¹ What then shall we say that our father Abraham obtained in regard to the flesh?

² Look to Abraham your father, and to Sarah who brought you forth. For he was an individual when I called him; and I blessed him and loved him and multiplied him.

⁹ and presume not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father! For I say to you, God is able out of these stones to raise up children for Abraham.

⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of this reformation: and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say to you, that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

²⁴ Whereupon he cried and said, Father, Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. ²⁵ And Abraham said, Son, remember that thou receivedst thy good things in thy life time; and Lazarus in like manner, his evil things. But now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

²⁹ To this Abraham replied, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hearken to them. ³⁰ Whereupon he said, Nay, father Abraham, but if one go to them from the dead, they will reform. ³¹ And Abraham said to him, If they will not hearken to Moses, and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one should rise from the dead.

³³ Some answered him, We are the seed of Abraham, and have never been in bondage to any one: how then dost thou say, Ye shall be made free.

³⁷ I know that you are Abraham's seed; but you seek to kill me, because my word continueth not in you. ³⁸ What I have seen with my Father, I speak; and what you have seen with your father you do. ³⁹ They answered and said to him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith to them, If ye were the children of Abraham, you would do the works of Abraham. ⁴⁰ But now you seek to kill me, a man who told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. ⁴¹ You do the works of your father. Hereupon they said to him, We were not born of fornication; we have one father, namely, God.

⁵³ Art thou greater than our father Abraham who died? The prophets also died. Whom dost thou make thyself?

⁵⁶ Your father Abraham was transported with a desire to see this day of mine, and he saw it, and was made glad.

²⁶ Men, brethren, children of the race of Abraham, and those among you, who fear God, to you the word of this salvation is sent.

¹⁶ Therefore the promise is because of faith, that it may be matter of favour to this extent, that it may be firm to the whole seed"not only to that under the law, but to that of the faith of Abraham,

¹ What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that favour may abound?

⁷ What shall we say then? Is the law sin? No, by no means. Indeed I should not have known sin, had it not been for the law. For I should not have known covetousness, had not the law said, "Thou shall not covet"

³¹ What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

²² Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they of the seed of Abraham? So am I.

⁹ Well then: we have had fathers of our flesh who have corrected us, and we have reverenced them; shall we not much more submit ourselves to the father of our spirits, and live?
