¹ And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, ² "Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir, and prophesy against it, ³ And say to it, So says the Sovereign LORD: Behold, I am against you, Mount Seir, and I will stretch My hand against you, and I will make you a ruin and a waste. ⁴ I will lay your cities waste, and you will be desolate. Then you will know that I am the LORD. ⁵ because there has been to you an ancient hostility, and you handed over the Israelites to the power of the sword at the time of their disaster, at the time of their final punishment. ⁶ "'Therefore as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD: I will give you over to bloodshed (death), and bloodshed (death) will pursue you. Since you have not hated bloodshed, therefore bloodshed will pursue you. ⁷ And I will make Mount Seir a cause for wonder and a waste, cutting off from it all comings and goings. ⁸ I will fill its mountains with its slain. The slain with the sword will fall in your hills and in your valleys and in all your watercourses. ⁹ I will make you a perpetual desolation, and your cities will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the LORD. ¹⁰ Because you have said, These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and we will possess them; although the LORD was there: ¹¹ Therefore, as I live," declares the Sovereign LORD, "so I will deal with you according to your anger and according to your jealousy that you did, because of your hatred against them, and I will make myself known among them when I judge you. ¹² You will know that I, the LORD, have heard all your insults which you have spoken against the mountains of Israel, saying, 'They have been laid desolate. They have been given us to devour.' ¹³ and you have spoken swelling words against me with your mouth: I have heard [them]. ¹⁴ Thus says the Sovereign LORD: When the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate. ¹⁵ "As you rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel because it was desolate, so I will do to you. You will be desolated, O Mount Seir, and all Edom, all of it. Then they will know that I am the LORD.’"

³ Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in Seir, the country of Edom.

⁸ So Esau made his living-place in the hill-country of Seir Esau is Edom. ⁹ And these are the generations of Esau, the father of the Edomites in the hill-country of Seir:

⁵ Make no attack on them, for I will not give you any of their land, not even space enough for a man's foot: because I have given Mount Seir to Esau for his heritage.

⁴ and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I gave the hill country of Seir to possess, but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt.

¹⁰ And now, behold, the sons of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir (whom you would not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned aside from them and did not destroy them),

²² And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushes against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, who were come against Judah; and they were defeated. ²³ And the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, to exterminate and destroy [them]; and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they helped to destroy one another.

¹¹ Amaziah courageously led his troops. When he came to the Dead Sea region, he killed ten thousand men from Seir. ¹² The army of Judah captured another 10,000 prisoners and took them to the top of a cliff and threw them down from there where they all were dashed to pieces. ¹³ The troops that Amaziah sent back so that they couldn’t go with him into battle raided the towns in Judah from Samaria to Beth Horon. They killed three thousand people and took a lot of goods. ¹⁴ After Amaziah came back from defeating the Edomites, he brought the gods of the people of Seir, set them up as his gods, bowed down to them, and burned sacrifices to them.

³ They conspire with cunning against your people. They plot against your cherished ones. ⁴ “Come,” they say, “let’s destroy them as a nation, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more.” ⁵ Indeed, they shrewdly planned together, forming an alliance against you ⁶ the tents of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarites; ⁷ Gebal and Ammon and Amalek, Philistia with the dwellers of Tyre;" ⁸ Even Assyria joined them to strengthen the descendants of Lot. [Interlude] ⁹ Do to them as you did to Midian, as you did to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the river Kishon ¹⁰ who perished at Endor, and became as the dung of the earth. ¹¹ Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, yes, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna, ¹² who said, "Let us take possession of God's pasturelands." ¹³ My God, make them like tumbleweed, like chaff before the wind. ¹⁴ As a fire burneth a forest,—And as a flame setteth mountains ablaze, ¹⁵ so pursue them with your tempest, and terrify them with your storm. ¹⁶ Fill their faces with shame and they will seek Your name, O LORD. ¹⁷ Shame and terrify them eternally; yes, that they blush and destruct; ¹⁸ And let them know Your name is the LORD, that You alone are the Most High over all the earth.

¹ Come near, you nations, to hear; and hearken, you people: let the earth hear, and all that is in it; the world, and all things that come forth of it. ² For the LORD is enraged against all the nations, and angry with all their armies. He has utterly destroyed them. He has given them over for slaughter. ³ Their slain also will be cast out. And the stench of their dead bodies will come up and the mountains will be melted with their blood. ⁴ And all the powers of the heavens shall melt, and the sky shall be rolled up like a scroll; and all the stars shall fall like leaves from a vine, and as leaves fall from a fig tree. ⁵ For my sword saturates in the heavens: behold, it descends on Edom and on the people of my devotement to judgment. ⁶ The sword of the LORD is filled with blood; it is made fat with fatness, with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams; for the LORD has a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Edom. ⁷ Wild oxen will be killed with them, young bulls along with rams. Their land will be drenched with blood. Their dust will be covered with fat. ⁸ For the LORD has a day of vengeance, a year of retribution for the strife of Zion. ⁹ Her streams will be turned into pitch, her dust into sulphur, and her land will become burning pitch; ¹⁰ It won’t be quenched night or day. Its smoke will go up forever. From generation to generation, it will lie waste. No one will pass through it forever and ever. ¹¹ but the pelican and the porcupine will possess it, the owl and the raven will dwell in it. He will stretch the line of confusion over it, and the plumb line of emptiness. ¹² As for her nobles, none shall be there to be called to the kingdom; and all her princes shall be nothing. ¹³ Thorns will come up in its palaces, nettles and thistles in its fortresses; and it will be a habitation of jackals, a court for ostriches. ¹⁴ And the wildcats will meet with the hyenas, and the wild goat will cry to his fellow. There too, nocturnal animals shall settle, and shall find themselves a place of rest. ¹⁵ The snake shall nest there, and shall lay, and hatch, and shall gather in her shadow. Vultures shall also be gathered together, each with its mate. ¹⁶ Search in the scroll of the LORD, and read: not one of these will be missing. None will lack her mate. ⁷ For the Sovereign LORD will help me. Therefore I have not been confounded. Therefore I have set my face like a flint and I know that I will not be put to shame.

¹ Who is this, coming from Edom, from Bozrah in bright red garments? Who is this honored in his garment, lying down in his great strength? "It is I, speaking in justice, mighty to save!" ² Why are your garments red, and your garments like he who treads in the winepress? ³ “I have trodden the wine press alone. Of the peoples, no one was with me. Yes, I trod them in my anger and trampled them in my wrath. Their lifeblood is sprinkled on my garments, and I have stained all my clothing. ⁴ For the day of vengeance was in my heart, and the year of my redeemed has come. ⁵ I looked, and there was no one to help; and I wondered that there was no one to uphold. Therefore my own arm brought salvation to me. My own wrath upheld me. ⁶ "In my wrath I trampled on people. In my rage I made them drunk and poured their blood on the ground."

²⁵ "Look, days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I'll punish all who are circumcised only in the flesh: ²⁶ Egypt, Judah, Edom, the people of Ammon, Moab, all those who live in the desert and shave the corners of their beard; indeed all the other nations that are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel that is uncircumcised of heart."

⁷ Concerning Edom. Thus saith the LORD of hosts: Is there no more wisdom in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom spent? ⁸ Flee, turn around! Go to a remote place to stay, residents of Dedan! For I'll bring Esau's disaster on him at the time when I punish him. ⁹ If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave some gleaning grapes? If thieves came by night, wouldn't they steal until they had enough? ¹⁰ But I'll strip Esau bare. I'll uncover his hiding places so he cannot conceal himself. His offspring, his relatives, and his neighbors will be destroyed, and he will no longer exist. ¹¹ Leave your orphans. I will let them live. And your widows, let them trust in me." ¹² This is what the LORD says: "If those who do not deserve to drink from the cup still drink from it, why should you go unpunished? You will not go unpunished. You must drink from it." ¹³ For I have sworn by Myself, declares the LORD, that Bozrah shall become a ruin, a reproach, a waste, and a curse. And all its cities shall be wastes forever. ¹⁴ I heard a message from the LORD. A messenger was sent among the nations to say: "Assemble and attack Edom. Get ready for battle." ¹⁵ For lo, I will make you small among the nations, despised among men. ¹⁶ Your terror has deceived you, the pride of your heart, O you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, you who seize the height of the hill. Though you make your nest high like the eagle, from there I will bring you down," declares the LORD. ¹⁷ "Edom will become an object of horror. Everyone who passes by her will be horrified and will scoff because of all her wounds. ¹⁸ Just like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbors," says the LORD, "no one will live there. No human being will reside in it. ¹⁹ Look, like a lion he comes up from the thickets of the Jordan to a pastureland by a constantly flowing stream. So I will chase him away hurriedly from it. And whoever is chosen I will appoint over it. For who is like me, and who can summon me? And who is this, the shepherd who can stand before me?" ²⁰ Therefore hear the counsel of the LORD that he has taken against Edom; and his thoughts, that he has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out; surely he shall destroy their habitations with them. ²¹ At the noise of their fall, the earth shall quake, the cry of their voice shall be heard to the reed sea. ²² Look, he will rise up and fly swiftly like an eagle. He will spread his wings against Bozrah, and on that day the hearts of the warriors of Edom will be like the heart of a woman in labor.

²¹ Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, you who dwell in the land of Uz; but to you also the cup will pass, you will become drunk and strip yourself bare. ²² O daughter of Sion, thine iniquity is done away. He will no more banish thee. He hath visited thine iniquities, daughter of Edom. He hath exposed thee for thy sins.

² Son of man, set your face against the mountains of Israel, and prophesy against them;

⁴⁶ Son of man, set thy face toward the south, and drop [words] against the south, and prophesy against the forest of the south field;

² “Son of man, set your face toward Jerusalem, and preach toward the sanctuaries, and prophesy against the land of Israel.

⁸ Thus says the Sovereign LORD: Because Moab and Seir say, Behold, the house of Judah is like all the nations;

¹² So says the Sovereign LORD: Because Edom has acted by taking vengeance against the house of Judah, and they are very guilty and are avenged on them, ¹³ therefore thus says the Sovereign LORD: "so I will stretch out my hand against Edom and I will cut off from it both human and animal, and I will make it a ruin from Teman and Dedan; they will fall by the sword. ¹⁴ 'I will lay my vengeance on Edom by the hand of my people Israel. Therefore, they will act in Edom according to my anger and according to my wrath. They will know my vengeance, declares the Sovereign LORD."'

²⁹ “There is Edom, her kings, and all her princes, who in their might are laid with those who are slain by the sword. They will lie with the uncircumcised, and with those who go down to the pit.

¹¹ This is what the LORD says: "For three transgressions of Edom and now for a fourth I will not turn away; because he pursued his brother with a sword, refusing to be compassionate. His anger was raging continuously; he kept up his unending wrath. ¹² "I will send a fire upon Teman, and it will devour the palaces of Bozrah."

¹ The vision of Obadiah. This is what the Sovereign LORD says about Edom. We have heard news from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, saying, Arise, and let's rise up against her in battle.

¹⁰ "Because of the violence done to your brother Jacob, shame will cover you and you will be cut off forever. ¹¹ On the day you stood nearby, on the day strangers took his wealth, and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots over Jerusalem, you were also like one of them. ¹² But do not look down on your brother in the day of his disaster, and do not rejoice over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction. Do not speak proudly in the day of distress. ¹³ Do not enter into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity. Do not look down on their affliction in the day of their calamity, neither seize their wealth on the day of their calamity. ¹⁴ nor stand in the crossway to cut off his escapees; nor shut up his survivors in the day of tribulation.

¹⁹ Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, divine utterance may be given me, so that I will boldly make known the mystery of the gospel,

¹² "Their houses will be turned over to others their fields and wives together when I stretch out my hand against those who live in the land," declares the LORD.

⁶ You have deserted me," declares the LORD. "You keep going backward. I'll reach out my hand and destroy you. I'm tired of showing compassion.

¹³ Behold, I am against you, O dweller of the valley, rock of the plain, says the LORD, those who say, Who can come down against us? Or, Who can enter our dwellings?

²⁵ "Look, I'm against you, destroying mountain, who destroys the whole earth," declares the LORD. "I'll stretch out my hand against you and roll you down from the crags. And I'll make you a burned-out mountain.

⁸ therefore the Sovereign LORD says: 'Behold, I, even I, am against you; and I will execute judgments among you in the sight of the nations.

¹⁵ So it will be a reproach and a taunt, an instruction and an astonishment, to the nations that are around you, when I execute judgments on you in anger and in wrath, and in wrathful rebukes—I, the LORD, have spoken it—

¹⁴ And I will stretch out my hand against them, and I will make the land a desolation and a wasteland from the desert to Riblah in all of their dwellings, and they will know that I am the LORD." '"

³ And say to the land of Israel, So says the LORD: Behold, I am against you and will draw out My sword from its sheath, and I will cut off from you the righteous and the wicked.

¹³ therefore thus says the Sovereign LORD: "so I will stretch out my hand against Edom and I will cut off from it both human and animal, and I will make it a ruin from Teman and Dedan; they will fall by the sword.

³ Speak and say, Thus said the Sovereign LORD: Behold me against thee Pharaoh, king of Egypt, the great sea-monster lying in the midst of his rivers, who said, The, river is to me, and I made me.

¹⁰ See, then, I am against you and against your streams, and I will make the land of Egypt an unpeopled waste, from Migdol to Syene, even as far as the edge of Ethiopia.

⁷ And I will make Mount Seir a cause for wonder and a waste, cutting off from it all comings and goings.

¹³ "I am against you," said the LORD Almighty! "I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword will devour your young lions. I will destroy your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers will be heard no more."

⁵ "Look, I am against you," says the LORD of hosts, "and I will lift your skirts over your face. I will show the nations your nakedness, and the kingdoms your shame.

¹⁴ For this time I will send all my plagues against your heart, against your officials, and against your people; that you may know that there is no one like me in all the earth.

⁴ And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and he will pursue you. And I will be honored through Pharaoh, and through all his armies. And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD. And they did so.

⁶ In all your dwelling places, the cities will be laid waste and the high places will be desolate; that your altars may be laid waste and made desolate, and your idols may be broken and cease, and your incense altars may be cut down, and your works may be abolished. ⁷ The slain will fall among you, and you will know that I am the LORD.

⁹ I will make you a perpetual desolation, and your cities will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the LORD.

¹² You will know that I, the LORD, have heard all your insults which you have spoken against the mountains of Israel, saying, 'They have been laid desolate. They have been given us to devour.'

¹⁹ Egypt will be desolate, and Edom will be a desert, because of violence against the people of Judah since they shed innocent blood in their land.

³ rejected Esau, turned his mountains into a wasteland, and gave his inheritance to desert jackals. ⁴ Even though Edom may claim, 'We were crushed, but we will return and rebuild the ruins,' this is what the LORD of the Heavenly Armies says: "They may rebuild, but I'll demolish. People will call them 'The Wicked Land,' and 'The People With Whom the LORD is Forever Angry.'

⁴¹ So Esau bore a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him. Esau said to himself: "The days of mourning for my father are near. Then I will kill my brother Jacob." ⁴² When Rebekah heard about Esau’s plans to kill Jacob, she called her younger son, Jacob. She said: »Your brother Esau is comforting himself by planning to kill you.

⁷ Remember, O LORD, against the sons of Edom, the day of Jerusalem; who said, Lay [it] bare, Lay [it] bare, down to its foundation!

²¹ Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and give them over to the power of the sword. Let their wives become childless and widows. Let their men be killed and their young men struck by the sword in battle.

²⁵ And as for you, profane one, wicked prince of Israel, whose day has come with the time of the punishment of the end,

²⁹ while they see for you false visions, while they divine lies to you, to lay you on the necks of the wicked who are deadly wounded, whose day has come in the time of the iniquity of the end.

¹² So says the Sovereign LORD: Because Edom has acted by taking vengeance against the house of Judah, and they are very guilty and are avenged on them,

¹⁵ So says the Sovereign LORD: Because the Philistines have acted in vengeance and have taken vengeance with spite in their soul, to destroy with perpetual enmity.

²⁴ Seventy weeks are decreed on your people and on your holy city, to put an end to the transgression, and to make an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy place.

¹⁵ For the day of the LORD is near all the nations. As you have done, it will be done to you. Your deeds will return upon your own head.

² For with the same judgment you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

⁵ Then I heard the angel in charge of the water say, "You are just. You are the one who is and who was, the Holy One, because you have judged these things. ⁶ for they shed the blood of your people and prophets, and you have given them blood to drink, as they deserve." ⁷ And I heard the altar saying, "Yes, O Lord God, the Almighty, true and just are your judgments."

⁶ Give back to her as she has done to others; pay her back double for what she has done; mix her a double portion in her own cup.

²⁴ In her was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of all who have been slain on the earth."

¹¹ No foot of man will go through it and no foot of beast, and it will be unpeopled for forty years.

²⁸ And I will make the land a desolation and a wasteland, and the pride of its strength will come to an end, and the mountains of Israel will be desolate with no one traveling through them." '

¹² »‘Alien tyrants of the nations have cut it down and left it. On the mountains and in all the valleys its branches have fallen and its boughs have been broken in all the ravines of the land. All the peoples of the earth have gone down from its shade and left it.

⁴ "'I will leave you on the land. I will cast you on the open field. I will cause all the birds of the heavens to dwell on you. And I will satisfy the beasts of the entire earth with you. ⁵ I will lay your flesh on the mountains, and fill the valleys with your height.

⁴ On the mountains of Israel you will fall, you and all of your troops, and the peoples who are with you, to birds of prey, birds of every wing, and animals of the field I will give you as food. ⁵ You will fall on the open field; for I have spoken it,” says the Sovereign LORD.

¹³ For I have sworn by Myself, declares the LORD, that Bozrah shall become a ruin, a reproach, a waste, and a curse. And all its cities shall be wastes forever.

⁴ '"I will not look on you with pity or spare you. I will repay you for your conduct and the detestable practices among you. THEN YOU WILL KNOW THAT I AM the LORD.'

⁹ '"I will not look on you with pity or spare you (my eye will not feel sorry for you). I will repay you in accordance with your conduct and the detestable practices among you. Then you will know that it is I, the LORD, who strikes the blow.

⁴ I will lay your cities waste, and you will be desolate. Then you will know that I am the LORD.

¹¹ "'I will increase the number of people and animals that live on you. They will grow and become many. I will let people live on you as in the past, and I will make you better off than ever before. Then you will know that I am the LORD.

⁹ "Therefore, as I live"—a declaration of the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel— "Moab shall be as Sodom, and the Ammonites like Gomorrah, a place of weeds and salt pits and a desolation forever. The remnant of my people shall plunder them, and the remainder of my nation shall possess them."

¹ Great is the LORD, and highly to be praised, in the city of our God, in his holy mountain 2 Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion, on the north sides, the city of the great King. ³ God is in her citadels; he is known as a high stronghold.

⁴ “Come,” they say, “let’s destroy them as a nation, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more.” ⁵ Indeed, they shrewdly planned together, forming an alliance against you ⁶ the tents of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarites; ⁷ Gebal and Ammon and Amalek, Philistia with the dwellers of Tyre;" ⁸ Even Assyria joined them to strengthen the descendants of Lot. [Interlude] ⁹ Do to them as you did to Midian, as you did to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the river Kishon ¹⁰ who perished at Endor, and became as the dung of the earth. ¹¹ Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, yes, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna, ¹² who said, "Let us take possession of God's pasturelands."

¹³ For the LORD has chosen Zion; he has desired it for his dwelling. ¹⁴ "This is my resting place forever. Here I will live, for I have desired it.

⁶ "Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you."

⁹ And his rock will pass away because of terror and his rulers will be dismayed at the ensign, says the LORD, whose fire is in Zion and his furnace in Jerusalem.

¹ To the people of Ammon: This is what the LORD says: "Does Israel have no sons? Does he have no heir? Why then has Milcom taken possession of Gad, and his people settled in its towns?

² Thus says the Sovereign LORD: Because the enemy has said against you, Aha! and, The ancient high places are ours in possession;

⁵ therefore thus says lord LORD: Surely in the fire of my jealousy I have spoken against the residue of the nations, and against all Edom, who have appointed my land to themselves for a possession with the joy of all their heart, wit

³⁵ A perimeter shall measure 18,000 units, and the name of the city from that time on shall be 'THE LORD IS THERE.'"

¹³ Do not enter into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity. Do not look down on their affliction in the day of their calamity, neither seize their wealth on the day of their calamity.

¹⁵ the LORD has turned off your judgments; He has turned away your enemy. the LORD, the King of Israel, is in your midst; you shall not fear evil any more.

⁵ And I will be for it a wall of fire all around,' declares the LORD, 'and I will be the glory in its midst.'"

¹⁶ the LORD is known [by] the judgment he hath executed: the wicked is ensnared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.

¹⁷ until I entered the sanctuaries of God. Then I understood their destiny. ¹⁸ Surely You set them in slippery places; You cast them down into ruin.

¹⁴ 'I will lay my vengeance on Edom by the hand of my people Israel. Therefore, they will act in Edom according to my anger and according to my wrath. They will know my vengeance, declares the Sovereign LORD."'

¹³ For judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

¹² who said, "Let us take possession of God's pasturelands."

⁹ He who implanted the ear, won't he hear? He who formed the eye, won't he see? ¹⁰ He who disciplines the nations, won't he punish? He who teaches man knows.

⁷ All those who found them have devoured them. And their foes have said, 'We are not guilty, because they have sinned against the LORD, the true pasture, even the LORD, the hope of their ancestors.'

¹² "I have heard the grumblings of the Israelites. Speak to them, saying, 'At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be full with bread, and you will know that I am the LORD your God.'"

²⁷ How long doth this wicked multitude murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel.

³ Don't continue to talk proudly, and don't speak arrogantly, for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

²⁸ Because your wrath against me and your words of pride have come up to my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my cord in your lips, and I will make you go back by the way you came.

¹⁵ And now, do not let Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you in this way, nor believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand, from the hand of my fathers; also, surely your god shall not deliver you from my hand.

¹⁹ And they spoke of the God of Jerusalem as of the gods of the peoples of the earth, the work of man`s hand.

³⁷ For he adds rebellion to his sin; he claps his hands among us, and multiplies his words against God.

¹⁶ therefore Job opens his mouth in empty talk— without knowledge he multiplies words."

⁸ They scoff and speak with malice; in arrogance, they threaten oppression. ⁹ They set their mouth against heaven; and their tongue passed on over the earth.

¹⁴ A fool moreover multiplies words. No man knows what has been, nor what will be. Who shall tell him what will come after him?

¹³ For he has said, “By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have understanding. I have removed the boundaries of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures. Like a valiant man I have brought down their rulers. ¹⁴ and my hand found, as a nest, the valuables of the people: and as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth; and no one flapped the wing or gaped the mouth or chirped. ¹⁵ Shall the axe boast itself against him who hews with it? Shall the saw magnify itself against him who wields it? As if a rod should wield those who lift it up, [or] as if a staff should lift up [him who is] not wood. ¹⁶ Therefore the Lord, the LORD of Armies, will send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory a burning will be kindled like the burning of fire. ¹⁷ The Light of Israel will become a fire and his Holy One a flame. It will burn and consume his thorns and his briers in a single day! ¹⁸ It will completely destroy the splendor of his forests and fertile fields, as when a sick man wastes away. ¹⁹ And the remaining trees of his forests will be so few that a child could write them down.

²⁰ Who among all the gods of these lands who delivered their land from my hand, that the LORD will deliver Jerusalem from my hand?

¹⁰ "Say to Hezekiah king of Judah: 'Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you. He says to you: "Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria."

²³ "Who is it you have insulted and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? It is against the Holy One of Israel!

²⁹ "For the reason that you rage against me and because your insolence (arrogance) has reached my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth. I will make you return by the way you came."

²³ because they did something stupid in Israel. They committed adultery with their neighbors' wives, and in my name they spoke lies that I didn't command them. I'm the one who knows, and I'm a witness," declares the LORD.'"

³⁶ "'The king will do as he pleases. He'll exalt and magnify himself above every god, speaking amazing things against the God of Gods. He'll succeed until the indignation is completed, because what has been determined must be carried out.

¹³ "You have spoken arrogant words against me," says the LORD. "Yet you ask, 'What did we say against you?'

¹⁸ With lofty but empty words, they appeal to the sensual passions of the flesh and entice the ones who are just escaping from those who live in error.

¹⁵ to execute judgment on all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their ungodly deeds which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against him."

⁵ It was allowed to utter great boasts and blasphemies, and to exert authority for forty-two months. ⁶ He opened his mouth to blaspheme God, to slander his name, and his dwelling place, and those who live in heaven.

⁷ All the earth is at rest and is quiet; they break out into singing. ⁸ the trees of Lebanon also rejoice against you, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, From the time that you have been laid low, no one has come up to cut us down.

¹³ Therefore this is what the Sovereign Sovereign LORD says: My servants will eat, but you will go hungry. My servants will drink, but you will go thirsty. My servants will rejoice, but you will be put to shame! ¹⁴ My servants will sing out of the joy of their hearts, but you will cry out from anguish of heart and wail in brokenness of spirit. ¹⁵ You will leave your name to my chosen ones as a curse. The Sovereign Sovereign LORD will put you to death, but to his servants he will give another name.

⁴⁸ Then the heaven and the earth and all that is in them will shout for joy over Babylon, for from the north the destroyers will come to it," declares the LORD.

⁵ Whoever mocks the poor shows contempt for their maker, and whoever is happy about disaster will not go unpunished.

⁵ For my sword saturates in the heavens: behold, it descends on Edom and on the people of my devotement to judgment. ⁶ The sword of the LORD is filled with blood; it is made fat with fatness, with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams; for the LORD has a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Edom.

¹¹ Because you rejoice, because you exult, O destroyers of My inheritance, because you are fat like the heifer in grass, and neigh like strong ones,

²¹ Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, you who dwell in the land of Uz; but to you also the cup will pass, you will become drunk and strip yourself bare.

³ And say to it, So says the Sovereign LORD: Behold, I am against you, Mount Seir, and I will stretch My hand against you, and I will make you a ruin and a waste. ⁴ I will lay your cities waste, and you will be desolate. Then you will know that I am the LORD.

² Thus says the Sovereign LORD: Because the enemy has said against you, Aha! and, The ancient high places are ours in possession; ³ therefore prophesy and say, Thus says the Sovereign LORD. Because, even because they have made you desolate and swallowed you up on every side, so that you became the possession of the rest of the nations, and you became the talk and evil gossip of the nations; ⁴ '"'Therefore, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Sovereign LORD. The Sovereign LORD says to the mountains and to the hills, to the ravines and to the valleys, to the desolate wastes and to the forsaken cities that have become a prey and derision to the rest of the nations that are round about, ⁵ therefore thus says lord LORD: Surely in the fire of my jealousy I have spoken against the residue of the nations, and against all Edom, who have appointed my land to themselves for a possession with the joy of all their heart, wit

⁶ I will send a fire on Magog, and on those who dwell securely in the islands; and they shall know that I am the LORD. ⁷ And I will make clear my holy name among my people Israel; I will no longer let my holy name be made unclean: and the nations will be certain that I am the Lord, the Holy One in Israel.

¹² But do not look down on your brother in the day of his disaster, and do not rejoice over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction. Do not speak proudly in the day of distress.

⁸ And a great number, hearing of all that he was doing, came to him from Judea, from Jerusalem, from Edom, from beyond the Jordan, and from the country round Tyre and Sidon.
