⁷ though the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who had lived long with Joshua, and who knew all the great works which the Lord had done for Israel;

You cannot prosper. Because you have forsaken the Lord, therefore he will forsake you. ²¹ Upon this they fell upon him and stoned him by the command of the king, in the court of the house of the Lord. ²² Thus Joas remembered not the kindness which Jodae his father had done him, but put to death his son, and when he was dying he said, May the Lord see and judge.

¹² Therefore, as you, my beloved, have always been obedient, not only when I was present, but now much more when I am absent, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;
