¹ Can you draw out the leviathan with a fishhook, Or hold down his tongue with a line? ² Can you put a reed rope into his nose, or pierce his jaw with a thorn? ³ Would he make many supplications to you, Or speak to you with tender words? ⁴ Will he make an agreement with you, so that you may take him as a servant for ever? ⁵ Will you play with it as with birds and put it on a leash for your girls? ⁶ Will traders barter for him? Will they part him among the merchants? ⁷ Can you fill his skin with harpoons? or his head with fish spears? ⁸ Lay your hand on him, and you'll remember the struggle. You'll never do that again! ⁹ Behold, one's hope is proved a lie; Even at the sight of him one is hurled down. ¹⁰ "No one is as fierce that he would dare stir him up. Who then is able to stand against me? ¹¹ "Who has preceded me that I should pay him? Everything under heaven is mine. ¹² I will not keep silence concerning his limbs, nor his mighty strength, nor his graceful frame. ¹³ Who can strip off his outer armor? Who can approach him with a bridle? ¹⁴ Who can open the doors of his face? round about his teeth is terror ¹⁵ Its back has scales of shields; it is shut up closely as with a seal. ¹⁶ One is so near to another, that no air can come between them. ¹⁷ They are joined one to another; they cling together and cannot be separated. ¹⁸ "His snorting releases flashes of light; his eyes are like the rays of the dawn. ¹⁹ Torches go from its mouth; sparks of fire shoot out. ²⁰ Smoke billows from his nostrils; like a boiling pot or burning reeds. ²¹ His breath kindles coals, and a flame goes forth from his mouth. ²² "Strength abides in its neck, and dismay dances before it. ²³ "The folds of its flesh cling together; it is firmly cast and immovable. ²⁴ "Its heart is as hard as stone, as hard as the lower millstone. ²⁵ When he raises himself up, the mighty are afraid. They retreat before his thrashing. ²⁶ The sword of him that reaches him cannot avail: neither the spear, the dart, nor the javelin. ²⁷ He regards iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood. ²⁸ The arrow can’t make him flee. Sling stones are like chaff to him. ²⁹ Clubs are counted as stubble. He laughs at the rushing of the javelin. ³⁰ His undersides are like sharp potsherds, leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge. ³¹ It makes the deep boil like a cooking pot; it makes the sea like a pot of ointment. ³² Behind it, it leaves a glistening wake; one would think that the deep has gray hair. ³³ "On the ground it has no equal— a creature without fear. ³⁴ It observes all the lofty; it is king over all that are proud."

⁸ Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to rouse Leviathan;

¹⁴ you crushed the heads of leviathan and gave him for food to the people - the desertdwellers:

²⁶ There the ships go, and leviathan, whom you formed to play there.

¹ In that day the LORD will punish with his sword, his fierce, great and powerful sword. He will slay Leviathan the fleeing, coiling serpent, the monster of the sea.

²⁸ Because your wrath against me and your words of pride have come up to my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my cord in your lips, and I will make you go back by the way you came.

²⁹ "For the reason that you rage against me and because your insolence (arrogance) has reached my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth. I will make you return by the way you came."

⁴ »I will put hooks in your jaws and make the fish of your rivers cling to your scales. I will bring you up out of the midst of your rivers. All the fish of your rivers will cling to your scales. ⁵ "I will abandon you to the wilderness and all the fish of your rivers. You will fall on the open field. You will not be brought together or gathered. I have given you for food to the beasts of the earth and to the birds of the sky.

²¹ His mouth was smooth as butter, but his heart was war. His words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.

¹ A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

²³ The poor plead for mercy, but the rich answer harshly.

¹⁵ Through patience a ruler may be persuaded; a gentle word can break a bone.

¹⁰ That say to the seers: 'See not,' and to the prophets: 'Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy delusions;

²⁸ God blessed them and said to them: "Be fruitful and increase in number. Fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and dominate the birds of the air. Have dominion over every living creature that moves on the ground."

⁶ Then let his master bring him unto the judges and set him to the door or the doorpost, and bore his ear through with an awl, and let him be his servant forever.

¹⁷ then take an awl and pierce through his earlobe into the door. Then he will be your slave forever. You may do the same for your female slaves.

³¹ And his servants said to him: Behold, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful; so let us put sackcloths on our loins, and ropes on our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: perhaps he will save our lives. ³² So they put sackcloth on their bodies and ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, "Your servant Ben Hadad says, 'Please let me live.'" He said, "Is he still alive? He is my brother." ³³ Now the men took it as a sign, and were quick to pick up on his word. They said: "Benhadad is your brother." Then he said: "Go and get him." So Ben-hadad came out to him and he made him get up into his carriage. ³⁴ Benhadad said: "The towns my father took from your father I will give back. You may name streets for yourself in Damascus as my father did in Samaria." As for me, at the price of this agreement you will let me go. So he made an agreement with him and let him go.

⁵ You made him a little lower than the angels, You have crowned him with glory and honor; ⁶ You make him ruler over the works of your hands. You have put all things under his feet:

²⁵ When their hearts were merry they said, Call for Samson so that he can entertain us. They called Samson out of the prison, and he performed before them. They set him between the pillars, ²⁶ And Samson said to the lad who held him by the hand, Allow me that I may feel the pillars upon which the house rests, that I may lean upon them. ²⁷ Now the house was full of men and women. All the lords of the Philistines were there, and on the roof there were about three thousand men and women watching while Samson performed. ²⁸ Samson called to the LORD and said, Sovereign LORD, remember me please, and strengthen me please, just this once oh God, that I may with one blow be avenged on the Philistines for my two eyes. ²⁹ Then Samson grabbed the two middle pillars upon which the house rested and braced himself against them with one pillar in his right hand and the other in his left. ³⁰ Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines! He pushed with all his might and the house fell on the lords and on all the people who were there. So he killed more in his death than he killed in his life.

¹¹ "They explore the sources of rivers to bring hidden treasures to light.

¹¹ When they saw him, they brought thirty companions to be with him.

¹¹ The king of Israel answered, Tell him, 'Don't let him who puts on his armour brag like he who takes it off'.

⁴ But they were very afraid, and they said, "Look, two kings could not stand before him; how can we stand?"

³¹ Or what king on his way to war with another king will not first sit down and consider whether he can engage with ten thousand men the one coming against him with twenty thousand? ³² And if he is unable, he will send a delegation while the other king is still far off, to ask for terms of peace.

³⁴ so that the sights that you see with your eyes will drive you mad.

¹¹ "Look," the LORD said to Samuel. "I'm about to do something in Israel that will make both ears of anyone who hears it tingle.

¹⁹ As often as it passes through, it will take you, for morning by morning it will pass through, in the day and in the night, and understanding the message will be only terror."

¹¹ There will be great earthquakes, famines, and pestilences in various places, along with fearful sights and great signs from heaven.

⁹ Judah is a lion's whelp. My son, you have risen up from the prey; he stoops, he crouches like a lion; and like a lioness, who can rouse him?

⁹ He lies down, he rests as a lion; and as a young lion, who shall rouse him? Those that bless you are blessed, and those that curse you are cursed.

⁴ He is wise in heart and mighty in strength; who has resisted him and succeeded?

⁹ "Do you have an arm (power) like God's? Can your voice thunder like his?

¹¹ Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. ¹² Kiss the Son, lest he be angry and you be destroyed in your way, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed (happy) are all who take refuge (put trust) in him.

⁵ Indeed, if you run with others on foot, and they tire you out, how can you compete with horses? You are secure in a land at peace, but how will you do in the thicket of the Jordan?

¹⁷ And he said to me, "Have you seen, son of man? Was it too small a thing for the house of Judah to do the detestable things that they did here? For they filled up the land with violence, and they provoked me to anger again, and look! They are putting the branch to their nose. ¹⁸ Therefore will I also deal with them in anger; My eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity; and though they cry in My ears with a loud voice, yet will I not hear them.

²² Are we trying to provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?

⁵ ‘If you will obey me and are faithful to the terms of my covenant, then out of all the nations you will be my own special possession, for all the earth is mine.

¹⁴ Look! For to the LORD your God belong heaven and the highest heavens, the earth and all that is in it.

¹¹ Yours, O Lord, is the strength and the power and the glory, and the authority and the honour: for everything in heaven and on earth is yours; yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are lifted up as head over all. ¹² Wealth and honour come from you, and you are ruler over all, and in your hand is power and strength; it is in your power to make great, and to give strength to all. ¹³ "Now, our God, we give you thanks, and we praise your glorious name. ¹⁴ But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly as this? For all things come from you, and we have given you of your own.

² Can a man be useful to God? For can a wise man be useful to himself? ³ "Is it any pleasure to the Almighty if you are righteous? Is it profitable to him if you make your ways blameless?

⁷ If you are righteous, what do you give to him, or what does he receive from your hand?

³ You go before him with wonderful blessings, and put a crown of fine gold on his head.

¹ A Psalm of David. The earth is the LORD's, and the fullness of it; the world, and those who live in it.

¹² If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.

¹⁶ The highest heavens belong to the LORD, but he gave the earth to human beings.

³⁵ “Who has given so much to God, that God should repay him?”

²⁶ for, "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it."

²⁸ But if anyone says to you, "This has been offered in sacrifice," then do not eat it, both for the sake of the man who informed you and for conscience' sake

²⁵ God made the wild animals according to their kinds. He made the livestock according to their kinds and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. God saw that it was good.

⁹ Do not be like the horse, or like the mule, which have no understanding, who are controlled by bit and bridle, or else they will not come near to you.

³ When we put bits into the mouths of the horses to make them obey us, we can guide the whole animal.

¹⁰ when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place,

⁴ My soul is among lions; I lie among those on fire, the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

⁶ God broke their teeth in their mouths; the lord fractured in pieces the molars of the lions.

¹⁴ a generation whose teeth are like swords, and its jaw teeth like knives, to devour the poor from the earth, and the needy from among men.

⁴ When the doors to the road are closed, When the sound of the grinding becomes low, And one rises at the sound of the bird, Yet all the daughters of song are prostrate;"

⁷ After this I looked in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, frightening and terrifying, and very strong. And it had great iron teeth; it devoured and broke in pieces, and stamped the rest with its feet. And it was different from all the beasts before it; and it had ten horns.

²³ [J] Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom: nor the mighty man boast of his strength; neither let the rich man boast of his riches:

² And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” ³ No one in heaven, on earth, or under the earth could open the scroll or look inside it.

⁵ Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has triumphed to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

⁹ "Let its morning stars become dark and cause it to wait for daylight in vain and not see the first rays of dawn,

¹⁴ His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like a flame of fire;

⁸ Smoke went up from his nostrils. A raging fire came out of his mouth. Glowing coals were kindled by it.

¹³ The word of the LORD came to me a second time: "What do you see?" I replied, "I see a boiling pot, and its mouth is tilted away from the north." ¹⁴ Then the LORD said to me, "From the north disaster will pour out on all who live in the land,

¹² Out of the brightness in front of him, those rain clouds passed by with hailstones and lightning.

³³ For a place of fire has long been ready; yes, it has been made ready for the king; he has made it deep and wide: it is massed with fire and much wood; the breath of the Lord, like a stream of fire, puts a light to it.

⁵ Plague went before him, and pestilence followed his feet.

¹⁹ "Do you give the horse his might? Do you clothe his neck with a mane?

¹⁶ "What strength he has in his loins, what power in the muscles of his belly!

¹⁴ I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be your plagues; O grave, I will be your destruction: pity shall be hid from my eyes.

⁵⁵ Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? ⁵⁶ The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. ⁵⁷ But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!

⁴ I know that you are stubborn, and your neck is an iron sinew, and your forehead bronze.

³ O LORD, are not Your eyes for the truth? You struck them, but they felt no pain. You consumed them, yet they refused to take correction. They made their faces harder than rock; they have refused to return.

¹² "They made their hearts hard like flint and would not listen to the law, and the words that the LORD Almighty sent by his Spirit through the former prophets. Great anger came from the LORD Almighty!"

²⁸ Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distresses.

⁴ Then the LORD sent a great wind over the sea, and a severe storm broke out. It seemed as if the ship were about to break up. ⁵ And the sailors were afraid, and each man cried to his god. And they threw out the ship's articles into the sea, to lighten it off of them. But Jonah had gone down into the hold of the ship; and he lay down, and was sound asleep. ⁶ So the captain came to him, and said: "Why are you sleeping? Get up and call on your god. Perhaps your god will be concerned about us so that we will not perish."

²¹ He paws in the valley, and rejoices in his strength; he goes on to meet the weapons. ²² "It laughs at fear, is afraid of nothing, and does not back away from swords. ²³ A quiver of arrows rattles against his side, along with a flashing spear and a lance. ²⁴ Leaping in his excitement, he takes in the ground; he cannot stand still when the trumpets sound!

⁷ He laughs at the turmoil of the city; he does not hear the driver's shouts;

¹⁰ "They scoff at kings, and princes are derision to them. They laugh at every stronghold, for they build earthen ramps and capture them.

¹⁴ Uzziah prepared shields, spears, helmets, armor, bows, and stones for slings for the entire army.

¹⁵ "See I will make you into a threshing sledge, new and sharp, with many teeth. You will thresh the mountains and crush them. You will reduce the hills to chaff.

² Now the earth was formless and empty, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

¹⁵ and let them be for lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth;” and it was so.

¹⁵ but you will go to your fathers in peace. You will be buried at a good old age.

⁸ Then Abraham breathed his last, and died in a good old age, an old man and full of days, and was added to his people.

³⁸ Jacob replied: "My son will not go with you. His brother is dead, and he is the only one left. If any harm comes to him on the trip you are taking, the grief would drive this gray-haired old man to his grave!"

¹⁴ The deep says, It is not in me; and the sea says, It is not with me.

¹⁶ "Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep?

³⁰ when the waters become hard as stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen?

³¹ Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is attained by a life of righteousness.

²⁹ The glory of young men is their strength; and the splendor of elders is their gray hair.

¹⁹ "He ranks first among the works of God, yet his Maker can approach him with his sword.

² Pharaoh said, "Who is the LORD that I should listen to him and let Israel go? I don't know about the LORD, nor will I let Israel go!"

¹² By his power the sea was made quiet; and by his wisdom Rahab was wounded.

⁸ The proud beasts have not trodden it, nor hath the lion passed thereby.

⁶ Therefore pride is their necklace and violence covers them like a garment.

¹⁰ Therefore their people return to them, and they drink up waters of abundance.

¹ Woe to the crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fertile valley of those who are overcome with wine!

³ Speak and say, Thus said the Sovereign LORD: Behold me against thee Pharaoh, king of Egypt, the great sea-monster lying in the midst of his rivers, who said, The, river is to me, and I made me.

¹ And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed in the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. ² She was pregnant, and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth. ³ Then another sign appeared in heaven: a huge red dragon with seven heads, ten horns, and seven royal crowns on his heads.

² The beast I saw looked like a leopard. His feet were like the feet of a bear. His mouth was like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power, his throne, and great authority.

² He seized the dragon, the ancient serpent who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. ³ He threw him into the pit, and closed it and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that time, he must be released for a short while.
