⁷ So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath Pileser king of Assyria, saying, "I am your servant and your son. Come up, and save me out of the hand of the king of Syria, and out of the hand of the king of Israel, who rise up against me."

⁴ The king of Israel answered, "It is according to your saying, my lord, O king. I am yours, and all that I have."

³² So they put sackcloth on their bodies and ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, "Your servant Ben Hadad says, 'Please let me live.'" He said, "Is he still alive? He is my brother." ³³ Now the men took it as a sign, and were quick to pick up on his word. They said: "Benhadad is your brother." Then he said: "Go and get him." So Ben-hadad came out to him and he made him get up into his carriage.

²⁹ In the days of Pekah king of Israel, Tiglath Pileser king of Assyria came and took Ijon, Abel Beth Maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, and Galilee, all the land of Naphtali; and he carried them captive to Assyria.

²⁶ So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul king of Assyria (that is, Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria), who took the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh into exile. He took them to Halah, Habor, Hara and the river of Gozan, where they are to this day.

¹⁶ At that time King Ahaz sent to the king of Assyria to help him,

²⁰ Tilgath Pilneser king of Assyria came to him, and gave him trouble, but didn't strengthen him.

³ Don’t put your trust in princes, in a son of man in whom there is no help. ⁴ When they stop breathing, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans evaporate! ⁵ Blessed is he whose helper is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God:

⁵ This is what the LORD says: "Cursed is the person who trusts in mankind, who makes flesh his strength, and whose heart turns away from the LORD.

¹⁷ Our eyes still fail, looking in vain for our help. In our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save.

³ Assyria shall not save us; we will not ride on horses. We shall not say any more to the work of our hands, Our gods! For in You the fatherless finds mercy.
