⁶ What is this coming up from the wilderness; like a column of smoke, fuming with myrrh and incense made of all the perfumer's powders?

¹³ Thy productions are a paradise of pomegranates with delicious fruits; aromatic plants with the varieties of balsams; ¹⁴ spikenard and saffron, sweet cane and cinnamon; with all kinds of trees of incense; myrrh, aloes with all the principal spices.

² . I SLEEP; but my heart is awake. The voice of my dear brother! he knocketh at the door! "Open to me, my sister, my dove, my consecrated one! for my head is filled with dew, and my locks with the drops of the night."

¹³ His cheeks are like beds of spices emitting perfumes; his lips are lillies distilling myrrh plenteously.

³⁶ and be like men who are waiting their master's return from a wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may instantly open for him.

⁷ not barely however by his coming, but by the consolation with which he was comforted on your account, when he informed us of your longing desire, your bitter sorrow, your zeal for me; so that I was the more rejoiced;

⁹ Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that you were affected with a sorrow which led to a reformation. For you were affected with a godly sorrow, that you might in no wise receive damage from us. ¹⁰ For godly sorrow operateth to produce a reformation for salvation, never to be repented of; but the sorrow of this world worketh death. ¹¹ For behold! this very thing; your being affected with a godly sorrow, what solicitude it hath wrought in you! nay, what apologies! what indignation! what fear! what longing desire! what zeal! what avengement! By your whole conduct you have shewn yourselves to be clear in this matter.

¹⁷ that, by means of this belief, the Christ may dwell in your hearts; that you being rooted and grounded in love,

²⁰ Behold I stand at the door and knock. If any one will hearken to my voice and open the door, I will come in to him, and sup with him, and he with me.
