⁴ Thou shalt not make for thyself an idol, nor the likeness of any thing, which is in the heaven above, or in the earth below, or in the waters under the earth;

¹ When the people saw that Moses took a long time to come down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and told him, "Come here and make us a god who will go before us, because, as for this fellow Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt, we don't know what has become of him."

⁸ They have turned aside quickly from the way that I commanded them; they have made for themselves a cast-image bull calf, and they bowed to it, and they sacrificed to it, and they said, 'These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.'"

²³ For they said to me, Make us gods which shall go before us; as for this man Moses, who brought us out of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.

¹⁷ Work no molten elohim.

⁴ "'Do not turn to idols, nor make molten gods for yourselves. I am the LORD your God.

¹ "'Do not make idols or set up statues, stone pillars, or carved stones to worship. I am the LORD your God!

¹⁵ Be very careful, for you saw no kind of form on the day that the LORD spoke to you in Horeb out of the middle of the fire, ¹⁶ that you not deal corruptly, and make for yourselves a graven image, a likeness of any figure, the form of a male or female, ¹⁷ any animal on earth, any winged bird that flies in the sky, ¹⁸ any creeping thing on the ground, or any fish in the sea. ¹⁹ and lest having looked up to the sky, and having seen the sun and the moon and the stars, and all the heavenly bodies, you should go astray and worship them, and serve them, which the Lord your God has distributed to all the nations under heaven.

²³ Be careful, lest you forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make yourselves a carved image in the form of anything which the LORD your God has forbidden you. ²⁴ For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. ²⁵ "When you have had children and grandchildren and you have grown old in the land and you act corruptly and you make a divine image of the form of anything and you do evil in the eyes of the LORD your God, thus provoking him to anger,

⁸ "'Do not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above, or on the earth below, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:

¹⁵ Cursed is the man who makes any image of wood or stone or metal, disgusting to the Lord, the work of man's hands, and puts it up in secret. And let all the people say, So be it.

²⁸ And the king took counsel, and went, and made two golden heifers, and said to the people, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold, here are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.

⁷ He set the engraved image of the idol, which he had made, in God's house, of which God said to David and to Solomon his son, “In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put my name forever.

⁷ Let all who serve an image be ashamed, those who boast about idols. Worship him, all you gods.

⁴ Their idols, are silver and gold, the works of the hands of men,— ⁵ They have mouths, but cannot speak; they have eyes, but cannot see. ⁶ they have ears, but they cannot hear; they have noses, but they cannot smell; ⁷ They have hands but they cannot feel: They have feet, but they cannot walk: nor can they utter a sound with their throat. ⁸ Those who make them will be like them; yes, everyone who trusts in them.

¹⁵ The idols of the nations are silver and gold, Work of the hands of man. ¹⁶ They have a mouth, but cannot speak: eyes they have, but they cannot see; ¹⁷ they have ears, but they do not hear, nor is there breath in their mouths. ¹⁸ Those who make them will be like them, yes, everyone who trusts in them.

¹⁸ To whom, then, will you compare God? What image will you compare him to? ¹⁹ As for an idol, a craftsman casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and fashions silver chains for it. ²⁰ A man too poor to present such an offering selects wood that will not rot. He looks for a skilled craftsman to set up an idol that will not topple.

⁸ I am the LORD; that is my name, and I do not give my glory to another, nor my praise to the idols.

¹⁷ Those who trust in idols and call images their gods will be humiliated and disgraced.

⁹ All who make idols are nothing. The things they treasure are worthless. Those who would speak up for them are blind. They are shamefully ignorant. ¹⁰ Who shapes a god and casts a useless and good for nothing idol. ¹¹ He and his kind will be put to shame. Craftsmen are merely men. Let them all come together and take their stand for they will be brought down to terror and infamy. ¹² The blacksmith takes a tool and works with it in the coals. He shapes an idol with hammers; he forges it with the might of his arm. He gets hungry and loses his strength. He drinks no water and grows faint. ¹³ The carpenter measures with a line and makes an outline with a red chalk marker. He roughs it out with chisels and marks it with a compass. He shapes it in the form of man in all his glory, that it may dwell in a shrine. ¹⁴ He cut down cedars, or cypress or oak. He let it grow among the trees of the forest, or planted a pine, and the rain made it grow. ¹⁵ It is man's fuel for burning so he takes some to warm himself. He kindles a fire and bakes bread. But he also fashions a god and worships it. Yes he makes an idol and bows down to it. ¹⁶ He burns part of it in the fire. With part of it, he eats meat. He roasts a roast, and is satisfied. Yes, he warms himself and says, Ah! I am warm, I have seen the fire. ¹⁷ And the rest of it he makes into a god, his graven image; he falls down to it and worships, and prays to it, and says, Deliver me! for you are my god. ¹⁸ They know not, they understand not; for their eyes are daubed over, that they cannot see; their hearts, that they cannot understand. ¹⁹ No one stops to think. No one has enough knowledge or understanding to say: "I burned half of the wood in the fire. I also baked bread over its coals. I roasted meat and ate it. Now I am making the rest of the wood into a disgusting thing and bowing to a block of wood." ²⁰ He feeds on ashes; a deceived mind misleads him. And he cannot save himself, and he cannot say, "Is this not an illusion in my right hand?"

¹⁶ The makers of idols will be put to shame and disgraced. They will go off into disgrace together.

⁵ "To whom will you compare me or count me equal? To whom will you liken me that we may be compared? ⁶ "Some pour out gold from their bags and weigh out silver on the scales. They hire a goldsmith to make it into a god. They bow down and worship it. ⁷ "They lift it to their shoulders and carry it. They set it up in its place and there it stands. From that spot it cannot move. Though one cries out to it, it does not answer. It cannot save him from his troubles! ⁸ "Remember this! Keep it in mind and take it to heart, you rebels.

³ For the customs of the peoples are vanity; for one cuts a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman with the ax. ⁴ They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails, that it not move. ⁵ "They are like scarecrows in cucumber fields. They cannot speak. They must be carried, for they cannot walk! Do not fear them! For they can do no harm and they can do no good."

⁸ But they are one and all senseless and foolish; the teaching of vanities is a stock. ⁹ Beaten silver is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz. It is the work of a craftsman and of the hands of a goldsmith. Violet and purple are their clothing. They are all the work of skilled men.

¹⁴ Everyone is stupid and without knowledge. Every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols, for his images are false. There is no life in them. ¹⁵ They're worthless, a work of mockery, and when the time of punishment comes, they'll perish. ¹⁶ The Portion of Jacob is not like them; for He is the Maker of all things; and Israel is the rod of His inheritance. the LORD Almighty is His name.

¹⁰ So I went in and looked, and saw every form of creeping things, abominable animals, and all the idols of the house of Israel, portrayed around on the wall.

²⁹ "Being then the offspring of God, we should not think that the divine being is like gold, or silver, or stone, a device made by man's design or skill.

²⁶ And as you see and hear, not only in Ephesus, but in nearly the whole province of Asia, Paul has persuaded a great number of people to turn away. He says that man-made gods are no gods at all. ²⁷ There is danger not only that our business will fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited and her majesty deposed—she who is worshiped by all the province of Asia and the whole world.” ²⁸ When they heard this, they became furious and began to shout, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!" ²⁹ And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theater. ³⁰ Paul wanted to go in among the crowd, but the disciples would not let him. ³¹ Some of the officials and his friends sent him a message begging him not to enter the theatre. ³² The assembly was in confusion: some were shouting one thing and some another; most of them did not know why they had come together. ³³ Then the Jews pushed Alexander forward, out from the crowd. So Alexander motioned with his hand and would have made a defense to the people. ³⁴ But when they realized he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” ³⁵ Finally the city clerk quieted the crowd and declared, “Men of Ephesus, doesn’t everyone know that the city of Ephesus is guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven?

²³ and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

²⁰ The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the works of their hands. They did not stop worshiping demons and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk.

¹⁴ Because of the signs it was given to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived those who dwell on the earth, telling them to make an image to the beast that had been wounded by the sword and yet had lived. ¹⁵ The second beast was permitted to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image would also speak and cause all who refused to worship it to be killed.

⁹ The third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice: "If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, ¹⁰ will drink the wine of God's wrath, which has been poured undiluted into the cup of his anger. He will be tortured with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and the lamb. ¹¹ The smoke from their torture goes up forever and ever. There is no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image or for anyone who receives the mark of its name."

² So the first angel went and poured out his bowl on the earth, and foul and loathsome sores broke out on the people who had the mark of the beast and worshipped his image.
