Judges 8 Cross References - VIN

1 The men of Ephraim said to him, Why have you treated us this way, that you didn't call us when you went to fight with Midian? They rebuked him sharply. 2 And he said to them, "What I have done now in comparison with you? Are not the gleanings of Ephraim better than the grape harvest of Abiezer? 3 God gave Oreb and Zeeb, the leaders of Midian, into your control. What was I able to do compared to you?" When he said this, their anger calmed down. 4 Gideon and his three hundred men passed over the Jordan. Their pursuit continued. 5 He said to the men of Succoth: "Give my troops some bread. They are tired. I am still pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian." 6 The officials of Succoth said, "Is the hand of Zebah and Zalmunna in your hand now, that we should give bread to your army?" 7 And Gideon said Because of this, when the LORD has given Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I shall thresh your flesh with thorns of the wilderness and with briers. 8 He went up to Penuel and made the same request of them. The men of Penuel gave the same answer as the men of Succoth. 9 And Gideon said to the men of Penuel, When I return in peace, I will break down this tower. 10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their armies with them, about fifteen thousand men, all who were left of all the army of the sons of the east, for there fell a hundred and twenty thousand men who drew a sword. 11 Gideon went up by the way of those who lived in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah and attacked the army, which was unsuspecting. 12 When Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued them and captured them and routed the entire army. 13 Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle from the ascent of Heres. 14 He captured a young man from Succoth and questioned him. The young man listed for him the commanders of Succoth and its elders, seventy-seven men. 15 And he came in to the men of Succoth, and said, Behold, Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you taunted me, saying, Is the palm of Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hand that we should give bread to your weary men? 16 So he took the elders of the city and disciplined the men of Succoth with thorns and briers from the desert. 17 He broke down the tower of Penuel, and killed the men of the city. 18 Afterwards, he asked Zebah and Zalmunna, "What were the men like whom you killed at Tabor?" They answered, "Like you, each one like the son of a king…" 19 He said, "They were my brothers, the sons of my mother. As the LORD lives, if you had saved them alive, I would not kill you." 20 He said to Jether his firstborn, "Get up, and kill them." But the youth did not draw his sword; for he feared, because he was yet a youth. 21 And Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise and fall upon us. For as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments on their camels' necks. 22 Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, “Rule over us, both you, your son, and your son's son also; for you have saved us out of the hand of Midian.” 23 But Gideon said to them, I will not rule over you. Nor shall my son rule over you. The Lord will rule over you. 24 And he said to them: I desire one request of you: Give me the earlets of your spoils. For the Ismaelites were accustomed to wear golden earlets. 25 They answered, “We will willingly give them.” They spread a garment, and every man threw the earrings of his plunder into it. 26 The weight of the golden earrings that he requested was one thousand seven hundred shekels of gold, besides the crescents, the pendants and the purple clothing that was on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains that were about their camels' necks. 27 Gideon made an ephod of it and put it in his city, in Ophrah, and all Israel prostituted themselves by worshipping it there; and it became a snare to Gideon and to his house. 28 And Midian was subdued before the Israelites, and they did not again lift up their head, and the land rested for forty years in the days of Gideon. 29 Jerub-Baal son of Joash lived in his own house. 30 Gideon had seventy sons conceived from his body, for he had many wives. 31 His concubine who was in Shechem also bore him a son, and he named him Abimelech. 32 Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the tomb of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. 33 Later on, as soon as Gideon was dead, the Israelites again committed spiritual adultery with the Baals, and appointed Baal-berith to be their god. 34 and thought not on the LORD their God which had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side. 35 They did not show kindness to the family of Gideon for all the good that he had done for Israel.

Judges 12:1-6

1 The men of Ephraim were ready for battle. They crossed the Jordan River to Zaphon and said to Jephthah: "Why did you cross the border to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you? We are going to burn the house down over your head!" 2 Jephthah said to them, I and my people were at great strife with the Ammonites and when I called you, you didn't save me out of their hand. 3 When I saw that you wouldn't be delivering me, I took my own life in my hands, crossed over to fight the Ammonites, and the LORD gave them into my control. So why have you come here today to fight me?" 4 Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead and fought with Ephraim, and the men of Gilead struck Ephraim because they said, You Gileadites are renegades of Ephraim from Ephraim and Manasseh. 5 Then Gilead captured the fords of the Jordan from Ephraim, and whenever a fugitive of Ephraim said, "Let me cross over," the men of Gilead said to him, "Are you an Ephraimite?" When he said, "No," 6 they would tell him to say "Shibboleth." But he would say "Sibboleth," because he could not pronounce it correctly. Then they would kill him at the Jordan River crossing. Forty-two thousand of the Ephraimites were killed.

Let him show it by his good conduct, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast in it or deny the truth. 15 Such wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there is disorder and every evil practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere. 18 Peacemakers who sow in peace reap the fruit of righteousness.
