¹⁶ This is what the LORD says: "Stand beside the roads and watch. Ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is. Walk in it and find rest for yourselves. But they said, 'We won't walk in it!'

⁷ Remember the days of old; consider the years of many generations. Ask your father, and he will show you; your elders, and they will tell you.

⁷ Tell me, you whom my soul loves, where you graze your flock, where you rest them at noon; for why should I be as one who is veiled beside the flocks of your companions? ⁸ If you do not know, most beautiful among women, follow the tracks of the sheep. Graze your young goats beside the shepherds' tents.

⁵ O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord!

²⁰ To the Law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this Word, it is because no light is in them.

¹² to whom he said, "This is the resting place. Give rest to weary;" and "This is the refreshing;" but they would not listen.

²¹ and when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, This is the way, walk in it.

²⁵ "Don't run until your feet are bare and your throat is dry. But you say, 'It's hopeless! Because I love foreign gods, I'll go after them!'"

²³ but I did give them this command: Obey me and I'll be your God, and you will be my people. Walk in all the ways that I command you so it will go well for you.

¹² But they say, 'It is in vain; for we will walk after our own plans, and we will each follow the stubbornness of his evil heart.'”

¹⁵ Yet my people have forgotten me, and they burn incense to worthless idols that make them stumble in their journey on the ancient paths. They walk on trails, on a way that is not built up.

²¹ I spoke to you when you were secure, but you said, "I won't listen!" This has been your way since your youth, for you haven't obeyed me.

¹⁶ "We refuse to listen to what you have told us in the name of the LORD.

⁴ Remember the law of My servant Moses which I commanded him in Horeb for all Israel, the statutes and judgments.

²⁸ Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. ²⁹ Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.

²⁸ “But what do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’ ²⁹ ‘I will not,’ he replied. But later he changed his mind and went. ³⁰ Then the father went to the other son and told him the same thing. He replied, 'I will, sir,' but he didn't go. ³¹ Which of the two did what his father wanted?" They said, "The second one." Jesus said to them, "I tell you, the tax-collectors and prostitutes are going into the Kingdom of God ahead of you. ³² For John came to you in a righteous way and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.

²⁹ Abraham answered, 'They have Moses and the prophets; let them listen to them.'

³⁹ You pore over the Scriptures because you presume that by them you possess eternal life. These are the very words that testify about Me,

⁴⁶ If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. ⁴⁷ But since you do not believe what he wrote, how will you believe what I say?”

³⁵ Then Jesus said to them, "A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest the darkness overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.

¹⁷ If you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

¹¹ Now the Bereans were more noble-minded than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if these teachings were true.

¹ What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather, has discovered? ² For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. ³ For what does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness." ⁴ Now the wages of the worker are not credited as a gift, but as an obligation. ⁵ However, to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness, ⁶ Just so David speaks of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works,

¹² And he is also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised, but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

⁶ Therefore, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in Him,

¹² Then you will not be sluggish, but will imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.

² This is why the ancients were commended.
