¹ Then Naomi her mother-in-law said to her: "My daughter, Should I try to find a secure home for you where you will be well treated? ² Now isn’t Boaz our kinsman, with whose maidens you were? Behold, he will be winnowing barley tonight on the threshing floor. ³ "Wash and perfume yourself and put on your best clothes. Go down to the floor. Make yourself known to the man after he is done eating and drinking. ⁴ When he lies down, be sure to notice where he is resting. Then go over, uncover his feet, and lie down. He'll tell you what to do." ⁵ Ruth said: "All that you say to me I will do." ⁶ She went down to the threshing floor, and did everything that her mother-in-law told her. ⁷ After Boaz ate and drank, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of barley. Ruth approached quietly, uncovered his feet, and lay down. ⁸ In the middle of the night, Boaz was startled awake and turned over in surprise to see a woman lying at his feet. ⁹ He said: "Who are you?" She answered: "I am your servant Ruth. Spread your garment over me, for you are my kinsman." ¹⁰ He said: "You are blessed of the LORD, my daughter: for this kindness is greater than what you showed earlier. You have not pursued younger men, whether poor or rich. ¹¹ And now, my daughter, do not fear. I will do to you all that you ask. For all the city of my people knows that you are a woman of virtue. ¹² And now it is true that I am thy near kinsman: yet there is a kinsman nearer than I. ¹³ Stay tonight, and in the morning, if he wants to redeem you, good; but if he is not willing to redeem, then as the LORD lives, I will redeem you. Lie down until the morning." ¹⁴ So she lay at his feet until morning and got up before anyone could recognize each other. And he said, "It must not be known that you came to the threshing floor." ¹⁵ Also he said, Bring the veil that you have on you, and hold it. And when she held it, he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her: and she went into the city. ¹⁶ When Ruth returned to her mother-in-law, Naomi asked her, "How did it go, my daughter?" Then she related everything that the man had done for her. ¹⁷ Ruth also said, "He gave me these six units of barley and told me, 'Don't go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.'" ¹⁸ Then she said, “Wait, my daughter, until you know what will happen; for the man will not rest until he has settled this today.”

¹⁴ "Remember me when things go well for you. Please do me a favor. Mention me to Pharaoh, and get me out of this prison.

⁴⁰ You shall keep his statutes and his commandments which I command you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which the LORD your God gives you for all time.

⁹ The Lord grant, that you may find rest, each in the house of her husband. So she kissed them, and they wept aloud,

² for you eat the labor of your palms; blithed - and good with you

¹⁵ Do you become a king because you are competing in cedar? Did not your father eat and drink and do justice and righteousness? Then it was well with him. ¹⁶ He pled the cause of the afflicted and needy. Then it was well. "Is that not what it means to know me?" Says the LORD.

³⁶ If a man thinks he is not behaving properly toward his virgin, and if his passion is so strong that he feels he ought to marry her, let him do what he wants; he isn't sinning. Let them get married.

⁸ If any one does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his own family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

¹⁴ So I would have younger widows marry, bear children, manage their homes, and give the enemy no occasion for reproach.

⁵ "When brothers live together and one of them dies without a son the wife of the deceased shall not marry outside the family to a strange man. Her husband's brother shall marry her and perform the duty of a husband's brother to her. ⁶ "The firstborn son she bears will assume the name of the dead brother. That way his name will not be blotted out from Israel. ⁷ If the man doesn't want to take his brother's wife, then she shall go up to the gate to the elders and say, My husband's brother refuses to raise up to his brother a name in Israel; he will not perform the duty of a husband's brother to me. ⁸ Then the elders of his town shall summon him and speak to him, and if he persists and says, 'I do not desire to marry her' ⁹ then his brother's wife shall come to him in the presence of the elders and loose his shoe from off his foot, spit in his face, and say, So shall it be done to the man who does not build up his brother's house. ¹⁰ And his name shall be called in Israel, the house of the unshod.

¹ Now Naomi had a relative of her husband, a prominent rich man from the clan of Elimelech, whose name was Boaz.

⁸ Then Boaz said to Ruth, Listen, my daughter: Don't go to glean in another field, and don't go away from here, but stay here close to my maidens.

²⁰ Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, "Blessed be he of the LORD, who has not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead." Naomi said to her, "The man is a close relative to us, one of our near kinsmen." ²¹ And Ruth the Moabiyth says, He says to me also, Stick by my lads until they finish all my harvest. ²² And Noomiy says to Ruth her daughter in law, It is good, my daughter, to go with his lasses, so that they not meet you in any other field. ²³ So she stayed close with the maidservants of Boaz to glean until the end of the barley harvest and wheat harvest. And she lived with her mother-in-law.

¹¹ For he who makes holy and they who are made holy are all of one. For this cause he is not ashamed to call them brothers, ¹² and say, "I will tell your name to my brothers, In the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise"; ¹³ And again, "I will put my trust in him." And again, "Here am I, and the children God has given me." ¹⁴ Therefore, since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity, so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death, that is, the devil,

² Joab sent someone to Tekoa to get a wise woman from there. He told her: "Please act like a mourner. Dress in mourning clothes. Do not use any cosmetic lotions. Act like a woman who has been mourning for the dead for a long time.

¹ On the third day, Esther put on her royal attire and stood in the inner courtyard of the palace in front of the king's quarters. The king was sitting on his royal throne in the throne room, opposite the entrance to the building.

¹⁵ and wine that gladdens the heart of man and oil to make his face to shine and bread that strengthens man's heart.

⁸ Always be clothed in white garments, and never let your head lack oil!

¹⁷ But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,

²² Avoid every kind of evil.

¹ Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

¹² "Honor your father and your mother, so that your days can be long on the land that the LORD your God is giving you.

⁸ My son, listen to your father's instruction, and do not forsake your mother's teaching:

⁵ His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you.

¹⁴ You are my friends, if you do what I command you.

³⁴ And portions were taken unto them from before him; but Benjamin's portion was five times so much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him.

²⁵ When their hearts were merry they said, Call for Samson so that he can entertain us. They called Samson out of the prison, and he performed before them. They set him between the pillars,

⁶ The two men sat down and ate and drank together. Then the woman's father told him: "Spend the night and enjoy yourself."

⁹ When the man, his concubine and his servant got up to leave, his father-in-law, the girl's father, said to him, Look now, it's nearly evening; please stay all night. Stay here and enjoy yourself, and tomorrow set off early and go home.

²² As they were enjoying themselves the wicked men of the city surrounded the house, beating on the door; they said to the owner of the house, the old man, Bring out the man who came into your house, that we may have sex with him!

²⁸ Absalom commanded his servants saying, Mark now, when Amnon's heart is merry with wine; and when I tell you, 'Strike Amnon', then kill him. Don't be afraid. Haven't I commanded you? Be courageous, and be valiant!

⁷ And Jezebel his wife said to him, Do you now so act as king over Israel? Rise up, and eat bread, and be yourself! and I will give to you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.

¹⁰ On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he said to Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, seven of the eunuchs attending King Ahasuerus,

²⁴ There is nothing better for a man than to eat and drink, and delight in his work. This also I saw was from the hand of God.

¹² I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice, and to do good as long as they live. ¹³ And also every man shall eat and drink, and see the good in all his labor; it is the gift of God.

¹⁵ So I recommend enjoyment. For there is nothing better for man under the sun than to eat and to drink and to rejoice. This will accompany him in his toil the days of his life that God gives to him under the sun.

⁷ Go, eat your bread with mirth, and drink your wine with a joyful heart; for now God has favorably accepted your works.

¹⁹ A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh life merry; but money answereth everything.

³¹ So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.

¹⁸ Do not get drunk with wine, which is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,

¹⁰ Then she bowed down on her face to the earth, and said to him: "Why have I found favor in your eyes? For you give me attention and I am a foreigner." ¹¹ Boaz answered her, “I have been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, and how you have left your father, your mother, and the land of your birth, and have come to a people that you didn’t know before. ¹² May the LORD repay your work, and a full reward be given you from the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge." ¹³ And she said, "May I find favor in your eyes, my lord, for you have comforted me and have spoken kindly to your servant, and I am not one of your servants."

²⁰ Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, "Blessed be he of the LORD, who has not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead." Naomi said to her, "The man is a close relative to us, one of our near kinsmen."

¹² And now it is true that I am thy near kinsman: yet there is a kinsman nearer than I.

⁴¹ She got up and bowed down with her face to the ground and said, "Here is your female servant, as a slave to wash the feet of my lord's servants."

⁸ And I passed by you, and I looked on you, and, behold, your time was the time of love. And I spread My skirt over you and covered your nakedness. And I swore to you and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Sovereign LORD. And you became Mine.

¹¹ For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

⁸ Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, "Go, return each of you to her mother's house. May the LORD deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead, and with me.

⁴ Now when Boaz arrived from Bethlehem, he said to the harvesters, "The LORD be with you." "May the LORD bless you!" they replied.

⁴ Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. ⁵ It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no account of wrongs.

⁴ A worthy woman is the crown of her husband, but a disgraceful wife is as rottenness in his bones.

¹⁰ A woman of valour who can find? for her price is far above rubies.

²⁹ "Many women do noble things, but you excel them all." ³⁰ Charm is deceit and beauty is vain; but a woman who fears the LORD shall be praised. ³¹ Give her of the fruit of her hands: and let her works praise her in the gates.

¹ Now Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there. Behold, the near kinsman of whom Boaz spoke came by. Boaz said to him, “Come over here, friend, and sit down!” He came over, and sat down.

¹² In everything, then, do to others as you would have them do to you. For this is the essence of the Law and the prophets.

⁶ that no one trespass and defraud his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all such behavior, as, indeed, we have already told you and warned you.

⁵ Then Boaz said, "On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi and from Ruth the Moabitess, you must also aquire the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead on his inheritance."

² -- and thou shalt in truth, in justice, and in righteousness swear, [As] the LORD liveth! and the nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory.

²⁴ “Teacher,” they said, “Moses declared that if a man dies without having children, his brother is to marry the widow and raise up offspring for him. ²⁵ Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his widow to his brother. ²⁶ The same thing happened to the second and third brothers, down to the seventh. ²⁷ Finally, the woman died, too.

²³ I call God as my witness that it was in order to spare you that I did not return to Corinth.

¹⁶ Men swear by someone greater than themselves, and their oath serves as a confirmation to end all argument.

¹ A good name is better than fine perfume; and the day of death better than the day of one's birth.

¹⁷ Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Carefully consider what is right in the eyes of everybody.

¹⁶ Do not allow what you consider good, then, to be spoken of as evil.

³² Do not become a stumbling block, whether to Jews or Greeks or the church of God,

²¹ For we are taking great care to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord, but also in the eyes of men.

¹² Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles that, though they slander you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us.

⁸ But the noble thinks noble things; and by noble things he shall stand.

¹⁰ Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all men, especially to those who belong to the household of faith.

³ Trust in the LORD, and do good. Dwell in the land, and enjoy safe pasture. ⁴ Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. ⁵ Commit your way to the LORD. Trust also in him, and he will do this:

¹⁶ Therefore the Sovereign LORD says this: "Look! I am laying a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, a founded foundation: 'The one who trusts will not panic.'

⁷ For Egypt helps in vain, and to no purpose. Therefore I have called her Rahab who sits still.
