¹² My brothers, can a fig tree grow olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

²³ When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water because it tasted bitter. That is why the place was called Marah (Bitter Place). ²⁴ So the people murmured against Moses—saying, What are we to drink? ²⁵ And he cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a piece of wood, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There he made a rule and regulation for them, and there he tested them.

¹⁹ The men of the city said to Elisha, "Please now, the location of the city is good, as my master can see, but the water is bad and the land unproductive." ²⁰ So he said, "Bring me a new bowl and put salt in it." So they brought it to him. ²¹ and he went to the spring, threw the salt in the water, and said: "This is what the LORD says: 'I make this water pure. It will not cause any more deaths or miscarriages.'" ²² And the waters were healed to this day, according to the word of Elisha that he spoke.

² He dug it up, gathered out its stones, planted it with the choicest vine, built a tower in its midst, and also cut out a winepress in it. He looked for it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes. ³ And now, dweller of Jerusalem, and man of Judah, judge, pray, between Me and My vineyard, ⁴ What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? Why, when I looked for it to yield grapes, did it yield wild grapes?

²¹ I planted you myself as a choice vine, from the very best seed. How did you turn against me into a degenerate and foreign vine?

⁸ And he said to me, These waters go out toward the eastern circuit, and go down into the Arabah, and enter the sea. They are brought out into the sea, and the waters shall be healed. ⁹ »Wherever the river flows, there will be many fish and animals. The river will make the water in the Dead Sea fresh. Wherever the river flows, it will bring life. ¹⁰ It will happen, that fishermen will stand by it. From En Gedi even to En Eglaim will be a place for the spreading of nets. Their fish will be after their kinds, as the fish of the great sea, exceedingly many. ¹¹ "But the water in the swamps and marshes will not become fresh. It will remain salty.

¹⁶ By their fruit you will recognize them. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? ¹⁷ Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. ¹⁸ A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. ¹⁹ Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. ²⁰ So then, by their fruit you will recognize them.

³³ Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.

⁴³ No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. ⁴⁴ For each tree is recognized by its own fruit. For people do not harvest figs from thorn bushes, nor grapes from a brier bush.

¹⁶ If the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, then the whole lump is holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. ¹⁷ Now if some branches have been broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others to share in the nourishment of the olive root, ¹⁸ do not boast over those branches. If you do, remember this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you.
