¹ “Can you draw out Leviathan with a fish hook, or press down his tongue with a cord? ² Can you put a rope into his nose, or pierce his jaw through with a hook? ³ Will he make many petitions to you, or will he speak soft words to you? ⁴ Will he make a covenant with you, that you should take him for a servant forever? ⁵ Will you play with him as with a bird? Or will you bind him for your girls? ⁶ Will traders barter for him? Will they part him among the merchants? ⁷ Can you fill his skin with barbed irons, or his head with fish spears? ⁸ Lay your hand on him. Remember the battle, and do so no more. ⁹ Behold, the hope of him is in vain. Won’t one be cast down even at the sight of him? ¹⁰ None is so fierce that he dare stir him up. Who then is he who can stand before me? ¹¹ Who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Everything under the heavens is mine. ¹² “I will not keep silence concerning his limbs, nor his mighty strength, nor his goodly frame. ¹³ Who can strip off his outer garment? Who will come within his jaws? ¹⁴ Who can open the doors of his face? Around his teeth is terror. ¹⁵ Strong scales are his pride, shut up together with a close seal. ¹⁶ One is so near to another, that no air can come between them. ¹⁷ They are joined to one another. They stick together, so that they can’t be pulled apart. ¹⁸ His sneezing flashes out light. His eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. ¹⁹ Out of his mouth go burning torches. Sparks of fire leap out. ²⁰ Out of his nostrils a smoke goes, as of a boiling pot over a fire of reeds. ²¹ His breath kindles coals. A flame goes out of his mouth. ²² There is strength in his neck. Terror dances before him. ²³ The flakes of his flesh are joined together. They are firm on him. They can’t be moved. ²⁴ His heart is as firm as a stone, yes, firm as the lower millstone. ²⁵ When he raises himself up, the mighty are afraid. They retreat before his thrashing. ²⁶ If one attacks him with the sword, it can’t prevail; nor the spear, the dart, nor the pointed shaft. ²⁷ He counts iron as straw; and bronze as rotten wood. ²⁸ The arrow can’t make him flee. Sling stones are like chaff to him. ²⁹ Clubs are counted as stubble. He laughs at the rushing of the javelin. ³⁰ His undersides are like sharp potsherds, leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge. ³¹ He makes the deep to boil like a pot. He makes the sea like a pot of ointment. ³² He makes a path shine after him. One would think the deep had white hair. ³³ On earth there is not his equal, that is made without fear. ³⁴ He sees everything that is high. He is king over all the sons of pride.”

⁸ Let them curse it who curse the day, who are ready to rouse up leviathan.

¹⁴ You broke the heads of Leviathan in pieces. You gave him as food to people and desert creatures.

²⁶ There the ships go, and leviathan, whom you formed to play there.

¹ In that day, Yahweh with his hard and great and strong sword will punish leviathan, the fleeing serpent, and leviathan the twisted serpent; and he will kill the dragon that is in the sea.

²⁸ Because of your raging against me, and because your arrogance has come up into my ears, therefore I will put my hook in your nose, and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came.’

He is my brother.” ³³ Now the men observed diligently, and hurried to take this phrase; and they said, “Your brother Ben Hadad.” Then he said, “Go, bring him.” Then Ben Hadad came out to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot. ³⁴ Ben Hadad said to him, “The cities which my father took from your father I will restore. You shall make streets for yourself in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria.” “I”, said Ahab, “will let you go with this covenant.” So he made a covenant with him, and let him go.

⁵ For you have made him a little lower than the angels, and crowned him with glory and honor. ⁶ You make him ruler over the works of your hands. You have put all things under his feet:

²⁵ When their hearts were merry, they said, “Call for Samson, that he may entertain us.” They called for Samson out of the prison; and he performed before them. They set him between the pillars; ²⁶ and Samson said to the boy who held him by the hand, “Allow me to feel the pillars on which the house rests, that I may lean on them.” ²⁷ Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were on the roof about three thousand men and women, who saw while Samson performed. ²⁸ Samson called to Yahweh, and said, “Lord Yahweh, remember me, please, and strengthen me, please, only this once, God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.” ²⁹ Samson took hold of the two middle pillars on which the house rested and leaned on them, the one with his right hand and the other with his left. ³⁰ Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” He bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell on the lords, and on all the people who were in it. So the dead that he killed at his death were more than those who he killed in his life.

¹¹ Yahweh said to Samuel, “Behold, I will do a thing in Israel at which both the ears of everyone who hears it will tingle.

¹⁹ As often as it passes through, it will seize you; for morning by morning it will pass through, by day and by night; and it will be nothing but terror to understand the message.”

¹¹ There will be great earthquakes, famines, and plagues in various places. There will be terrors and great signs from heaven.

⁹ Judah is a lion’s cub. From the prey, my son, you have gone up. He stooped down, he crouched as a lion, as a lioness. Who will rouse him up?

⁹ He couched, he lay down as a lion, as a lioness; who shall rouse him up? Everyone who blesses you is blessed. Everyone who curses you is cursed.”

⁴ God is wise in heart, and mighty in strength. Who has hardened himself against him and prospered?

⁹ Or do you have an arm like God? Can you thunder with a voice like him?

¹¹ Serve Yahweh with fear, and rejoice with trembling. ¹² Give sincere homage to the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish on the way, for his wrath will soon be kindled. Blessed are all those who take refuge in him.

⁵ “If you have run with the footmen, and they have wearied you, then how can you contend with horses? Though in a land of peace you are secure, yet how will you do in the pride of the Jordan?

¹⁷ Then he said to me, “Have you seen this, son of man? Is it a light thing to the house of Judah that they commit the abominations which they commit here? For they have filled the land with violence, and have turned again to provoke me to anger. Behold, they put the branch to their nose. ¹⁸ Therefore I will also deal in wrath. My eye won’t spare, neither will I have pity. Though they cry in my ears with a loud voice, yet I will not hear them.”

²² Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?

⁵ Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice, and keep my covenant, then you shall be my own possession from among all peoples; for all the earth is mine;

¹⁴ Behold, to Yahweh your God belongs heaven, the heaven of heavens, and the earth, with all that is therein.

¹¹ Yours, Yahweh, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty! For all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, Yahweh, and you are exalted as head above all. ¹² Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all! In your hand is power and might! It is in your hand to make great, and to give strength to all! ¹³ Now therefore, our God, we thank you, and praise your glorious name. ¹⁴ But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly as this? For all things come from you, and we have given you of your own.

² “Can a man be profitable to God? Surely he who is wise is profitable to himself. ³ Is it any pleasure to the Almighty that you are righteous? Or does it benefit him that you make your ways perfect?

⁷ If you are righteous, what do you give him? Or what does he receive from your hand?

³ For you meet him with the blessings of goodness. You set a crown of fine gold on his head.

¹ A Psalm by David. The earth is Yahweh’s, with its fullness; the world, and those who dwell in it.

¹² If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.

¹⁶ The heavens are Yahweh’s heavens, but he has given the earth to the children of men.

³⁵ “Or who has first given to him, and it will be repaid to him again?”

²⁶ for “the earth is the Lord’s, and its fullness.”

²⁸ But if anyone says to you, “This was offered to idols,” don’t eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for the sake of conscience. For “the earth is the Lord’s, with all its fullness.”

²⁵ God made the animals of the earth after their kind, and the livestock after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind. God saw that it was good.

⁹ Don’t be like the horse, or like the mule, which have no understanding, who are controlled by bit and bridle, or else they will not come near to you.

³ Indeed, we put bits into the horses’ mouths so that they may obey us, and we guide their whole body.

¹⁰ marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors,

⁴ My soul is among lions. I lie among those who are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

⁶ Break their teeth, God, in their mouth. Break out the great teeth of the young lions, Yahweh.

¹⁴ There is a generation whose teeth are like swords, and their jaws like knives, to devour the poor from the earth, and the needy from among men.

⁴ and the doors shall be shut in the street; when the sound of the grinding is low, and one shall rise up at the voice of a bird, and all the daughters of music shall be brought low;

⁷ “After this I saw in the night visions, and, behold, there was a fourth animal, awesome and powerful, and exceedingly strong. It had great iron teeth. It devoured and broke in pieces, and stamped the residue with its feet. It was different from all the animals that were before it. It had ten horns.

²³ Yahweh says, “Don’t let the wise man glory in his wisdom. Don’t let the mighty man glory in his might. Don’t let the rich man glory in his riches.

² I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the book, and to break its seals?” ³ No one in heaven above, or on the earth, or under the earth, was able to open the book or to look in it.

⁵ One of the elders said to me, “Don’t weep. Behold, the Lion who is of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome: he who opens the book and its seven seals.”

⁹ Let the stars of its twilight be dark. Let it look for light, but have none, neither let it see the eyelids of the morning,

¹⁴ His head and his hair were white as white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire.

⁸ Smoke went out of his nostrils. Consuming fire came out of his mouth. Coals were kindled by it.

¹³ Yahweh’s word came to me the second time, saying, “What do you see?” I said, “I see a boiling cauldron; and it is tipping away from the north.” ¹⁴ Then Yahweh said to me, “Out of the north, evil will break out on all the inhabitants of the land.

¹² At the brightness before him his thick clouds passed, hailstones and coals of fire.

³³ For his burning place has long been ready. Yes, for the king it is prepared. He has made its pyre deep and large with fire and much wood. Yahweh’s breath, like a stream of sulfur, kindles it.

⁵ Plague went before him, and pestilence followed his feet.

¹⁹ “Have you given the horse might? Have you clothed his neck with a quivering mane?

¹⁶ Look now, his strength is in his thighs. His force is in the muscles of his belly.

¹⁴ I will ransom them from the power of Sheol. I will redeem them from death! Death, where are your plagues? Sheol, where is your destruction? “Compassion will be hidden from my eyes.

⁵⁵ “Death, where is your sting? Hades, where is your victory?” ⁵⁶ The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. ⁵⁷ But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

⁴ Because I knew that you are obstinate, and your neck is an iron sinew, and your brow bronze;

³ O Yahweh, don’t your eyes look on truth? You have stricken them, but they were not grieved. You have consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction. They have made their faces harder than a rock. They have refused to return.

¹² Yes, they made their hearts as hard as flint, lest they might hear the law, and the words which Yahweh of Armies had sent by his Spirit by the former prophets. Therefore great wrath came from Yahweh of Armies.

²⁸ Then they cry to Yahweh in their trouble, and he brings them out of their distress.

⁴ But Yahweh sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty storm on the sea, so that the ship was likely to break up. ⁵ Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship, and he was laying down, and was fast asleep. ⁶ So the ship master came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God! Maybe your God will notice us, so that we won’t perish.”

²¹ He paws in the valley, and rejoices in his strength. He goes out to meet the armed men. ²² He mocks at fear, and is not dismayed, neither does he turn back from the sword. ²³ The quiver rattles against him, the flashing spear and the javelin. ²⁴ He eats up the ground with fierceness and rage, neither does he stand still at the sound of the trumpet.

⁷ He scorns the tumult of the city, neither does he hear the shouting of the driver.

¹⁰ Yes, he scoffs at kings, and princes are a derision to him. He laughs at every stronghold, for he builds up an earthen ramp, and takes it.

¹⁴ Uzziah prepared for them, even for all the army, shields, spears, helmets, coats of mail, bows, and stones for slinging.

¹⁵ Behold, I have made you into a new sharp threshing instrument with teeth. You will thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and will make the hills like chaff.

² The earth was formless and empty. Darkness was on the surface of the deep and God’s Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters.

¹⁵ and let them be for lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth;” and it was so.

¹⁵ but you will go to your fathers in peace. You will be buried at a good old age.

⁸ Abraham gave up his spirit, and died at a good old age, an old man, and full of years, and was gathered to his people.

³⁸ He said, “My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he only is left. If harm happens to him along the way in which you go, then you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.”

¹⁴ The deep says, ‘It isn’t in me.’ The sea says, ‘It isn’t with me.’

¹⁶ “Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep?

³⁰ The waters become hard like stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen.

³¹ Gray hair is a crown of glory. It is attained by a life of righteousness.

²⁹ The glory of young men is their strength. The splendor of old men is their gray hair.

¹⁹ He is the chief of the ways of God. He who made him gives him his sword.

² Pharaoh said, “Who is Yahweh, that I should listen to his voice to let Israel go? I don’t know Yahweh, and moreover I will not let Israel go.”

¹² He stirs up the sea with his power, and by his understanding he strikes through Rahab.

⁸ The proud animals have not trodden it, nor has the fierce lion passed by there.

⁶ Therefore pride is like a chain around their neck. Violence covers them like a garment.

¹⁰ Therefore their people return to them, and they drink up waters of abundance.

¹ Woe to the crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fertile valley of those who are overcome with wine!

³ Speak and say, ‘The Lord Yahweh says: “Behold, I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great monster that lies in the middle of his rivers, that has said, ‘My river is my own, and I have made it for myself.’

¹ A great sign was seen in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. ² She was with child. She cried out in pain, laboring to give birth. ³ Another sign was seen in heaven. Behold, a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads seven crowns.

² The beast which I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like those of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority.

² He seized the dragon, the old serpent, which is the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole inhabited earth, and bound him for a thousand years, ³ and cast him into the abyss, and shut it, and sealed it over him, that he should deceive the nations no more, until the thousand years were finished. After this, he must be freed for a short time.
