⁴² It was the Day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath. Since it was already evening,

⁵⁷ When evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathaea, named Joseph, who had himself also become a disciple of Jesus. ⁵⁸ came to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. ⁵⁹ So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, ⁶⁰ and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut into the rock. Then he rolled a great stone across the entrance to the tomb and went away. ⁶¹ Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb. ⁶² The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and Pharisees assembled before Pilate.

⁵⁰ Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the council, a good and upright man, ⁵¹ who had not consented to their decision or action. He was from the Judean town of Arimathea, and was waiting for the kingdom of God. ⁵² He went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. ⁵³ Then he took it down, wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid it in a tomb cut in the rock, in which no one had yet been laid. ⁵⁴ It was the Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was just beginning. ⁵⁵ The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed along and saw the tomb and how his body was laid, ⁵⁶ Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.

³¹ It was the day of Preparation, and the next day was a High Sabbath. In order that the bodies would not remain on the cross during the Sabbath, the Jews asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies removed.

³⁸ After this, Joseph, the Arimathean, who was a disciple of Jesus, but a concealed disciple for fear of the Jews, asked permission of Pilate to take away the body of Jesus. ³⁹ Nicodemus, who had previously come to Jesus at night, also brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. ⁴⁰ So they took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen cloths with the spices, according to the Jewish burial custom. ⁴¹ Now at the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. ⁴² And because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
