Matthew 19:1-9

1 When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went to the territory of Judea on the other side of the Jordan. 2 Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there. 3 Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?" 4 "Have not you read," replied Jesus, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate." 7 “Why then,” they asked, “did Moses order a man to give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?” 8 He said to them, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives, on account of the hardness of your hearts, but it was not so from the beginning. 9 I tell you that whoever divorces his wife on any ground but her unfaithfulness, and marries another woman, commits adultery."

They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" 3 "What did Moses command you?" he replied, 4 They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce, and to put her away." 5 "It was owing to the hardness of your hearts," said Jesus, "that Moses gave you this direction; 6 But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. 7 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, 8 and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore, what God has joined together, let man not separate. 10 When they were in the house, his disciples asked him again about this. 11 "Any man who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her; 12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery."
