⁵⁵ I called on your name, LORD, out of the depths of the pit.

¹¹ So the LORD made the army commanders of the king of Assyria invade Judah. They took Manasseh captive, put a hook in his nose, put him in bronze shackles, and brought him to Babylon. ¹² But, in his distress, he appeased the face of the LORD his God,—and humbled himself greatly, before the God of his fathers;

⁵ The cords of the grave surrounded me. The snares of death confronted me. ⁶ (18:7) In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God; out of His temple He heard my voice, and my cry came before Him unto His ears.

¹ To the chief Musician. Of David. A Psalm. I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. ² He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand.

¹³ But as for me, my prayer is to You, O LORD, at a time of favor, O God! in the plentitude of Your mercy answer me, in the truth of Your salvation. ¹⁴ Rescue me from the mud and do not let me sink. Rescue me from those who hate me, and from the deep waters. ¹⁵ Do not let the torrent of waters flood over me, or the deep swallow me, or the pit close its mouth over me. ¹⁶ Answer me, O LORD, because your loyal love is good; according to your abundant mercies, turn to me, ¹⁷ Do not hide your face from your servant, for I am in distress. Answer me speedily. ¹⁸ Draw near and redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies.

³ The cords of death compassed me, and the pains of Sheol gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow ⁴ Then I called on the name of the LORD: "O LORD, please save my life!"

¹ A song of ascents. Out of the depths I call to you, O LORD. ² Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my petitions.

³ When my spirit faints within me, you know my way. On the path where I walk, they have hidden a trap for me; ⁴ Look on my right, and see; for there is no one who is concerned for me. Refuge has fled from me. No one cares for my soul. ⁵ I cry out to you, O LORD. I say, "You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living." ⁶ Listen to my cry, for I am in desperate need. Deliver me from my persecutors, for they are too strong for me. ⁷ Release me from prison so that I may praise your name. Righteous people will surround me because you are good to me.

⁶ So they took Jeremiah and threw him into the pit of Malchiah, the son of the king, which was in the courtyard of the guard. And they let Jeremiah down by ropes. Now in the pit there was no water, but only mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud.

² and said, "I called from my distress to the LORD, and he answered me; from the belly of Sheol I cried for help— you heard my voice. ³ For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current surrounded me; all Your breakers and Your waves passed over me. ⁴ I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.'

²⁴ On receiving this order, he placed them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. ²⁵ About midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. ²⁶ Suddenly a strong earthquake shook the foundations of the prison. At once all the doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose. ²⁷ When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, since he thought the prisoners had escaped. ²⁸ but Paul shouted aloud, "Do not harm yourself, we are all here!"
