¹³ Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit; the venom of vipers is on their lips;

³³ Their wine is the venom of serpents, a poisonous cobra.

¹⁴ yet his food will turn sour in his stomach; it will become the venom of serpents within him. ¹⁵ "He will spit out the riches he swallowed. God will make his stomach vomit them up. ¹⁶ "He will suck the poison of serpents. The fangs of an adder (cobra) will kill him.

⁹ For there is not anything reliable in his mouth; their inner part is destruction. Their throat is an open grave; with their tongue they speak deceit.

³ May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that boasts, ⁴ They say: "We will overcome with our tongues. With lips such as ours, who can be our master?"

³ The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit. He has ceased to be wise and to do good.

² Your tongue devises woes, Like a honed razor, you who practice deceit."

⁴ My soul is among lions; I lie among those on fire, the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

³ They sharpen their tongue as sharp as a snake's; the venom of a viper is under their lips. Selah

³ For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity. Your lips have spoken lies. Your tongue mutters wickedness.

¹⁶ "Their quiver is like an open grave. All of them are mighty men.

³ They use their tongues like a bow. Lies rather than truth fly throughout the land. They progress from one evil to another, and they don't know me," declares the LORD. ⁴ Everyone beware of his neighbor, and do not trust any brother! For every brother will supplant his neighbor, and will walk with slanders. ⁵ Friends deceive each other, and will not speak the truth. They have taught their tongue to speak lies. They weary themselves commiting iniquity.

⁷ Did you not see a vain vision and speak a lying divination? Yet you say, the LORD declares, though I have not spoken.

³⁴ You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks. ³⁵ The good man brings good things out of his good store of treasure, and the evil man brings evil things out of his evil store of treasure.

²⁷ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside, but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and every impurity. ²⁸ In the same way, on the outside you also appear righteous to people, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

⁴ Absolutely not! Let God be true and every man a liar. As it is written: “So that You may be justified in Your words, and prevail in Your judgments.” ⁵ So also the tongue is a small member and makes great boasts. Behold, how great a forest is set on fire by a little spark! ⁶ The tongue also is a fire, a world of wickedness among the parts of the body. It pollutes the whole person, sets the course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. ⁷ All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, ⁸ But no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
