¹ Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehemjudah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons. ² And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehemjudah. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept. ¹⁰ And they said unto her, Surely we will return with you unto your people. ¹¹ And Naomi said, Return, my daughters: why will all of you go with me? are there yet any more sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands? ¹² Return, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons; ¹³ Would all of you tarry for them till they were grown? would all of you stay for them from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieves me much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone out against me. ¹⁴ And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her. ¹⁵ And she said, Behold, your sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return you after your sister in law. ¹⁶ And Ruth said, Implore me not to leave you, or to return from following after you: for where you go, I will go; and where you lodge, I will lodge: your people shall be my people, and your God my God: ¹⁷ Where you die, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part you and me. ¹⁸ When she saw that she was steadfastly minded to go with her, then she left speaking unto her. ¹⁹ So they two went until they came to Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said, Is this Naomi? ²⁰ And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. ²¹ I went out full and the LORD has brought me home again empty: why then call all of you me Naomi, seeing the LORD has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me? ²² So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.

¹⁰ And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land.

¹ And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be you perfect.

⁵⁵ And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them: and Laban departed, and returned unto his place.

¹⁹ And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.

¹¹ Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at your father's house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest possibly he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.

¹⁴ And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin. If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.

¹⁵ Moreover he kissed all his brethren, and wept upon them: and after that his brethren talked with him.

¹⁵ And he blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day,

³¹ And the people believed: and when they heard that the LORD had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped.

³ And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.

³¹ And the flax and the barley was smitten: for the barley was in the ear, and the flax was in bud. ³² But the wheat and the spelt were not smitten: for they were not grown up.

⁴ Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no. ⁵ And it shall come to pass, that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in; and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily. ⁶ And Moses and Aaron said unto all the children of Israel, At even, then all of you shall know that the LORD has brought you out from the land of Egypt:

²⁷ And Moses let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own land.

¹⁹ And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass:

¹⁵ For indeed the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from among the host, until they were consumed.

⁸ And after him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.

¹¹ And Boaz answered and said unto her, It has fully been showed me, all that you have done unto your mother in law since the death of your husband: and how you have left your father and your mother, and the land of your nativity, and are come unto a people which you knew not in time past. ¹² The LORD recompense your work, and a full reward be given you of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings you are come to trust.

²⁰ And Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he of the LORD, who has not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead. And Naomi said unto her, The man is near of kin unto us, one of our next kinsmen.

²³ So she kept fast by the maidens of Boaz to glean unto the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest; and dwelt with her mother in law.

¹ Then Naomi her mother in law said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for you, that it may be well with you?

¹ Now there was a certain man of Ramathaimzophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite:

⁷ The LORD makes poor, and makes rich: he brings low, and lifts up. ⁸ He raises up the poor out of the dust, and lifts up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and he has set the world upon them.

¹ Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Your servant my husband is dead; and you know that your servant did fear the LORD: and the creditor has come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen.

³¹ Then he said, God do so and more also to me, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day.

¹ Then spoke Elisha unto the woman, whose son he had restored to life, saying, Arise, and go you and your household, and sojourn where ever you can sojourn: for the LORD has called for a famine; and it shall also come upon the land seven years. ² And the woman arose, and did after the saying of the man of God: and she went with her household, and sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years. ³ And it came to pass at the seven years' end, that the woman returned out of the land of the Philistines: and she went forth to cry unto the king for her house and for her land.

²¹ And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

¹⁷ Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects: therefore despise not you the chastening of the Almighty:

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinks up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

¹⁷ You renew your witnesses against me, and increase your indignation upon me; changes and war are against me.

⁷ Can you by searching find out God? can you find out the Almighty unto perfection?

²⁶ For you write bitter things against me, and make me to possess the iniquities of my youth.

⁸ And you have filled me with wrinkles, which is a witness against me: and my leanness rising up in me bears witness to my face.

⁶ Know now that God has overthrown me, and has compassed me with his net.

²¹ Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O all of you my friends; for the hand of God has touched me.

³ But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.

⁴ For day and night your hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.

¹⁹ Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivers him out of them all.

³ The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he has left off to be wise, and to do good.

² For your arrows stick fast in me, and your hand presses me sore.

⁹ I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because you did it. ¹⁰ Remove your stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of your hand.

¹⁰ Hearken, O daughter, and consider, and incline your ear; forget also your own people, and your father's house;

¹⁴ For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer your terrors I am distracted.

³⁰ If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments; ³¹ If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; ³² Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.

¹⁴ He causes the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth; ¹⁵ And wine that makes glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengthens man's heart.

¹⁶ Moreover he called for a famine upon the land: he brake the whole staff of bread.

³⁴ A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.

⁵ He has given food unto them that fear him: he will ever be mindful of his covenant.

⁶³ I am a companion of all them that fear you, and of them that keep your precepts.

⁵ As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the LORD shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity: but peace shall be upon Israel.

¹⁵ I will abundantly bless her provision: I will satisfy her poor with bread.

¹⁵ The eyes of all wait upon you; and you give them their food in due season.

⁷ Which executes judgment for the oppressed: which gives food to the hungry. The LORD looses the prisoners:

¹⁴ He makes peace in your borders, and fills you with the finest of the wheat.

¹⁷ A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

²⁴ A man that has friends must show himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother.

⁸ Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:

¹ For the LORD will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land: and the strangers shall be joined with them, and they shall cleave to the house of Jacob.

⁷ Is this your joyous city, whose antiquity is of ancient days? her own feet shall carry her far off to sojourn.

¹³ I reckoned till morning, that, as a lion, so will he break all my bones: from day even to night will you make an end of me.

²¹ Then shall you say in your heart, Who has begotten me these, seeing I have lost my children, and am desolate, a captive, and removing back and forth? and who has brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where had they been?

¹⁰ For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and returns not thither, but waters the earth, and makes it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:

¹⁹ your own wickedness shall correct you, and your backslidings shall reprove you: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that you have forsaken the LORD your God, and that my fear is not in you, says the Lord GOD of hosts.

¹⁰ For thus says the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.

¹³ Son of man, when the land sins against me by trespassing grievously, then will I stretch out mine hand upon it, and will break the staff of the bread thereof, and will send famine upon it, and will cut off man and beast from it:

²¹ For thus says the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four sore judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the dangerous beast, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast?

⁴⁷ The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Truthfully it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing you could reveal this secret.
