² So the king called the Gibeonites and spoke to them. Now the Gibeonites were not from the Israelites; they were from the remainder of the Amorites. Now the Israelites had sworn to them, but Saul tried to wipe them out in his zeal for the Israelites and Judah.

¹⁶ And the fourth generation they shall turn back hither: for the crime of the Amorite has not been completed till now.

¹⁶ »Destroy all the peoples whom the LORD your God gives you. Do not look at them with pity. Do not serve their gods. For that would be a snare to you.

³ But when the Inhabiters of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho, and Ai, ⁴ And they acted slyly, and they went and acted like envoys, and took old sacks for their asses, and old wineskins, even torn and bound up; ⁵ and old and patched sandals on their feet, and wore old garments. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy. ⁶ They went to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel: "We come from a distant country, make a treaty with us." ⁷ The men of Israel said to the Hivites: "Perhaps you live near us. How can we make a treaty with you?" ⁸ They said: "We are your servants." Joshua said to them: "Who are you? Where do you come from?" ⁹ They said to him, "Your servants have come from a very far country because of the name of the LORD your God; for we have heard of his fame, all that he did in Egypt, ¹⁰ and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites beyond Jordan, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan which dwelt at Ashtaroth. ¹¹ And our elders and all those who live in our country spoke to us saying, Take provisions with you for the journey, and go to meet them. Say to them, We are your servants. And now make a treaty with us. ¹² These loaves we took hot for our journey, on the day we set out to come to you; but now they are dry, and become mouldy; ¹³ And these wineskins were new when we filled them, but look now they're cracked. And our clothes and sandals are worn out from our very long journey." ¹⁴ The men sampled their provisions but did not ask for counsel from the LORD. ¹⁵ Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live. the leaders of the congregation ratified it by an oath. ¹⁶ But three days after they had made the treaty with them, they learned that they were their neighbors and were living in their midst. ¹⁷ And the Israelites set out and went to their cities on the third day (their cities were Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath Jearim). ¹⁸ But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn to them by the LORD the God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against their leaders. ¹⁹ But all the leaders of the congregation said, "We have sworn to them by the LORD the God of Israel, and so we cannot touch them. ²⁰ This we will do to them: we will let them live so that wrath will not be on us because of the oath we swore to them." ²¹ They shall live, and shall be woodcutters and water carriers to all the congregation, as the princes said to them.

⁴⁴ Saul said, God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if you do not die, Jonathan.

⁸ He took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people. ⁹ But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and the cattle, and the fat ones and the lambs, and all that was good, and wouldnʼt utterly destroy them; but everything that was despised and rejected, that they utterly destroyed.

¹⁶ He said, "Come with me, and see my zeal for the LORD." So he made him ride in his chariot.

³¹ But Jehu was not careful to walk in the law of the LORD God of Israel with all his heart; he did not turn from the sins of Jeroboam by which he caused Israel to sin.

⁵⁴ When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do You want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?” ⁵⁵ But Jesus turned and rebuked them,

² They will put you out of the synagogues. In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.

² For I testify about them that they are zealous for God, but not on the basis of knowledge.

¹⁷ Those people are zealous for you, but not in a good way. Instead, they want to isolate you from us, so that you will be zealous for them.
