⁴ "You shall not say to yourself when the LORD your God is driving them out before you, saying, 'Because of my righteousness the LORD brought me to take possession of this land'; but because of the wickedness of these nations the LORD is driving them out before you.

¹⁶ And the fourth generation they shall turn back hither: for the crime of the Amorite has not been completed till now.

²⁴ "'Do not defile yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations which I am casting out before you were defiled. ²⁵ The land was defiled. Therefore I punished its iniquity, and the land vomited out her inhabitants. ²⁶ "'Live by my standards, and obey my rules. Neither you nor any foreigner should ever do any of these disgusting things. ²⁷ (for all these abominations have the men of the land done, that were before you, and the land became defiled); ²⁸ »‘If you make the land unclean, it will vomit you out as it has vomited out the people who were there before you. ²⁹ »‘Whoever does any of these disgusting things must be excluded from the people. ³⁰ Therefore you shall keep my requirements, that you do not practice any of these abominable customs, which were practiced before you, and that you do not defile yourselves with them: I am the LORD your God.'"

⁷ The LORD did not set his love on you, nor choose you, because you were more in number than any people; for you were the fewest of all peoples: ⁸ But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn to your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of bond-men, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

¹⁷ Say not then, in your hearts, My power and the strength of my hands have got me this wealth.

⁵ It is not because of your righteousness and because of the uprightness of your heart that you are coming to take possession of their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations the LORD your God is driving them before you, and in order to confirm the promise that the LORD swore to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

³¹ You shall not do so to your God; for they have sacrificed to their gods the abominations of the Lord which He hates, for they burn their sons and their daughters in fire to their gods.

⁹ "When you enter the land that the LORD your God is about to give you, don't learn the detestable practices of those nations there. ¹⁰ There must never be found among you anyone who sacrifices his son or daughter in fire, practices divination, interprets omens, practices sorcery, ¹¹ Or casts spells, or is a medium, or a wizard, or consults the dead. ¹² For everyone doing these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable things the LORD your God is driving them out from before you. ¹³ You must be blameless before the LORD your God. ¹⁴ For these nations that you shall dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery and to diviners; but as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you to do so.

²² Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord, I deal thus with you, not for your sakes, house of Israel, but only for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations wherever you went.

³² "'I want you to know that I am not doing this for your sake,' proclaims the Sovereign LORD. 'Be ashamed and disgraced because of your ways, people of Israel.'

⁶ And if it is by grace, then it is no longer by works. Otherwise, grace would no longer be grace.

²⁰ That is correct: They were broken off because of unbelief, but you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid.

⁴ My conscience is clear, but that does not vindicate me. It is the Lord who judges me.

⁷ For who makes you so superior? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?

⁴ But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, ⁵ made us alive with Christ, even when we were dead in our trespasses. It is by grace you have been saved!

⁹ who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given us in Christ Jesus before the eternal times.

³ For at one time we too were foolish, disobedient, misled, enslaved to all sorts of desires and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. ⁴ But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, ⁵ he saved us, not by deeds of righteousness that we have done, but because of his mercy, through the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit,
