁴ Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of those who reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Armies.

⁷ But now, God, you have surely worn me out. You have made all my company desolate.

² “Oh that I were as in the months of old, as in the days when God watched over me;

⁶ I am weary with my groaning. Every night I flood my bed. I drench my couch with my tears.

⁵ Behold, you have made my days hand widths. My lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely every man stands as a breath.” Selah.

¹⁴ I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and behold, all is vanity and a chasing after wind.

⁶⁷ In the morning you will say, “I wish it were evening!” and at evening you will say, “I wish it were morning!” for the fear of your heart which you will fear, and for the sights which your eyes will see.

¹³ When I say, ‘My bed will comfort me. My couch will ease my complaint;’ ¹⁴ then you scare me with dreams, and terrify me through visions:

¹² They change the night into day, saying ‘The light is near’ in the presence of darkness.

¹⁷ In the night season my bones are pierced in me, and the pains that gnaw me take no rest.

⁴ You hold my eyelids open. I am so troubled that I can’t speak.

²³ I fade away like an evening shadow. I am shaken off like a locust.

⁶ My soul longs for the Lord more than watchmen long for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.

¹¹ “You afflicted, tossed with storms, and not comforted, behold, I will set your stones in beautiful colors, and lay your foundations with sapphires.

⁷ So Satan went out from the presence of Yahweh, and struck Job with painful sores from the sole of his foot to his head. ⁸ He took for himself a potsherd to scrape himself with, and he sat among the ashes.

³¹ yet you will plunge me in the ditch. My own clothes will abhor me.

¹⁴ if I have said to corruption, ‘You are my father;’ to the worm, ‘My mother,’ and ‘My sister,’

²⁶ After my skin is destroyed, then I will see God in my flesh,

²⁰ The womb will forget him. The worm will feed sweetly on him. He will be no more remembered. Unrighteousness will be broken as a tree.

¹⁸ My garment is disfigured by great force. It binds me about as the collar of my tunic. ¹⁹ He has cast me into the mire. I have become like dust and ashes.

⁵ My wounds are loathsome and corrupt because of my foolishness. ⁶ I am in pain and bowed down greatly. I go mourning all day long. ⁷ For my waist is filled with burning. There is no soundness in my flesh.

⁶ From the sole of the foot even to the head there is no soundness in it: wounds, welts, and open sores. They haven’t been closed, bandaged, or soothed with oil.

¹¹ Your pomp is brought down to Sheol, with the sound of your stringed instruments. Maggots are spread out under you, and worms cover you.

²⁴ “They will go out, and look at the dead bodies of the men who have transgressed against me; for their worm will not die, nor will their fire be quenched, and they will be loathsome to all mankind.”

⁴³ There you will remember your ways, and all your deeds in which you have polluted yourselves. Then you will loathe yourselves in your own sight for all your evils that you have committed.

²³ Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he didn’t give God the glory. Then he was eaten by worms and died.

¹¹ What is my strength, that I should wait? What is my end, that I should be patient?

²⁵ “Now my days are swifter than a runner. They flee away. They see no good.

¹⁵ Behold, he will kill me. I have no hope. Nevertheless, I will maintain my ways before him.

²² For when a few years have come, I will go the way of no return.

¹¹ My days are past. My plans are broken off, as are the thoughts of my heart.

¹⁵ where then is my hope? As for my hope, who will see it?

⁵ You sweep them away as they sleep. In the morning they sprout like new grass. ⁶ In the morning it sprouts and springs up. By evening, it is withered and dry.

¹¹ My days are like a long shadow. I have withered like grass.

¹⁵ As for man, his days are like grass. As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. ¹⁶ For the wind passes over it, and it is gone. Its place remembers it no more.

⁴ Man is like a breath. His days are like a shadow that passes away.

³² The wicked is brought down in his calamity, but in death, the righteous has a refuge.

¹² My dwelling is removed, and is carried away from me like a shepherd’s tent. I have rolled up my life like a weaver. He will cut me off from the loom. From day even to night you will make an end of me. ¹³ I waited patiently until morning. He breaks all my bones like a lion. From day even to night you will make an end of me.

⁶ The voice of one saying, “Cry!” One said, “What shall I cry?” “All flesh is like grass, and all its glory is like the flower of the field. ⁷ The grass withers, the flower fades, because Yahweh’s breath blows on it. Surely the people are like grass.

²⁵ “Keep your feet from being bare, and your throat from thirst. But you said, ‘It is in vain. No, for I have loved strangers, and I will go after them.’

¹² that you were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

¹¹ For the sun arises with the scorching wind and withers the grass, and the flower in it falls, and the beauty of its appearance perishes. So the rich man will also fade away in his pursuits.

¹⁴ Whereas you don’t know what your life will be like tomorrow. For what is your life? For you are a vapor that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away.

¹³ Therefore prepare your minds for action. Be sober, and set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ—

²⁴ For, “All flesh is like grass, and all of man’s glory like the flower in the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls;

³⁶ Jacob, their father, said to them, “You have bereaved me of my children! Joseph is no more, Simeon is no more, and you want to take Benjamin away. All these things are against me.”

⁸ “Remember, I beg you, the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you trespass, I will scatter you among the peoples;

⁹ Remember, I beg you, that you have fashioned me as clay. Will you bring me into dust again?

²¹ before I go where I will not return from, to the land of darkness and of the shadow of death; ²² the land dark as midnight, of the shadow of death, without any order, where the light is as midnight.’”

¹⁸ Remember this, that the enemy has mocked you, Yahweh. Foolish people have blasphemed your name.

²² Arise, God! Plead your own cause. Remember how the foolish man mocks you all day.

³⁹ He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that passes away, and doesn’t come again.

⁴⁷ Remember how short my time is, for what vanity you have created all the children of men!

⁵⁰ Remember, Lord, the reproach of your servants, how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the mighty peoples,

¹⁵ Yahweh, you know. Remember me, visit me, and avenge me of my persecutors. You are patient, so don’t take me away. Know that for your sake I have suffered reproach.

¹⁸ If he is destroyed from his place, then it will deny him, saying, ‘I have not seen you.’

²⁷ You also put my feet in the stocks, and mark all my paths. You set a bound to the soles of my feet,

³ Do you open your eyes on such a one, and bring me into judgment with you?

⁹ The eye which saw him will see him no more, neither will his place see him any more.

³⁶ But he passed away, and behold, he was not. Yes, I sought him, but he could not be found.

¹¹ When you rebuke and correct man for iniquity, you consume his wealth like a moth. Surely every man is but a breath.” Selah.

⁸ You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. ⁹ For all our days have passed away in your wrath. We bring our years to an end as a sigh.

²³ But now he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.”

¹⁴ For we must die, and are like water spilled on the ground, which can’t be gathered up again; neither does God take away life, but devises means, that he who is banished not be an outcast from him.

²¹ before I go where I will not return from, to the land of darkness and of the shadow of death;

⁸ They are high as heaven. What can you do? They are deeper than Sheol. What can you know?

¹⁰ But man dies, and is laid low. Yes, man gives up the spirit, and where is he? ¹¹ As the waters fail from the sea, and the river wastes and dries up, ¹² so man lies down and doesn’t rise. Until the heavens are no more, they will not awake, nor be roused out of their sleep.

¹⁵ Terrors have turned on me. They chase my honor as the wind. My welfare has passed away as a cloud.

¹¹ Yes, he loads the thick cloud with moisture. He spreads abroad the cloud of his lightning.

¹³ Oh spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go away and exist no more.”

¹¹ I said, “I won’t see Yah, Yah in the land of the living. I will see man no more with the inhabitants of the world.

²¹ The east wind carries him away, and he departs. It sweeps him out of his place.

²³ Men will clap their hands at him, and will hiss him out of his place.

¹⁶ For the wind passes over it, and it is gone. Its place remembers it no more.

²¹ They said to one another, “We are certainly guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us, and we wouldn’t listen. Therefore this distress has come upon us.”

¹⁰ She was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to Yahweh, weeping bitterly.

²⁷ When she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught hold of his feet. Gehazi came near to thrust her away; but the man of God said, “Leave her alone; for her soul is troubled within her; and Yahweh has hidden it from me, and has not told me.” ²⁸ Then she said, “Did I ask you for a son, my lord? Didn’t I say, ‘Do not deceive me’?”

²⁶ Do you intend to reprove words, since the speeches of one who is desperate are as wind?

¹ “My soul is weary of my life. I will give free course to my complaint. I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

¹⁵ If I am wicked, woe to me. If I am righteous, I still will not lift up my head, being filled with disgrace, and conscious of my affliction.

¹³ “Be silent! Leave me alone, that I may speak. Let come on me what will.

⁶ “Though I speak, my grief is not subsided. Though I forbear, what am I eased?

³ Allow me, and I also will speak; After I have spoken, mock on. ⁴ As for me, is my complaint to man? Why shouldn’t I be impatient?

²⁵ Another dies in bitterness of soul, and never tastes of good.

³ My heart was hot within me. While I meditated, the fire burned. I spoke with my tongue:

⁹ I have proclaimed glad news of righteousness in the great assembly. Behold, I will not seal my lips, Yahweh, you know.

¹⁵ What will I say? He has both spoken to me, and himself has done it. I will walk carefully all my years because of the anguish of my soul.

¹⁷ Behold, for peace I had great anguish, but you have in love for my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption; for you have cast all my sins behind your back.

³⁷ He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and severely troubled. ³⁸ Then he said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here, and watch with me.”

⁴⁴ Being in agony he prayed more earnestly. His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.

⁴ For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears, not that you should be made to grieve, but that you might know the love that I have so abundantly for you.

¹⁷ What is man, that you should magnify him, that you should set your mind on him,

⁶ What were its foundations fastened on? Or who laid its cornerstone, ⁷ when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? ⁸ “Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke out of the womb, ⁹ when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness, ¹⁰ marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors, ¹¹ and said, ‘You may come here, but no further. Your proud waves shall be stopped here’?

¹ “Can you draw out Leviathan with a fish hook, or press down his tongue with a cord? ² Can you put a rope into his nose, or pierce his jaw through with a hook? ³ Will he make many petitions to you, or will he speak soft words to you? ⁴ Will he make a covenant with you, that you should take him for a servant forever? ⁵ Will you play with him as with a bird? Or will you bind him for your girls? ⁶ Will traders barter for him? Will they part him among the merchants? ⁷ Can you fill his skin with barbed irons, or his head with fish spears? ⁸ Lay your hand on him. Remember the battle, and do so no more. ⁹ Behold, the hope of him is in vain. Won’t one be cast down even at the sight of him? ¹⁰ None is so fierce that he dare stir him up. Who then is he who can stand before me? ¹¹ Who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Everything under the heavens is mine. ¹² “I will not keep silence concerning his limbs, nor his mighty strength, nor his goodly frame. ¹³ Who can strip off his outer garment? Who will come within his jaws? ¹⁴ Who can open the doors of his face? Around his teeth is terror. ¹⁵ Strong scales are his pride, shut up together with a close seal. ¹⁶ One is so near to another, that no air can come between them. ¹⁷ They are joined to one another. They stick together, so that they can’t be pulled apart. ¹⁸ His sneezing flashes out light. His eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. ¹⁹ Out of his mouth go burning torches. Sparks of fire leap out. ²⁰ Out of his nostrils a smoke goes, as of a boiling pot over a fire of reeds. ²¹ His breath kindles coals. A flame goes out of his mouth. ²² There is strength in his neck. Terror dances before him. ²³ The flakes of his flesh are joined together. They are firm on him. They can’t be moved. ²⁴ His heart is as firm as a stone, yes, firm as the lower millstone. ²⁵ When he raises himself up, the mighty are afraid. They retreat before his thrashing. ²⁶ If one attacks him with the sword, it can’t prevail; nor the spear, the dart, nor the pointed shaft. ²⁷ He counts iron as straw; and bronze as rotten wood. ²⁸ The arrow can’t make him flee. Sling stones are like chaff to him. ²⁹ Clubs are counted as stubble. He laughs at the rushing of the javelin. ³⁰ His undersides are like sharp potsherds, leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge. ³¹ He makes the deep to boil like a pot. He makes the sea like a pot of ointment. ³² He makes a path shine after him. One would think the deep had white hair. ³³ On earth there is not his equal, that is made without fear. ³⁴ He sees everything that is high. He is king over all the sons of pride.”

⁷ He has walled me about, so that I can’t go out. He has made my chain heavy.

² ‘Son of man, take up a lamentation over Pharaoh king of Egypt, and tell him, “You were likened to a young lion of the nations; yet you are as a monster in the seas. You broke out with your rivers, and troubled the waters with your feet, and fouled their rivers.” ³ The Lord Yahweh says: “I will spread out my net on you with a company of many peoples; and they will bring you up in my net.

³ so I am made to possess months of misery, wearisome nights are appointed to me. ⁴ When I lie down, I say, ‘When will I arise, and the night be gone?’ I toss and turn until the dawning of the day.

²⁷ If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint, I will put off my sad face, and cheer up;’ ²⁸ I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that you will not hold me innocent.

⁵ They both dreamed a dream, each man his dream, in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the cup bearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were bound in the prison. ⁶ Joseph came in to them in the morning, and saw them, and saw that they were sad. ⁷ He asked Pharaoh’s officers who were with him in custody in his master’s house, saying, “Why do you look so sad today?”

⁸ In the morning, his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called for all of Egypt’s magicians and wise men. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but there was no one who could interpret them to Pharaoh.

¹³ When Gideon had come, behold, there was a man telling a dream to his fellow. He said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream; and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian, came to the tent, and struck it so that it fell, and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.” ¹⁴ His fellow answered, “This is nothing other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel. God has delivered Midian into his hand, with all the army.”

¹ In the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams; and his spirit was troubled, and his sleep went from him.

¹⁹ While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of him.”

²³ When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey, arose, and went home, to his city, and set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the tomb of his father.

⁵ He threw down the pieces of silver in the sanctuary, and departed. He went away and hanged himself.

⁴⁶ Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth. If Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these, of the daughters of the land, what good will my life do me?”

⁴ But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree. Then he requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is enough. Now, O Yahweh, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.”

²⁰ “Why is light given to him who is in misery, life to the bitter in soul, ²¹ Who long for death, but it doesn’t come; and dig for it more than for hidden treasures, ²² who rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?

⁹ even that it would please God to crush me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!

²¹ I am blameless. I don’t respect myself. I despise my life.

²⁰ Aren’t my days few? Stop! Leave me alone, that I may find a little comfort,

⁶ Look away from him, that he may rest, until he accomplishes, as a hireling, his day.

¹⁰ Remove your scourge away from me. I am overcome by the blow of your hand.

⁹ Surely men of low degree are just a breath, and men of high degree are a lie. In the balances they will go up. They are together lighter than a breath.

³³ Therefore he consumed their days in vanity, and their years in terror.

¹¹ For there are many words that create vanity. What does that profit man? ¹² For who knows what is good for man in life, all the days of his vain life which he spends like a shadow? For who can tell a man what will be after him under the sun?

³ Therefore now, Yahweh, take, I beg you, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.”

⁸ When the sun arose, God prepared a sultry east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah’s head, so that he fainted, and requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is better for me to die than to live.”

¹⁴ Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom do you pursue? A dead dog? A flea?

¹² Am I a sea, or a sea monster, that you put a guard over me?

¹⁴ If he set his heart on himself, if he gathered to himself his spirit and his breath, ¹⁵ all flesh would perish together, and man would turn again to dust.

⁴ what is man, that you think of him? What is the son of man, that you care for him?

³ Yahweh, what is man, that you care for him? Or the son of man, that you think of him?

⁶ But one has somewhere testified, saying, “What is man, that you think of him? Or the son of man, that you care for him?

¹ After these things, God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” He said, “Here I am.”

⁵ you shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me,

³⁴ Now go, lead the people to the place of which I have spoken to you. Behold, my angel shall go before you. Nevertheless, in the day when I punish, I will punish them for their sin.”

¹⁶ who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers didn’t know, that he might humble you, and that he might prove you, to do you good at your latter end;

¹⁴ The dead shall not live. The departed spirits shall not rise. Therefore you have visited and destroyed them, and caused all memory of them to perish.

⁷ Therefore Yahweh of Armies says, “Behold, I will melt them and test them; for how should I deal with the daughter of my people?

¹⁰ Many will purify themselves, and make themselves white, and be refined; but the wicked will do wickedly; and none of the wicked will understand; but those who are wise will understand.

⁹ I will bring the third part into the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will test them like gold is tested. They will call on my name, and I will hear them. I will say, ‘It is my people;’ and they will say, ‘Yahweh is my God.’”

⁷ that the proof of your faith, which is more precious than gold that perishes even though it is tested by fire, may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ—

¹⁸ He will not allow me to catch my breath, but fills me with bitterness.

³ My soul is also in great anguish. But you, Yahweh—how long?

¹ For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David. How long, Yahweh? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? ² How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart every day? How long shall my enemy triumph over me? ³ Behold, and answer me, Yahweh, my God. Give light to my eyes, lest I sleep in death;

³ Yahweh, how long will the wicked, how long will the wicked triumph?

¹⁰ They cried with a loud voice, saying, “How long, Master, the holy and true, until you judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?”

⁶ You are Yahweh, even you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their army, the earth and all things that are on it, the seas and all that is in them, and you preserve them all. The army of heaven worships you.

²⁴ For my sighing comes before I eat. My groanings are poured out like water.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me. My spirit drinks up their poison. The terrors of God set themselves in array against me.

¹¹ “Therefore I will not keep silent. I will speak in the anguish of my spirit. I will complain in the bitterness of my soul. ¹² Am I a sea, or a sea monster, that you put a guard over me?

²⁹ I will be condemned. Why then do I labor in vain? ³⁰ If I wash myself with snow, and cleanse my hands with lye, ³¹ yet you will plunge me in the ditch. My own clothes will abhor me.

²⁶ For you write bitter things against me, and make me inherit the iniquities of my youth:

¹⁶ But now you count my steps. Don’t you watch over my sin?

¹² I was at ease, and he broke me apart. Yes, he has taken me by the neck, and dashed me to pieces. He has also set me up for his target. ¹³ His archers surround me. He splits my kidneys apart, and does not spare. He pours out my bile on the ground. ¹⁴ He breaks me with breach on breach. He runs at me like a giant.

⁵ Isn’t your wickedness great? Neither is there any end to your iniquities.

³³ if like Adam I have covered my transgressions, by hiding my iniquity in my heart,

⁹ ‘I am clean, without disobedience. I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me.

²⁷ He sings before men, and says, ‘I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it didn’t profit me.

⁶ If you have sinned, what effect do you have against him? If your transgressions are multiplied, what do you do to him?

¹² For you will make them turn their back, when you aim drawn bows at their face.

⁶ Your righteousness is like the mountains of God. Your judgments are like a great deep. Yahweh, you preserve man and animal.

⁴ Yahweh God of Armies, how long will you be angry against the prayer of your people?

¹² He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.

¹⁰ David’s heart struck him after he had counted the people. David said to Yahweh, “I have sinned greatly in that which I have done. But now, Yahweh, put away, I beg you, the iniquity of your servant; for I have done very foolishly.”

¹³ For now I should have lain down and been quiet. I should have slept, then I would have been at rest,

⁸ The eye of him who sees me will see me no more. Your eyes will be on me, but I will not be.

¹⁴ if I sin, then you mark me. You will not acquit me from my iniquity.

²³ How many are my iniquities and sins? Make me know my disobedience and my sin. ²⁴ Why do you hide your face, and consider me your enemy?

³² Yet he will be borne to the grave. Men will keep watch over the tomb. ³³ The clods of the valley will be sweet to him. All men will draw after him, as there were innumerable before him.

¹⁵ As for man, his days are like grass. As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.

⁷ and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

¹⁹ Your dead shall live. My dead bodies shall arise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust; for your dew is like the dew of herbs, and the earth will cast out the departed spirits.

⁹ Don’t be furious, Yahweh. Don’t remember iniquity forever. Look and see, we beg you, we are all your people.

⁴² “We have transgressed and have rebelled. You have not pardoned. ⁴³ “You have covered us with anger and pursued us. You have killed. You have not pitied. ⁴⁴ You have covered yourself with a cloud, so that no prayer can pass through.

²⁰ Why do you forget us forever, and forsake us for so long a time? ²¹ Turn us to yourself, Yahweh, and we will be turned. Renew our days as of old. ²² But you have utterly rejected us. You are very angry against us.

² Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

² Take words with you, and return to Yahweh. Tell him, “Forgive all our sins, and accept that which is good: so we offer our lips like bulls.

¹⁸ Who is a God like you, who pardons iniquity, and passes over the disobedience of the remnant of his heritage? He doesn’t retain his anger forever, because he delights in loving kindness. ¹⁹ He will again have compassion on us. He will tread our iniquities under foot; and you will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.

²⁹ The next day, he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

¹⁴ who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify for himself a people for his own possession, zealous for good works.

⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

⁵ You know that he was revealed to take away our sins, and no sin is in him.
