¹⁴ Then John's disciples came to him, saying, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?"

⁶ Many a man proclaims, each one, his kindness, Yet a faithful man who can find?

¹⁶ When you fast, do not be somber like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they already have their reward.

² Now when John heard in prison what the Christ was doing, he sent his disciples

¹⁸ Now John's disciples and the Pharisees were keeping a fast, and people came and asked Jesus: "Why is it that John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, while yours do not?" ¹⁹ Jesus answered, “Can the guests of the bridegroom fast while He is with them? As long as He is with them, they cannot fast. ²⁰ But a time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and when that day comes, they will fast. ²¹ "No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; if he does, the new piece will pull away from the old, and the tear is made worse. ²² And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. Instead, new wine is poured into new wineskins.”

³³ They said to him, “Why do John’s disciples often fast and pray, likewise also the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink?” ³⁴ Jesus replied, “Can you make the guests of the bridegroom fast while He is with them? ³⁵ But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them: in those days they will fast. ³⁶ He told them a parable also: "No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old one; if he does, he will tear the new garment, and the piece from the new will not match the old. ³⁷ And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins, the wine will spill, and the wineskins will be ruined. ³⁸ No, fresh wine must be poured into new wineskins. ³⁹ And no one after drinking old wine wants new, for he says, ‘The old is better.’”

⁹ To some who trusted in their own righteousness and viewed others with contempt, He also told this parable: ¹⁰ "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. ¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank You that I am not like other men--swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. ¹² I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all that I get.'
