¹ And the two sons of Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, each took his censer and put fire in it, and laid incense on it, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he had not commanded them.

²³ Aaron married Elisheba, the daughter of Amminadab, the sister of Nahshon, and she bore him Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

¹ The LORD said to Moses, "Come up to the LORD, you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and worship at a distance.

⁹ Then went Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu and the seventy elders of Israel up,

³ "Make all the utensils for it out of copper: pots for taking away the altar’s ashes, also shovels, bowls, forks, and incense burners.

¹ the LORD continued: "Bring your brother Aaron and his sons Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar to you from all the Israelites. They will serve me as priests.

¹ "Build an altar out of acacia wood for burning incense. ² The altar is to be square, a cubit long and a cubit wide, and two cubits high, and its horns are to be made of the same. ³ "Cover it all with pure gold, the top, the sides, and the horns. Put a gold molding around it. ⁴ "Make two gold rings. Place them below the molding on opposite sides to hold the poles for carrying it. ⁵ You will make the poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold; ⁶ You shall put the altar in front of the curtain that is over the Ark of the Testimony, in front of the Mercy Seat that is over the Testimony where I'll meet with you. ⁷ "Aaron must burn sweet incense on this altar every morning when he takes care of the lamps. ⁸ and likewise at even when he setteth up the lamps he shall burn cense perpetually before the LORD throughout your generations. ⁹ You will offer no strange incense on it, nor burnt offering, nor meal offering. And you will pour no drink offering on it.

³⁴ The LORD said to Moses, "Take for yourself spices: stacte, onycha, galbanum, and spices with pure frankincense, all in equal amounts. ³⁵ and make it into a compound of incense, the work of a perfumer, salted, pure, holy. ³⁶ You shall grind some of it fine, and put some before the Testimony in the Tent of Meeting where I shall meet with you. It shall be most holy to you.

¹¹ the anointing oil, and the sweet incense for the holy place. They will make all these things as I commanded you."

²⁹ And he made the holy anointing oil, and the pure fragrant incense,—the work of a perfumer.

³ And he made all the vessels of the altar: the cauldrons, shovels, basins, fleshhooks and coalpans all of brass.

²⁷ And he burnt sweet incense on it; as the LORD commanded Moses.

²⁴ Fire came out from before the LORD, and consumed the burnt offering and the fat upon the altar. When all the people saw it, they shouted, and fell on their faces.

¹ The LORD spoke to Moses, after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they drew near before the LORD, and died;

¹² And he is to take a vessel full of burning coal from the altar before the Lord and in his hand some sweet perfume crushed small, and take it inside the veil;

⁹ They shall therefore follow My requirements, lest they bear sin for it, and die therein, if they profane it. I am the LORD who sanctifies them.

² These are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. ³ These are the names of Aaron's sons, the anointed priests, who were ordained to serve as priests. ⁴ Nadab and Abihu died in the LORD's presence because they offered unauthorized fire in his presence in the Desert of Sinai. They had no children. So only Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests during the lifetime of their father Aaron.

⁶ »Korah, you and all your followers must do this tomorrow: Take incense burners, ⁷ tomorrow put fire in them and place incense on them before the LORD; the man whom the LORD chooses will be the holy one. You take too much upon yourselves, sons of Levi!"

¹⁶ And Moses said to Korah, You and all your band are to come before the Lord tomorrow, you and they and Aaron: ¹⁷ "Each man will take his incense burner and put incense in it. They will offer all two hundred and fifty incense burners to the LORD. Then you and Aaron offer your incense burners." ¹⁸ So each man took his incense burner. He put burning coals and incense in it and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the tent of meeting.

⁴⁶ Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer, put fire from the altar in it, lay incense on it, carry it quickly to the congregation, and make atonement for them; for wrath has gone out from the LORD! The plague has begun.”

⁶¹ Yet Nadab and Abihu died when they offered alien fire before the LORD.

² You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, to keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

³² »Be careful to do what I command you. Do not add to it nor take away from it.

³ By becoming a servant of other gods and worshipping them or the sun or the moon or all the stars of heaven, against my orders;

¹ And lo! a man of God, came in out of Judah, by the word of Yahweh, unto Bethel,—as Jeroboam was standing by the altar, to make a perfume. ² He cried against the altar by the word of the LORD, and said, "Altar, altar, thus says the LORD: 'Look, a son shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name. On you he shall sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense on you, and they will burn men's bones on you.'"

¹⁶ But when he became strong his heart was lifted up to [his] downfall; and he transgressed against the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense. ¹⁷ But Azariah the priest went in after him with four score priests of the LORD that were bold men. ¹⁸ And they stood against King Uzziah and said to him, "It is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the LORD, but it is for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, who are consecrated to burn incense. Go out of the sanctuary, for you have acted unfaithfully. There will be no honor for you from the LORD God." ¹⁹ Then Uzziah was angry. He had a censer in his hand to burn incense, and while he was angry with the priests, the leprosy broke out on his forehead before the priests in the LORD's house, beside the altar of incense. ²⁰ And Azariah the chief priest, and all the priests, looked upon him, and, behold, he was leprous in his forehead, and they thrust him out from thence; yea, himself hasted also to go out, because the LORD had smitten him.

² Let my prayer be set before you like incense; the lifting up of my hands like the evening sacrifice.

³¹ They have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I did not command, nor did it come into my mind.

⁵ and have built the high places of Baal, to burn their sons in the fire for burnt offerings to Baal; which I did not command, nor spoke it, neither came it into my mind:

³⁵ They built the high places of Baal that are in the Hinnom Valley in order to sacrifice their sons and daughters to Molech something that I didn't command, nor did it ever enter my mind for them to require this utterly repugnant thing and lead Judah into sin."

⁸ in that you provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, burning incense to other gods in the land of Egypt, where you have gone to live; that you may be cut off, and that you may be a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth?

¹⁵ Then all the men who knew that their wives had burned incense to other gods, and all the women who stood by, a great assembly, even all the people who lived in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah saying,

¹⁹ And when we burnt incense to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink-offerings unto her,—was this without the consent of our husbands, that we did make cakes for her to make her image, and pour out drink-offerings unto her? ²⁰ Then Jeremiah said to all the people; to the men, and to the women, and to all the people who were answering: ²¹ Did not the Lord remember the incense which you burned in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem you, and your fathers, and your kings, and your princes, and the people of the land? Did it not enter into His heart?

⁹ he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. ¹⁰ And, as it was the Hour of Incense, the people were all praying outside. ¹¹ Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense;

⁴ containing the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered ark of the covenant. Inside the ark were the gold jar of manna, Aaron’s staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant.

³ Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. And he was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all the saints, on the golden altar before the throne. ⁴ The smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, went up before God out of the angel's hand. ⁵ Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it to the earth; and there were rolls of thunder, and rumblings, and flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.
